PayPal is the largest debit electronic payment system. Allows customers to pay bills and purchases, send and receive money transfers. Since October 2002, it has been a division of eBay.

The history of PayPal began in December 1998 when Confinity was founded by Max Levchin, Peter Thiel, Luke Nosek and Ken Howry. She developed software for the security of handheld devices. In 1999, Confinity launched the PayPal money transfer service.

In March 2000, Confinity merged its business with X.com, an online banking company founded by Elon Musk. Musk, who believed in a successful future for the online money transfer business, and then-CEO of X.com, Bill Harris, had opposing views on how to grow the online payments business. Because of this, Harris left the company in May 2000. In October of the same year, Elon Musk decided that X.com would stop other operations related to Internet banking and focus entirely on the PayPal money service. In the same month, Elon Musk was replaced by Peter Thiel as CEO of X.com.

In 2001, X.com was renamed PayPal.

In 2002, PayPal held an IPO. The company's shares were sold at $ 13 per share.

Soon after the IPO, in July 2002, PayPal was bought by eBay for $ 1.5 billion. By then, over 70% of all eBay auctions were paid using PayPal.

In 2005, PayPal acquired the VeriSign payment solution to expand its e-commerce business and provide additional security support.

In 2007, PayPal announced a partnership with MasterCard that led to the development and launch of the PayPal Secure Card service. software which allows customers to make payments on sites that do not accept PayPal directly by generating a unique one-time MasterCard number for each transaction. By the end of 2007, PayPal had generated revenues of $ 1.8 billion.

In January 2008, PayPal acquired the Israeli startup Fraud Sciences, which develops online risk assessment tools, for $ 169 million. The acquisition strengthened PayPal's own anti-fraud systems.

In November 2008, PayPal acquired Bill Me Later, an online payment company offering credit purchases from over 9,000 online merchants in the United States.

PayPal revenues for Q1 2009 were $ 643 million, up 11% from the previous year. 42% of revenue in the first quarter of 2009 came from international markets. PayPal Total Payments (TPV), Total Transaction Value In Q1 2009 Was Nearly $ 16 Billion

By 2010, PayPal had over 100 million active user accounts in 190 countries around the world.

In 2011, PayPal announced that it was going to enter the offline trading market so that the company's customers could make payments via PayPal in brick-and-mortar stores.

In August 2012, the company announced its partnership with Discover Card to accept PayPal payments at any of the 7 million stores on the Discover Card network.

By the end of 2012, the total value of PayPal payments was $ 145 billion.

In 2013, PayPal acquired IronPearl, a software startup based in Palo Alto, and Braintree, a Chicago-based payment gateway, to further develop its own products and mobile services.

In June 2014, David Marcus announced that he was stepping down as President of PayPal; Markus joined PayPal in August 2011.

On September 30, 2014, it was announced that eBay would spin PayPal into a separate public company. The spin off was completed on July 18, 2015.

On August 6, 2017 it became known about the conclusion of a deal between PayPal and the British technology startup Thyngs. The latter was engaged in mobile payments, and Thyngs technology allows users to lean their phone against stickers at various objects to receive information using QR codes, NFC, Bluetooth, and also make payments.

As a result of the merger, PayPal offered its contactless payment platform and Thyngs gained access to PayPal's huge customer base.

On January 31, 2018, eBay announced that after the existing agreement between eBay and PayPal ends in 2020, PayPal will remain one of the payment options for buyers on eBay.

In the 21st century, it is becoming one of the most promising methods of settlement between the seller and the buyer. Evidence of this is at least the fact that in Russia alone in 2013 the volume of the electronic money market exceeded 2 trillion rubles. If you compare this figure with 2012, you can see that the e-commerce market has grown by 23%. It is easy to understand from these figures that electronic payment systems are gaining more and more popularity every year.

Consider one of the most widely used e-commerce systems around the world - PayPal.

The birth of the system

The history of PayPal dates back to March 2000, when it was invented (through a merger) by several students, one of whom was an emigrant from the Soviet Union (Max Levchin).
Immediately after its creation, the company began to serve electronic auctions, in particular, the world famous eBay (in one month of its existence, more than one million eBay auctions offered payment by the PayPal payment system).

In 2002, the giant eBay corporation acquired PayPal, and since that moment, 50% of purchases at the auction have been made through the latter.

