It's not a secret for anyone that the most "greedy" component of a smartphone, the most actively consuming energy battery, this is an LCD display. The "appetite" of the screen is so great (30-50% of the power consumption of the entire device, and sometimes even more) that other consumers look modest against its background. And few people think about the component that occupies the second place in this list. But Samsung engineers, apparently, seriously thought about this issue, and today we will tell you about what came of it.

Equipment

It is worth noting that sales of the Galaxy S Wi-Fi 4.0 have not yet begun, and we were provided with a pre-production copy for testing. It does not have any significant differences from the final version in terms of configuration and even more design, but the equipment of the devices that go on sale may be slightly changed.

We received the test device in a neat black box with a hinged lid. But, of course, on the shelves of Galaxy S stores, Wi-Fi 4.0 will not be in such a gloomy laconic package. Since the box lid does not have any locks and opens freely, an outer packaging is clearly assumed. In the box, we found:

  • MID Galaxy S Wi-Fi 4.0
  • White stereo headset with microphone
  • MicroUSB data cable
  • Charger

"Gentleman's set" - nothing superfluous, but everything you need is there. According to information from the manufacturer's website, the kit will also include a user manual.

In a nutshell specifications Galaxy S Wi-Fi 4.0 could be described as “a Galaxy S smartphone without a GSM / GPRS module”. It is possible, but it would be a mistake, and rather gross. Despite the significant similarity in configuration, it is still different devices that have a lot of differences.

However, the core of the system - the processor and RAM - is the same for these models: 1-GHz Cortex A8 and 512 MB, respectively. The built-in ROM is 8 GB and can be expanded with microSD memory cards up to 32 GB. However, while the smartphone debuted with Android 2.1, the Galaxy S Wi-Fi 4.0 comes with version 2.2, and the company has announced an update to Android 2.3 is coming soon.

The 4-inch LCD is built with Super Clear LCD technology. Its resolution has also not changed compared to its predecessor and is 480x800 pixels. The screen is multi-touch, capacitive. Subjectively, the screen provides a slightly lower maximum brightness than Super AMOLED, but the image is still very juicy and contrasting. It's great for both photo and video viewing.

One of the most important Galaxy differences S Wi-Fi 4.0 from the smartphone of the same name - acoustic system... The device is equipped with 1.3-watt stereo speakers located on different sides of the case. It would be an exaggeration to say that they provide a bright stereo effect or, moreover, surround sound. But the volume on the Galaxy S Wi-Fi 4.0 is surprisingly high for a portable device.

The device is equipped with two video cameras - 3.2-megapixel rear and front with VGA resolution. The flash is not provided, but the autofocus works great. Despite the low resolution, front-camera provides a pretty good image, and the rear shoots well even indoors.

Separately, it should be noted that the Galaxy S Wi-Fi 4.0 is a versatile multimedia mini-tablet capable of, as they say, "out of the box" playing most common audio and video formats, even HD-video in mkv. An impressive list of formats that the developers have implemented are given above. And although the MID has many use cases, Wi-Fi 4.0 pleased the Galaxy S most of all as a multimedia device: just drop a couple of files on it before going to work - and you won't be bored on the road. Of course, any modern smartphones offer the same opportunities, but, let's be frank, few people dare to start the day by watching a video on them - the chance is too great to be left by the end of the day without a battery charge and, accordingly, with a non-working phone.

Speaking of battery, the Galaxy S Wi-Fi 4.0 is equipped with a 1200 mAh (4.44 W) lithium battery as standard. Have Galaxy smartphone S battery capacity is 20% more, but, as the results of our tests show, even 1200 mAh Galaxy battery S Wi-Fi 4.0 is more than enough.

Design and ergonomics

Buyers who prefer Samsung smartphones are advised to be as careful as possible - it’s not even an hour, being flattered by an attractive price and not reading the name thoughtfully enough, only at home they will find that Galaxy S Wi-Fi 4.0 is not a smartphone at all. Because at first glance, distinguishing MID Galaxy S Wi-Fi 4.0 from the popular Galaxy S communicator will be difficult even for owners of the latter. The design, weight and dimensions of the device and the location of the controls of these two gadgets are almost completely identical.

