Skype doesn't work on Windows XP and you don't know what to do? Well, many fans of older versions of Windows have faced this problem. In our new article, we will talk about why Skype does not start on Windows XP and what methods you can use to solve this problem.

Why doesn't Skype work on Windows XP?

Skype does not work on Windows 7 - this circumstance very often becomes a problem for those who remain faithful to previous versions of Windows and do not want to upgrade to newer ones. But, if Skype suddenly went out of order, is it worth immediately updating your computer to Windows 10, or can you still try to restore the program to work on the usual "seven"? This is exactly what you can learn from our article.

Why isn't Skype working on Windows 7?

So, the main reason that Skype does not work on Windows 7 is the end of support for this application. by Microsoft for all outdated versions of Windows. But, as practice has shown, Skype works well for some users, despite the old operating system. So what can you do to get your Skype back online?

First, it is worth eliminating the most common causes that interfere with the normal operation of the application (for example, if).

Too old version of Skype

If you do not want to update Windows, then Skype still needs to be updated, otherwise it is guaranteed to stop functioning over time. You can update the program like this:

  • Open Skype on your laptop or computer.
  • Various tabs can be seen at the top of the screen. Click on the one called "Help".
  • A list of functions will appear in front of you. Click on "Check for Updates".

  • If there is already a new version of this program, then you will find out about it by the window that appears on the screen with a message that the update is ready. Click on "Download" to start downloading it.
  • When the download is complete, a button will appear. "Install new version"... Click on it.
  • In the window that appears prompting Skype to make changes to file system device, click on the "Yes" option.
  • In order for the process to be successfully completed, you will need to reconfirm your agreement with the Skype policy, for which you need to click on "I agree, further".
  • It remains only to wait for the downloaded files to be integrated into the system. Then check if Skype is working. Maybe you just need it right.

If the update did not help, then you can try to completely remove the program from the device, and then download it again from the official website. Very often this method helps.

Low internet speed

Perhaps the most common reason for Skype refusal is that the data transfer rate to your device is too low. This can happen due to a failure of your operator or due to an inappropriate tariff plan... You can check the speed of your Internet connection on the Speedtest website.

Outdated computer or laptop drivers

Drivers are part of the software of your device and their timely updating is also very important for the operation of both the computer itself and the programs installed on it. Here's how to find out if everything is ok with the drivers:

  • Enter "My Computer" and open there "Device Manager".
  • Find the "System Properties" or "System" tab.
  • Click on the inscription "Equipment".

  • Look carefully to see if there are any special marks in front of the driver names. If there is a red cross or a yellow exclamation mark, then the drivers are out of order.

Problems with Adobe Flash Player

If Adobe Flash Player is missing on the device or out of order, then this fully explains why Skype does not work on Windows 7. In order to check its work, you need to do the following:

  • Click on this link
  • On the page on which you find yourself, there will be a special window, which provides up-to-date information on the version of Adobe Flash Player that you have installed at the moment. It's called Version Information.
  • Below you can view a table listing the new versions of Adobe Flash Player in combination with their intended browsers. Find your browser and see if the contents of the Version Information box match the current version.

  • If your Adobe Flash Player is outdated, then replace it with a more recent version, which can be found and downloaded here: https://get.adobe.com/en/flashplayer/?promoid=BUIGP

If all the previous methods have been used, and the application has not been restored, you should try more complex options.

What to do if Skype does not work on Windows 7?

These methods can help deal with your problem if the usual solutions are not helpful.

  • Open Skype again.

The first scenario is far from the most dangerous. This is an incorrect installation of the application. It is after it that Skype does not open. Or it starts to malfunction. This type of initialization is also called "curve". Why is this happening? Even minor glitches and malfunctions occurring during the installation of the application can lead to this problem... As a result, Skype will not start. Or it will start to glitch. Correcting the situation is easy and simple - just uninstall the program and reinstall it. It is recommended that you do not perform any actions on the computer during initialization. Still not opening Skype? Then the reasons may lie elsewhere.