For 2012, 190 countries could settle or trade using PayPal, the system has 24 currencies from all over the world. The beginning of 2015 was the moment of the split between eBay and PayPal, and now they are two different corporations.

check in

So, PayPal. What it is and why it exists, we figured it out. To get started with PayPal, you need to go through the registration process. To start registration in the PayPal system, you need to go to the official website (it is the same for all countries, but for convenience you can select the desired language on it), click on the "Register" button and in the next window select the "Personal account" tab, then click on the button "Proceed".

After that, the browser is redirected to a page where you should specify the country of residence, e-mail, set a password for entering the system (it must consist of at least 8 characters, and it is better to enter both letters and numbers).

The next stage of registration is filling out personal information(name, surname, date of birth, nationality, city, street, postal code, and phone number). All data should be entered correctly in order to avoid further problems, since the account (or PayPal wallet) will be opened exactly according to the specified data, which is then very difficult to change.

account activation

If all the fields are filled in correctly, you need to put a checkbox in the "User Agreement" column, and then click on the "Agree, create an account" button. Then you should check your mail and activate account by clicking on the link in the letter.

Adding a bank card

Let's see how to top up PayPal. There is one more important question. It goes like this: "How is PayPal?" You must first link your bank card to the system. This is done in the user menu. You need to follow the link "Connect and confirm my debit or credit card" (top right on the site). After that, you will need to enter all valid card details, namely: last name, first name, type of card (Visa, Master Card, etc.), number, expiration date and the so-called security code (3 digits that are on the back of the card ), then click on the "Continue" button.

For the card linking process to be successful and to be able to learn how to pay with PayPal, the card must have the equivalent of $ 1.95 on the card. The system will withdraw this amount of money in automatic mode to verify that the card really belongs to the owner. This money will not be lost, but will be returned to your account in exactly one day.

Withdrawal limits

For security purposes, PayPal sets certain limits on withdrawal of funds.

The minimum limit for CIS citizens is $ 50 or the equivalent in another world currency. Maximum withdrawal of funds per day (for residents of the Russian Federation) for this moment- 15,000 rubles, no more than 40,000 rubles can be withdrawn per month. in Russia, the user reviews of which inspire confidence, charges a minimum commission on withdrawals. This is a very advantageous moment.

How can I learn more about limits and how to top up PayPal? You need to go to the "My Account" tab in your account.

How to transfer money to PayPal

To transfer money in the system (say, to another account), just go to the menu and click on the "Sending money" tab. In the window that appears, you will need to enter the data to whom the money will be sent (the recipient's PayPal wallet), the amount and currency. The default is USD, but you can always choose an equivalent in another currency, if necessary.

If there is a question about transferring to your card, which is tied to the system, then it is still easier, since the system provides for the transfer of PayPal money to your personal account. This is good news for users. PayPal - what is it? As you can see, this is a very convenient payment tool.

To transfer funds in the menu, you need to select "My wallet" and mark the item "Transfer to a bank card", indicate which card should be credited to (since you can register not one, but several cards in the system at once), enter the amount and press " Translate". In this case, payment occurs almost instantly, and if everything is in order with the bank (there are no problems with the network, for example), then you can cash out from the card in 2 minutes.

Account types

And we figured out how to use it. Now is the time to tell what accounts there are in the system.

Globally, PayPal accounts can be divided into 4 types (types):

  • personal;
  • premium;
  • student;
  • business.

The most common type of account is personal (or personal). They can freely transfer PayPal money and accept currency. At the same time, contacts with various kinds of payers are provided. In order for the money to be delivered to the address, you just need to have a PayPal wallet and address Email... This is all there is to it. The user cannot send or receive money from any type of card, only transfers within the system are allowed.

Specialized features have been added to premium accounts that are not available to other users. If you are interested in the question of how to transfer money to PayPal from a card, then this view personal account will help to answer it. It is in the premium account that you can freely withdraw money to the cards of other participants or accept funds on your card through the system.

The student account is an innovation in the electronic payment system. With its help, you can easily answer the question of how to transfer money to a child's PayPal account if he is studying or living abroad. A person must be at least 13 years old in order to open an account without any problems. One parent has the right to have up to 4 such accounts. In this case, the real account is not opened, but a system of replenishing the student account from the parent takes place.