However, there were no differences at all - the back cover of the MID is made of white plastic and has a second speaker grill (the smartphone is equipped with only one speaker). And the most attentive will notice a different arrangement of the light sensors on the front panel, although such a trifle is difficult to notice even with a careful study of the device, not like in the hustle and bustle of the store.

One way or another, the absence of changes in this case is a blessing, because the design of the original Galaxy S turned out to be extremely successful and comfortable.

Most of the front panel is occupied by a 4-inch Super Clear LCD display. There are two touch buttons(and), between them is a hardware button.

On the top edge of the case there is a 3.5 mm jack for headphones or a headset and a microUSB connector hidden behind a protective shutter. On the bottom there is a barely noticeable microphone hole and a groove that makes it easy to dismantle the back cover.

On the right is just the power button, on the left is the volume control and a hole for the wrist strap. By the way, the fastening structure of this lace is worth a special mention. Usually there are two such holes in the case, the user must pass a loop at the end of the lace through them and then pass the other end through it.

In Galaxy S Wi-Fi 4.0, the design is simpler and sleeker - a special groove with a plastic pin is hidden under the back cover, the user just needs to thread a loop through the hole and put it on this pin.

The rear panel of the device, which also functions as a cover, houses the lens peephole and stereo speakers. You may need to remove the cover of the device only in three cases - to install the lanyard, microSD card or replace the battery.

Menus and Applications

As mentioned above, the Galaxy S Wi-Fi 4.0 mini-tablet is based on the Android 2.2 (Froyo) operating system. However, the OS interface differs from the standard one, since the Galaxy S Wi-Fi 4.0 uses the proprietary TouchWiz shell.

At first glance, there are not so many programs in the standard package: the usual package Android applications supplemented by Skype and Qik communicators, as well as ThinkFree Office program for working with MS Office files.

The latter copes well with displaying complex files and even allows you to edit them. And although this is not very convenient on a device with a touch interface and a relatively small screen, the opportunity can still be useful when there is no full-fledged PC at hand.

OS allows you to set up accounts of the most popular social networks... However, clients for Twitter and Facebook are not included in the scope of delivery, so the data from these networks will only be used for filling address book... Provided and own file manager, task manager, as well as access to an alternative application store - Samsung Apps.

Testing

According to the developers, a user who opted for the MID and abandoned the functionality of the phone gets two advantages in return: lower cost and longer time. autonomous work... The gain in price of the device is undoubted - the declared cost of the Galaxy S Wi-Fi 4.0 is less than 10 thousand rubles. And here is how the device with autonomy - we decided to check it out.

The manufacturer declares 36 hours in offline when playing sound files MP3 and 5 hours for video playback. Our testing confirmed both numbers, with video playback times even longer.

It is worth noting that it was not possible to determine the exact time of operation as a sound player - after 24 hours of continuous playback (headphones are connected, the volume is maximum, Metallica discography was used as music content) another 36% of the battery remained. In video mode, the device lasted almost 7 hours.

The benchmark scores are pretty good, which is to be expected - the Galaxy S Wi-Fi 4.0 has one of the most powerful configurations among Android devices of this form factor. It only remains to add that in practice this means a fairly quick response of the touch interface, as well as the ability to play mobile games and watch HD video without any problems.

conclusions

Galaxy S Wi-Fi 4.0 is, in a way, a guest from the future. After all, there is no doubt that over time, traditional forms of communication will completely move to the Internet. Already, Skype and SIP are very tightly integrated with conventional telephony, but at the same time they provide much more opportunities, including video calls. And Galaxy S Wi-Fi 4.0 fits perfectly into that future.

But even in modern infrastructure, there are many scenarios for using this device. The Galaxy S Wi-Fi 4.0 Mini Tablet can:

In other words, the Galaxy S Wi-Fi 4.0 can compete with today's popular tablets and will appeal to users looking for a compact, pocket-sized device. A relatively low cost will also be on his side.

Phones have long ceased to be ordinary "dialers" - now they are endowed with huge functionality. Now the phone can be connected to the Internet, used as a notebook, personal computer, audio stations and more.

One of the most useful features is creating a Wi-Fi hotspot from your phone.

In this case, the smartphone can replace the modem offered by the Internet provider. But the most important thing is that you do not need to download any programs or applications beforehand.