The business cabinet allows the user to make the most of the service. You can accept payments as a business, there is no limit on currency turnover per day, and, most importantly, you can accept money to an account from any other bank or from an electronic wallet (not PayPal). Unfortunately, there is no such possibility in the types of accounts discussed above.

User verification

To begin with, let's define the phrase "PayPal user verification", what it is, we will also consider. Let's explain the word "verification" in simple words... It means confirmation (in literal translation), and in our case - confirmation of the veracity of the filled in information about the user who is registered in the system. That is, the system requires certain actions on the part of the user in order to make sure that the information that he provided is 100% true (for example, you can register as Vasya Pupkin, but in fact it will not be).

Until the user is verified, payments can be made, but with certain restrictions. To remove the latter, you need to send in electronic form or by mail a scanned copy of the passport (with registration) and confirm the number mobile phone... This data is confidential, you can be sure that it will not fall into the wrong hands through PayPal.

Verification benefits:

  • sending and receiving any amount of money at any time of the day;
  • trust in a verified user is many times greater than in an unconfirmed user;
  • lightning-fast sending of payments from a bank account without delays and other minor troubles;
  • availability of exclusive services (among them - the protection of the seller)

Why PayPal?

Among all kinds of electronic on the Internet, PayPal takes the 1st place. And this is no accident. For what is PayPal if not the safest place to store your personal savings? Advanced technology and detects fraud of any kind. Getting to your personal funds is almost impossible, even if the robber is an experienced hacker. The account is tied to a physical key generated by the system. This key can be stored not on the network, but, say, on a USB flash drive. Without access to the key, no one will ever be able to steal any amount of money from the account.

A little about the commission

How to transfer money to PayPal and not spend on commission? In fact, nothing. The system charges a commission, but only on completed transactions. You do not have to pay for opening an account and its maintenance.

To withdraw funds to a check (real, which can be cashed in any bank), you need to give the system $ 1.50.

The commission depends on the country in which (or to which) the transfer will be made, on how the money is transferred by PayPal (bank or wire transfer), as well as on the currency of the transfer.

For example: if you withdraw money from your personal account to your account in the USA, you do not need to pay anything, while in Bulgaria you will need to pay $ 2.5 for such a transfer.

The system also provides for a return commission. If for any reason you need to return the funds back (how to transfer money to PayPal, described above), then a certain amount will also be deducted for this.

As for the commission within the system, it also exists, and depends on the country and on other factors. In the system itself, it will be necessary to divide 0.5-2% of the total amount of the transaction or transfer. Again, it is impossible to name a specific figure, since everything depends on many factors.

Conclusion

From the above, it became clear what PayPal is and how to use it. In any case, the choice will always be yours. The system has established itself and proved its right to exist by the fact that it is trusted by millions of people around the world - it has existed for more than 15 years. If the question is in transfers within the Russian Federation, then an alternative can be found, but if the proceeds are from different countries then you should definitely choose PayPal.

Hello dear readers of the blog site. Today I want to continue filling the rubric with materials. Before that, I wrote about, and which are the most. But not runet alone ... In the world now the most popular system is Paypal, that's what I want to talk about in this article.

True, for users from the countries of the former union that form the main part of today's Runet (Ukraine, Belarus and other countries, except for Russia and the Baltic countries), Paypal does not provide the maximum set of functions, but, as a rule, they are enough for almost everyone. More democratic in this regard is the international monetary system (moneybookers). And they look completely unprincipled or.

For Russia, since 2011, it has become possible to replenish its account in Paypal from a linked bank card, and since September 2013 it has become possible to use such currencies as rubles for transactions, as well as withdraw funds earned or received as a result of the transfer. to your account with a Russian bank(no commission).

What has been talked about for so long has happened - PayPal finally came to Russia... Now, little by little, the range of Runet online stores will be able to pay for goods with this electronic currency, and the Ebay online auction will add sellers from Russia, who previously could withdraw earned money only to US banks in dollars, and now have the opportunity to operate in rubles.

Why do we need Paypal and how to use it in Russia

So it turns out that Paypal is now quite suitable for running an online business in Runet, and the owners of domestic payment systems will have to seriously think about improving the quality, convenience and safety of work, because they have a powerful competitor with a very large baggage of developments in the bourgeoisie and with almost limitless financial possibilities ...

And, of course, this system is still ideal for paying for goods you buy in foreign online stores or on. Actually, it is for these purposes that I have used it so far, but I hope that domestic Internet entrepreneurs will begin to actively support it. Why?

Because Paypal has a number of interesting buns.

With a favorable combination of circumstances, this whole business may end for you with a refund of money to your account, which will practically not be possible to repeat with the payment methods that are used by online stores on the Russian Internet now (robokassa, etc.).

There is another payment option that is not yet very popular among the Runet audience - directly from a plastic card (even the cheapest cards allow you to do this). Actually, my acquaintance with Paypal began with the fact that I needed to purchase some kind of gadget in a Chinese store. I had two payment options: directly from my "Visa Electron" card or by means of sticks (the slang name for this virtual bourgeois money). When I got acquainted with the pros and cons of both, the last option seemed to me more reliable. Why?

Well, precisely because it is more reliable and secure in terms of keeping money on a payment card. According to the data collected in Paypal, the probability of running into fraudulent activities on the Internet when making payments directly from the card is 1.8%, i.e. about every fiftieth payment goes nowhere. At the same time, when paying through this system you reduce the risk of losing money tenfold (up to 0.17%), which is good news. I think that in Runet the statistics will be about the same.

As I mentioned, you, as a buyer, will be able to register and make payments with PayPal completely free of charge. True, there may again appear several pitfalls. The system really does not charge you anything for transferring money, but you can lose on currency exchange (they still receive income due to the difference in currency rates), for example, if you have rubles on your payment card, and the online store accepts dollars.

Although you can set up currency conversion in your bank that issued your card (it's not difficult, the process will be shown below), if the exchange rate there is more profitable than in Paypal itself. Speaking of greed, by the way. The system also receives income from the storage on deposits of those funds that users did not have time to spend. Well, this is so, by the way.

Commissions and security of working with money in Pai Pal

Cheese in any way is not free, and in this most popular payment system bourjunet take a commission, but only from the recipient of the money(i.e. from an online store, in our example). This is where the second pitfall lies. The store can act ugly and add the percentage of the commission charged from it in Paypel to the price of the product (usually around 5%).

truth when receiving personal payments Again, you will not be charged a commission from friends and relatives, unless the money was transferred to you from a bank card linked to your account.

All options for fees charged in the paypal can be viewed.

But if both of these pitfalls you will not meet, then, indeed, it will be possible to use the system as a buyer absolutely free of charge, while getting higher protection against fraudulent actions, and in the case of a purchase on eBay - also free a guarantee for the correctness of the transaction(when you contact the "Dispute", the seller's account will be blocked and the money paid will be returned to you over time, and if they are no longer on the seller's account, then Paypal itself will return the money).

Another thing I liked about Paypal, for example, in comparison with WebMoney, is the ease of registration and work with your account. I have already written in some detail about web money and those 99 ways that allow you to work with them with varying degrees of risk of losing your money (, and), but you should take at least a short break in working with this electronic money, and you are again puzzled and you understand how uncomfortable and overly complicated everything is.

I really want to hope that in the Paypel system there will be no security problems on such a scale as in WebMoney. Although, the theft of registration data and plastic card data using fake letters inviting to authenticate on fake websites () is still very important. But here it will be enough to take it as a rule - never enter a resource related to money by any links from letters or websites, only from the address bar or from browser bookmarks.

Registration in Paypal and linking a plastic card

To register, go to the Paypal homepage and click on the " Register now" .

You will be prompted to select the type of account that you want to register with Paypal. The "Corporate" option provides for a lower commission for accepting funds to your account, but in RuNet the use of this payment system for online business is not yet common, but there is an opportunity to create a corporate account, and if necessary, you can use it.

Well, for the majority of future Paypal users, the best option would be to register an account for individuals by clicking on the "Continue" button. You will be prompted to fill out a form with personal data. I probably don't need to tell you that data must be real, because the "sticks" are very concerned about security and at the slightest suspicion that someone is trying to manage your account, it will be blocked (for example, if you more often than usual access it from different computers or from another country).

How can you unblock Paypal account? You will receive a letter where they will inform you about the blocking. Do not go, just in case, directly to the link in the letter (phishing is possible), but enter their official website from the address bar (https://www.paypal.com/ru/) or from your browser bookmarks. If your account is really blocked, then you will have to send a scan of your foreign or ordinary passport (the first page and the page with registration), well, and they may also be asked to send scans of any payment documents.