In this article, we will look at the Wi-Fi distribution algorithm using the example of the Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphone. This model was not chosen by chance as an example - it is one of the most popular and inexpensive brand devices. Other models of the manufacturer can be viewed and compared at a price on the Aport.ru website.

Algorithm of actions

  1. First you need to open the menu "Settings", and select a section "Net".
  2. In the open list, you will see the section "Modem and access point», then you should select the item "Wi-Fi access point" and customize it.
  3. To start the access point, you need to check the box next to it.
  4. Now you need to enter the name of your network in "SSID", and in the window "Safety" we do not change anything (this is done in order to protect the point from access of unauthorized users).
  5. Now it remains to set a password (8 digits) and save it. After that you get to the menu item "Configure Access Point".
  6. We have configured the access point, now we start the Network. To do this, you must check the box in the menu item "Configure Access Point". As a result, you will see the corresponding icon appear in the notification field.
  7. Now, in order to connect a laptop or computer to the Network, you need to scan the available Wi-Fi networks and find your own (the name that you entered at the beginning of the algorithm), click on this network and enter the password (8 digits). After that the connection should occur.

Sharing Wi-Fi from your phone is a snap. In different models, the algorithm of actions may differ, but everyone can figure it out. A similar connection system is typical for all Samsung Galaxy smartphones, so if you have a different model, this algorithm will also suit you.

Distribution of Wi-Fi from a phone is in great demand, because according to statistics, about 77% of Russian residents regularly use the Internet, so in case of interruptions with a standard connection, you can stay in touch using a smartphone.

Wi-Fi does not connect to Samsung: reasons and how to fix them

Internet communication has become a part of our life, and modern users mobile phones feel uncomfortable with network connectivity problems. Let's figure out why the Internet sometimes does not work on Samsung gadgets, and what can be used for this possible reasons and methods of correcting them.

Common reasons for lack of Wi-Fi on Samsung

  1. SIM card malfunction. Before sounding the alarm and blaming the gadget itself for the malfunction, find out if the SIM card, which is responsible for uninterrupted access to the network, is working. To do this, move the card to another phone and see if wi-fi appears. Also call customer service mobile operator and find out if they have any preventive maintenance on their line that may affect Internet outages. Only after completely eliminating the likelihood of the absence of Wi-Fi for external reasons, contact the official service to diagnose the smartphone itself.
  2. Failed settings. Sometimes, due to inaccurate removal of the battery from the phone, Internet settings can be damaged. Check if they are correct and restore if necessary.
  3. Antenna failure. If the Internet does not work on Samsung, then the device for capturing the network or the antenna is damaged in the device. Such malfunctions occur due to falling and mechanical damage to the parts of the smartphone. Only a professional repair can eliminate the flaw.

"Your mobile service" - an authorized service center in Moscow

In this short tutorial, I will show you how you can distribute the Internet via Wi-Fi from a Samsung phone. I had the opportunity to write an instruction using the example of a Samsung Galaxy J5 smartphone, with an already installed new system Android 7.0 Nougat. Same as Samsung Galaxy S8 and other models. I think this article will be relevant for a long time and will be useful to many. In fact, setting up Hotspot & Tethering on Android 7.0 is very simple, just like on other versions and devices. But many users still have questions about this function.

We will hand out Mobile Internet via Wi-Fi network to other devices. It will be possible to connect other smartphones, laptops, TVs and other devices. Samsung phone we will be in the role of a router. In the "Access Point and Modem" settings, you can also distribute the Internet via Bluetooth and even via a USB cable. Bluetooth is not very relevant now, but cable may come in handy. For example, if you need the Internet on a stationary computer, which does not. You can use your phone as a wired modem to access the Internet through your mobile operator.

Note! Since we will distribute mobile Internet, I advise you to clarify the conditions of your tariff plan... What is your megabyte limit and what is the over-limit fee. Devices connected to the access point may suck all traffic and additional charges may apply.

Some operators block the distribution of the Internet to other devices. Therefore, there is an option that you may not be able to share the Internet.

Let's start configuring the access point.

Sharing the Internet via Wi-Fi from a Samsung phone

Open the top curtain. If your mobile internet is disabled, turn on "Mobile data" and go to settings. In the settings, open the "Connections" section.