If you indicated not real personal data during registration or made a mistake when entering, then there may be a problem with restoring access and the loss of funds frozen in the Paypal account may occur:

As I already said, your login in the system will be the specified Email... Probably you shouldn't use this mailbox then directly to work with mail, because in this way you will shine your login. Although, this is your own business. Also, it has recently become mandatory to indicate your mobile phone number, otherwise you will not be able to register. It can then be useful when restoring access to Paypal if the password is lost.

It is not at all necessary to enter the details of your payment card when registering in Paypal. You can simply uncheck the corresponding checkbox and link it later when you have it. But if you still have a suitable card () and it has an amount equivalent to at least a couple of dollars, then enter its full number and expiration date (located on its title side), and then turn over the card and enter three digits of the confirmation code ( verification) CSC:

Confirmation of ownership of the mailbox you specified is to follow the link from the letter received from Pai Pal.

How to link a card to a Paypal account and verify it

More difficult and not trivial is the confirmation of the ownership of the credit card, the details of which you specified during registration (well, or which you connected to your account later). This process is scientifically called verification (). If you do not pass this procedure, then your status in Paypal will be indicated as "Unverified", and next to it there will be a link "Pass verification".

In principle, connecting the card and the process of its verification is not at all mandatory, but after going through it, you will most likely increase the limit for a one-time payment, and also reduce the likelihood of blocking your account for any more or less important reason (you will not have to send copies of documents again) ... I advise you not to be lazy and go through this procedure. Also without verification of your card, you will not be able to receive transfers in dollars and other currencies other than rubles.

To get started, you will need to enter the Paypal website under your username (address mailbox specified during registration) and password, and then go from the main page by the add link and confirmation of your card (there will also be a link to confirmation of the mailbox, if you have not already done so - see the screenshot above).

Payment card verification is carried out as follows. After adding it, you re-enter this page, click the mouse on the desired card and select the "Confirm" option. An amount approximately equal to two dollars is withdrawn from your card (60 rubles were withdrawn from me). This money will then be returned to your Paypal account.

Your task is to familiarize yourself with the details of the payment made by means of Internet banking, data from the received SMS or by calling the bank (or a trip). The first four digits that will appear in a record like "PP * XXXX CODE or PayPal * XXXXCODE" are confirmation (verification) code your possession of this card linked to your account.

For example, for me (Russia) the amount of a one-time payment cannot exceed 60,000 rubles. This is enough for me, but you can make a reserve for the future and press the button "Increase limits":

Your account limits and capabilities will depend on how much information you have verified about yourself. Ideally, you need to confirm not only the email box, but also add and then confirm the card attached to the account. Well, and in order to get maximum opportunities, you will also need to confirm your passport data by sending a scan of your passport.

Paypal turns out in this regard to be a payment system far from anonymity, but it significantly increases the security of work. It is thanks to this that it has become the most popular method of paying for the won lots on eBay, and at the same time in all major online stores of the bourgeoisie. In Runet, Paypel is still not so popular, but most likely this is a temporary phenomenon, especially in light of the fact that now you can open your account there in rubles and they can be withdrawn without additional commission, if necessary, to your account in any Russian bank ...

Paypal withdrawal methods for Russia

The possibility of withdrawing to accounts in Russian banks and storing funds in ruble equivalent appeared in Paypal only in September 2013. Personally, I found out about this in a rather roundabout way. I came across on Sercha (this is one of) the topic that WebMoney has an official opportunity to exchange sticks on their own exchange.

The principle of operation on this exchange has remained the same as in the one where different currencies of webmoney change among themselves (read more about this at the link given just above). In order to make an exchange, you had to link your Paypal account to your account (for which I logged into the system).

Several years ago, I was very surprised when, having logged in and logged into the official Paypal website, instead of almost four hundred dollars that I needed to change, I saw the amount in rubles, which can be seen in the screenshots given in this article. This screenshot was taken a long time ago, when the service interface had a different look:

It turns out that my Paypal dollars were converted into rubles without my knowledge and, pleasantly, they did not take interest. After that, I got into their help to read about the possibilities of withdrawing these rubles into real money and found out that you can easily transfer them to your IP account and, again, the commission will not be withheld. Well, in general, everything is chocolate.

Alternatively, you can withdraw money from Pai Pal to the account of any bank card that you probably have. Discover details of the account linked to the card(his number and BIC) can be either by phone at the bank, or through online banking, if you have one connected.

It remains only to go to the "Account" tab and click on the button "Withdraw funds"(There is exactly the same button on the main page of the service called "Overview").

If you haven't added a bank account to your account yet, then it's time to do it (by clicking on the corresponding button on the "Account" tab from the top menu):

Next, you will be asked to check the entered details, and after clicking on the "Continue" button, you will be informed that an account with a Russian bank needs to be verified... The process of this action is quite simple and is described in the screenshot below.

When the transfers arrive, you just have to go through Internet banking and see the specific numbers of transfers. You will need to enter them on the same "Account" tab.

Actually, all that remains is to enter them:

Your official page on the PayPal.Me website for accepting payments to your account

A relatively new opportunity to receive payments to your account has appeared in Paypal. In this case no need to shine your email(to which the account is linked) or phone number... You will receive the money to the account to which PayPal.Me is linked to this page.

Interesting? Not really? So at first it seemed to me superfluous, but not so long ago, when trying to withdraw money from one affiliate program, there was no other suitable withdrawal method, except by specifying an address like PayPal.Me/what_there_more. I had to create such a page, which I recommend to you in advance (it will not be superfluous).

That's it, now you can place a link like https://www.paypal.me/ktonanovenkogo on your website or anywhere else to accept payments from well-wishers, buyers or clients. It will be possible to immediately set the amount that will be requested by simply adding it at the end of the link. Like this:

When clicking on it, the user will see the following oil painting:

Well, somewhere like that. What do you think about the prospects of using Paypal in Russia? Will they crush our domestic players or the train has left and no one will use this money?

Good luck to you! See you soon on the pages of the blog site

Now every second grader knows very well that there are colossal fortunes on the Internet and hundreds of billions of dollars are spinning. It is today the Internet - a global propaganda machine that jokingly plugged television, newspapers and radio into the belt. It is easy to believe in the World Wide Web, when it is already clear: it is here that humanity finally migrated in the 21st century.

And you try to imagine yourself in the place of the discoverers who came to the Web at the dawn of its youth. Then, when it was not even assumed that one day the Internet would explode the well-being of this world and redraw all the rules of the game. The Web pioneers knew nothing for certain, took great risks and were often the object of ridicule. And yet, it is on their optimism and faith that the current Internet is built. That's PayPal company, which is now thundering all over the world, at one time was just a dream, which was lucky enough to take shape as a leader and a billionaire.

About some unknown whim PayPal stories in Runet is known only to a small number of people. We will talk about this below. But this fact does not make the role of PayPal any less significant for the global Internet. Therefore, this text is here.

How did PayPal start?

You don't need to think that history of PayPal is a story of easy success dotted with roses. Rather, it can be called an example of a successful symbiosis, when two companies, which alone would have remained in the settlements of fame, together managed to create a sought-after tandem.

And so, it all started with the fact that there were two companies, but until some point they fought their way to fame one by one. So, the first participant in a successful symbiosis was called simply and unpretentiously - Xcom... Founded the company at the end of the twentieth century Elon Musk, which immediately sent her on the financial rails. In fact, he wanted to create a kind of intermediary platform that would send payments via the Internet for a small percentage. This person had a lot of experience, a lot of ideas, but serious problems with ensuring the security of encryption.

This is where the help of a former Kiev resident came in handy. Max Levchin("Skill" - programming and cryptography) and Peter Thiel("Skill" - finance), which organized the company in 1998 Confinity... Do not be confused by the unfamiliar name of the company, fortunately, the site on which the main application was running is known to almost everyone. Yes, yes, it was paypal.com... Of course, the principles of operation of that service were decently different from the work, but nevertheless, it was at that time that the main algorithms were already being tested.

I will not go into the details of the merger, I will only say that due to some technical issues, the existence of these companies separately was possible, but unproductive. Conversely, when merged, each side complemented each other. It turned out to be a powerful online tool that could boldly butt for leadership on the Internet.

Today they say, they say, PayPal was good, because they had no competitors, and therefore all they had to do was catch the wave and substitute. Nonsense! Just at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, the Web was full of more or less similar services that could take over the palm. There are two very strong arguments in favor of PayPal:

  • but). they were not greedy and took a small percentage of transactions;

  • b). they immediately set the protection of their service to such a high level that competitors only blushed with anger and cursed.