Next, open the "Access Point and Modem" section. Turn on the distribution of Wi-Fi with the switch opposite the "Mobile hotspot" item. The status "Enabled" should appear. If you have Wi-Fi enabled, the phone will offer to disable it.

If you noticed, then there is the option to activate the Bluetooth tethering and USB tethering.

Our Samsung is already distributing a Wi-Fi network to which we can connect our devices. By default, the smartphone sets the network name (AndroidAP) and password by itself. To view and change them, as well as see the list of connected devices, just click on the "Mobile hotspot" item itself.

The network name and password can be changed if desired. Just click on them and change. The password must be at least 8 characters long and the network name must be in English letters.

I connected my Windows 10 laptop to the Wi-Fi network shared by the Samsung Galaxy J5. The device immediately appeared in the list of connected devices. If you click on it, you can see some information, or change the name of the device.

In my case, the Internet on a laptop via Samsung smartphone earned immediately and without any problems. In the screenshots above, you probably noticed that I only have 2G (EDGE). Using such an Internet on a computer is certainly not very pleasant. But now very good coverage 3G / 4G, and everything flies there. Even if you distribute the Internet to several devices at the same time.

If you plan to use the function mobile point access somewhere in nature, then I advise you to take a power bank, since the mobile Internet paired with an access point will very quickly drain the battery of your smartphone. I also advise you to disable this feature when you do not need it. Well, keep an eye on the traffic consumption and the terms of your tariff plan. In order not to get a "terrible" bill for the mobile Internet later.

Leave all questions and wishes in the comments. Good luck!

Once upon a time in the world of portable multimedia players, real confusion and vacillation reigned. For example, there was (and still is) such Archos company... Experienced gadget lovers have probably come across the company's products, these PMPs were equipped with hard drives large capacity, a proprietary OS was used, experiments were carried out with Linux, and, in fact, the best PMPs four years ago belonged to this company. A number of recent experiments were related to Android, but the tablet then turned out, to put it mildly, strange, mainly due to the raw software.

Philips, Creative and a number of other companies had their own PMPs. When exactly the segment died, you can guess for a long time - it seems to me that the appearance of the iPod Touch and other similar (similar) gadgets made massive players with large screens simply unnecessary. These were niche products for a very narrow audience. But a holy place is never empty. And lately, we can see how the attempts to revive the PMP are taking place. For example, Dell Streak 5, even if the company positions the device as a tablet, but in fact it is a multifunctional player with advanced communication capabilities. Or take a mini-tablet Samsung Galaxy S Wi-Fi 5, a rather large display diagonal, support for many audio and video formats, no 3G, but there is preparation for full use of Skype. What are these devices missing? Perhaps, hard disk... Yes, this can affect weight, but then the circle will close, and these PMPs of our time will really become a real find for the traveler.

Design, construction

The device is very easily soiled, a glossy back, a shiny display protection in front, all surfaces are quickly covered with prints. The appearance is strict, there is a chrome edging around the screen protector, a speaker mesh on top, and a microphone below. The battery cover cannot be removed; on the back there is a camera and a flash, two speakers. In terms of reproduction Galaxy sound S Wi-Fi can be safely called a kind of miniature music center, it is, of course, not about quality, but about volume. You can calmly output the radio through the speakers and sit idle at the workplace until the guard comes. At the top there is a microSD card slot, the dimensions of the device are 141.3 x 78.2 x 9.9 mm, the tablet weighs about two hundred grams.

On the front panel there is a "peephole" for the front video camera. Overall, appearance passable, but nothing more. For some reason, the expression "workhorse" is spinning in my head. I'm sure Sony would have come up with some very special design for such a device, Apple added aluminum, but Samsung just made a device for every day. Not the most practical because of the soiled.

Display

Unlike the "four", here for some reason the light sensor was removed, and the automatic brightness control does not work. And there is no proximity sensor either, if you speak on Skype, as on the phone, then it is quite possible to press something with your cheek. Display diagonal 5 inches, TFT, resolution 800 x 480 pixels. In general, the screen is bright, contrasting, pictures and videos are pleasant to watch. The viewing angles are good. With the processing of clicks everything is fine, multitouch is supported.

In the sun, the display behaves as expected - that is, nothing is visible, you have to strain your eyes to make out the information.