PayPal: growth by leaps and bounds

According to the chronicle of the Network, the merger of the companies took place in 2000, and the general name was decided to keep the name of the main service - PayPal. By the way, in translation it is something like “payment friends” or “pay, friend”. And immediately a great success: PayPal began to be offered as an alternative means of payment on the already popular one.

In addition, other companies noticed the payment system. The popularity of the service grew, and in 2002 PayPal put its shares up for auction. And luck again: the shares attracted about $ 1 billion in investments, which is fantastic for a company with a two-year history. Serious work has begun on the global conquest of the Web.

I don’t know how the history of PayPal would have developed further if in the same 2002 the already mentioned Ebay had not bought the system for $ 1.5 billion. I don’t even know if this amount can be trusted, because in some places I have come across figures of both $ 2 billion and even $ 2.5 billion. In principle, this is not so important for us, any of the amounts looks damn impressive. Then the following happened: he took PayPal under his wing, making it the main payment system on his site.

And again I have to praise the foresight of the auctioneers, because they not only got themselves a pocket payment system, but also did everything to ensure that it had its own name. Over the next years, PayPal handled millions of payments from Ebay, but it also kept growing. So, just a couple of years after the ransom, this payment system has become the most authoritative in the dollar zone. All of its competitors by that time either closed safely, or lagged behind the leader by a whole corps.

When the PayPal management realized that one dollar would not be enough, the introduction of a mass of new payment currencies began: yen, yuan, euro, Canadian dollar, Czech crown, etc. At the same time, multiplatformity was introduced: the service was translated into more and more languages. PayPal's triumph soon became apparent to everyone. Besides…

PayPal in Russia

At you, but in our homeland with you, PayPal has not become a truly popular payment system. There are two main reasons for this.

  • Firstly, the opportunity to withdraw your money to the account of a Russian bank appeared only at the end of 2013. Before that, they had to go for too muddy frauds like withdrawal through local "hucksters" or not entirely transparent payments through gasket banks.

  • Secondly PayPal came too late: when there was a legal opportunity to withdraw your money from the system, the market was already firmly staked out by local "authorities" like Yandex.Money. Finally, the PayPal contingent turned out to be too specific: in Russia, this payment system is used mainly by buyers of Ebay and Western stores, or those who work with the West directly.

Be that as it may, PayPal remains the main payment system in the West and, who knows, perhaps the company will soon significantly strengthen its presence in Russia. Wait and see.

PayPal(from English- "friend helping to pay") - the largest debit electronic payment system. Allows customers to pay bills and purchases, send and receive money transfers. Since October 2002, it has been a division of eBay. As of July 20, 2015, PayPal and eBay shares are sold separately on the market. The spin-off PayPal is currently valued higher on the stock market than its former parent company.

As of 2012, PayPal operates in 190 countries (although not all provide a full range of services), has more than 164 million registered users, and works with 24 national currencies.

When paying for purchases, the most important feature of PayPal is to provide security guarantees for both the buyer and the seller, see. For Russian PayPal users, the possibility of accepting payments to the account appeared only in October 2011, and at the moment it is possible to withdraw funds from the account for Russian users to accounts in Russian banks. To maximize customer coverage and provide quality services, PayPal plans to start cooperation with Russian Post.

The so-called PayPal Zero system. (besides India works in 17 more countries)

Crimea

In January 2015, PayPal ceased operations in Crimea in accordance with international sanctions against Russia and Crimea.

Turkey

Eight years after the company first started operating in the country, Paypal ceased operations in Turkey on June 6, 2016, when Turkish financial regulator BDDK denied it a payment license. Regulators have demanded that Paypal data centers be located inside Turkey to facilitate compliance with government and court orders for content blocking and tax tracking. PayPal said the closure will affect tens of thousands of businesses and hundreds of thousands of consumers in Turkey.

Palestine

PayPal is available in Israel, but not available in the Palestinian territories. Palestinians working in the West Bank or Gaza also cannot use PayPal, but Israelis living in West Bank settlements can. This discrepancy has prompted some tech companies to look for ways to change PayPal's policies.

Ukraine

Residents of Ukraine can use PayPal only in the following order: you can deposit funds into an account, but you cannot withdraw or withdraw funds, this is the so-called system Send only which operates in a total of 96 countries. The reason for this limitation is the limits on the part of the governments of these states. On March 2, 2016, a meeting was held in Warsaw between representatives of the National Bank of Ukraine and PayPal, during which it was stated that Ukraine does not exist in the development strategy of PayPal at the moment.

PayPal Here

In March 2012, PayPal introduced a new device called PayPal Here, which will allow you to pay using credit card via a mobile phone. Supported on iPhone and Android OS.

Bank status

In 2007, PayPal received a banking license in Luxembourg, which gave it the right to engage in banking activities throughout the European Union and the obligation to comply with the laws and regulations of the Financial Sector Supervision Commission.

Commissions

Before the official entry into the Russian market in September 2013 and the introduction of the RUB currency, the commission for transferring funds in Russia in US dollars was 3.4% + $ 0.30 USD. The same tariff is currently valid in Ukraine, Belarus and the Republic of Moldova after the launch of PayPal in these countries. In Russia, payments in any currency other than RUB between PayPal accounts registered in Russia are prohibited. Currently, the commission in Russia is 3.9% + 10 RUB. External payments from Russia, Ukraine, the Republic of Belarus and the Republic of Moldova are allowed in any currency.

For Russia, the conversion of USD and any other currency when it is withdrawn in the form of rubles to a Russian bank account or when automatically converted into rubles upon receipt of money (if the user has configured so) is subject to a 2.5% commission to the current market rate at the time of the application. The cross-rate commission when paying or transferring money in a currency other than the payment currency is 4% to the market rate and is applied automatically at the time of payment by card or account balance. Withdrawing RUB to a bank account in its pure form, however, is free. Payments to Russian bank accounts come from the Moscow branch of Deutsche Bank within 3-7 business days.

The commission percentage can be reduced for sellers with a turnover of more than $ 3000 USD / month. The minimum possible commission is 2.4% and can be received with a turnover of $ 100,000 USD / month.

Summary table of standard PayPal commissions when accepting payments from different regions of the world for accounts registered in Russia. The main account currency is USD.

Commission size Region of the world
3.9% + 10 RUB Russia (only rubles)
4.3% + $ 0.30 USD Scandinavia
4.4% + $ 0.30 USD Western Europe, USA, Canada
4.9% + $ 0.30 USD Eastern Europe
5.4% + $ 0.30 USD The rest of the world

The amount of additional fixed commission (for example: $ 0.30 USD, € 0.35 EUR, £ 0.20 GBP, ¥ 40 JPY, 10 RUB, etc.) depends on the payment currency and is different for each currency. And the percentage depends on the country or region where the payment came from. This is important when selling on eBay, where PayPal's commission is added to the standard auction commission (10%). Thus, the maximum possible cumulative commission for an eBay auction using PayPal for worldwide sales for Russian accounts is 15.4% + $ 0.30 USD.

In world practice, on sites when accepting PayPal payments, it is often customary to designate the countries of Western Europe as Europe I and Eastern as Europe II. Therefore, it is better to check a more specific list of these countries directly on the PayPal website.

Commissions for Europe II countries, in the case of using a balance on a PayPal account or bank account, are lower compared to using a bank card. For transfers within the country, it is zero, for international transfers - 1%.

Criticism

In October 2011, the developers of the decentralized social network Diaspora announced a fundraising campaign. More than $ 45,000 was raised in a few days, but Paypal froze Diaspora's account without any explanation. On November 12, 2011, the main developer Ilya Zhitomirsky was found dead in his house. After a large number of complaints and threats of prosecution, the apology account was unfrozen, but no explanation was given.

In May 2014, Paypal blocked the account of the Rosuznik project, which was protecting activists detained at political rallies. The project tweeted: "I called PayPal, explained that he was closing our wallet, because he did not want to have risks associated with our activities."

On May 14, 2015, Vsevolod Chagaev, an activist of the Solidarity movement, announced on his Twitter account that Paypal had blocked his account intended to raise funds to print the Putin report. War. The payment system explained its position by the fact that it “does not provide an opportunity to use its system to collect donations for the activities of political parties and political goals in Russia,” despite the fact that its rules of use do not explicitly mention the collection of funds for political parties or political purposes.

In April 2015, PayPal stopped serving residents of Moscow streets, whose names are derived from Crimean place names. Later, the company checked the place name filters, and the sanctions against Muscovites were lifted.