Control

At the end there is a volume rocker and a power button on top. When you take the device in your right hand, it is just under the thumb, which is good. What's not good is the two touch-sensitive buttons under the display, the set is traditional for Android. The Home button is normal, you could have made it a little larger. Touch controls are less convenient than traditional ones; sometimes you have to fight with the Menu and the arrow, and it’s impossible to get used to it. I don’t think that for the majority it will be important - buttons, after all, are there and work. Let's call it taste.

Memory

As far as I understand, there is only one version with 16 GB of memory so far, there is a microSD card slot (cards up to 32 GB are supported), so the storage can be increased depending on your needs.

Food

Removable lithium-ion battery 2500 mAh, in real life you can watch a video using a tablet for about seven hours, but such a scenario is possible only during a long flight or if you have absolutely nothing to do in the country. In everyday use, the tablet does not behave at all like smartphones on Android base, there is no 3G, and therefore data transfer is carried out only in the Wi-Fi coverage area. It is common truth, but the use case is different. For example, with the Galaxy S II, you will think a hundred times more before reading a book in a traffic jam (if there is no charge for the car). With a tablet, the situation is different, if you listen to music for a couple of hours a day, read the same amount, watch a couple of episodes of a series, use a browser, play, then the charge may last for three days. With intensive use, the tablet lasts a couple of days. But here everything very much depends on your preferences.

Operating system

The operating room is used Android system 2.2 (2.2.1 to be more precise), that is, a long-familiar "robot" named Froyo. An update to Android 2.3 is planned. I will not talk about the features, you can read a separate material on this topic.

There are also special widgets: this is a counter of active applications with the ability to close unnecessary ones, a control panel for wireless interfaces. The main menu contains a file browser, you can select and play music right from here. For some reason, a regular player opens, a standard one.

Compared to Galaxy Wi-Fi 4, my sample still has Second TV programs (I still haven't figured out whether it's a remote control, or software for connecting to Samsung TVs, not clear), navigation Samsung program Drive & Walk (based on Route 66), like a tablet with a smaller display diagonal, has a task manager that allows you to close unnecessary programs and displaying the state of the RAM.

Sound and formats

The tablet comes with good headphones with a playback control unit and a microphone; if you wish, you can replace it with any other model. The sound quality is good, the SoundAlive function is supported - however, I cannot call myself a fan of various effects, I would listen as it is. You can find a complete list of supported formats by looking at the screenshot. In fact, the model is omnivorous, you can immediately download movies, music in almost any form. The SoundAlive function can also be turned on for video, here it is useful, especially if you use closed headphones.

The tablet has very loud speakers, you can use it as a small music center. The player is unusual, there are buttons for switching on the Shuffle mode, activating repeat of all or one song, selecting a section of a song for playback. Volume control is possible both using the buttons and directly in the player. At the top left is the icon for selecting an equalizer preset, there are eight ready-made plus two custom ones. You can play with EQ, volume, clarity and clarity, room for enthusiasts.

When the player is running, a playback control panel appears in the notification menu, a handy addition.

Performance

The processor is 1 GHz, 512 MB of RAM, I did not notice any brakes when using the tablet. Programs start quickly, to display the menu of running applications, press and hold Home button, right from here you can go to the application manager. Active programs are displayed, next to the RAM and processor load counter for each program - for example, the radio takes 7.08 MB and practically does not load the processor, with Angry Birds the situation is different (59.74 MB, and if you go to the task manager immediately after starting the game, then it loads the processor very much, then the numbers decrease). The task manager is well organized, you can immediately close all applications or stop working unnecessary at the moment.

Wireless interfaces

Wi-Fi (802.11 b / g / n) and Bluetooth 3.0 are supported, there is GPS - the usual gentleman's set, but only Bluetooth 3.0 is rarely found even in the most modern devices. If you often transfer something wirelessly, then the tablet here will greatly facilitate your life.

Camera

Nothing special, 3.2 MP, no flash, autofocus (you need to press and hold the virtual button). Geotags are supported, there are various settings for certain conditions. The maximum video resolution is 720 x 480 pixels, autofocus does not work very well, the recording quality is satisfactory for a non-specialized device. The clips look good on the screen of the device.