For example, the fact that the user has installed himself an old and already inoperative version of the application. Usually, only the latest software builds are posted on the official Skype website. Sometimes users use existing installers that were downloaded a long time ago. Hence the problem. As a rule, in this case, the application will issue a warning that it is necessary to update due to the lack of support earlier installed version programs. Skype won't open on your computer? What to do? Listen to the recommendations given by the operating system and update the application. There are no other options. It is not necessary to install the latest version. You just need to pay attention to the fact that the software being initialized is supported in principle.

After update

First, you can simply restart your computer. Sometimes this technique works. Typically, after any initialization or upgrade, a restart of the operating system is required. Secondly, you can try to completely uninstall the program, then manually reinstall it. Often automatic updates are causing Skype crashes. Therefore, many do not recommend using it too often.

Drivers

Viruses

Registry

But that's not all. Skype won't open? Gives an error message? If all of the above problems did not occur, then you should make sure that the program is compatible with operating system... Quite often on windows 10 Skype refuses to work. The situation can be corrected only by reinstalling Windows to an older version. Fortunately, incompatibility is not often the reason for Skype to stop working.

Ways to troubleshoot Skype launch problems

The inability to launch Skype is a fairly common problem that windows users regularly encounter. Today we will look at how you can fix the problem with the launch of Skype, successfully returning the normal functioning of the program.

Various factors can affect the occurrence of a problem with launching Skype. Below we will consider the basic recommendations that will allow the program to work on a computer running windows.

What if Skype won't launch?

Method 1: restart your computer

If Skype worked fine before, but at one point the program refused to start, the first step towards solving the problem will be to restart the computer.

After restarting, the computer returns to normal and, as a rule, many problems that were relevant before are successfully solved.

Method 2: reset all settings

Conflicting settings configured in Skype can lead to the fact that the program refuses to even start. In this case, we will try to reset all configuration settings to resolve the issue.

First, you need to close Skype completely. To do this, click on the Skype icon in the lower right corner of the tray and select “Quit Skype” in the displayed context menu.

Now open the Run window with the Win + R key combination and enter the following command in the pop-up window:

When you click the "OK" button, the screen will display the Skype folder, in which you need to find and delete the shared.xml file.

Launch Skype and check the functionality of the program.

Method 3: reinstalling the program

The next most efficient way solutions to the problem - a complete reinstallation of Skype. The system may have experienced a system crash, as a result of which Skype began to malfunction.

Reinstalling Skype starts with uninstalling the program. Please note, if you uninstall Skype for troubleshooting, you need to uninstall the program completely, i.e. it is advisable not to resort to the standard uninstallation method through the "Control Panel", but to use special tools, for example, the Revo Uninstaller program, which will allow you to first uninstall Skype in the standard way, and then additionally scan the system for remaining folders, files and keys in the registry related to program.

Method 4: eliminate viruses

Since Skype is considered one of the most popular cross-platform programs, it is quite obvious that the action of many of many viruses is aimed precisely at undermining the operation of this software.

That is why, if you encounter a problem with Skype, you should suspect viral activity, which means that you can run a system scan using your antivirus or a special healing utility Dr.Web CureIt.

If virus threats were detected on your computer as a result of scanning, you will need to get rid of them and then restart your computer. It is likely that viruses have seriously disrupted Skype, so after removing the viruses, you will need to reinstall the program, as described above.

Method 5: troubleshoot authorization issues

In this case, the problem can be solved if you cannot log in to the program.

First, click on the Skype icon in the tray with the right mouse button and in the pop-up context menu, make a choice in favor of the item "Exit Skype".

After closing the program, open windows explorer, select the C drive, in it go to the "Program Files" folder, then open the "Skype" folder and, finally, the "Phone" folder. In this folder you will see the Skype icon, on which you need to right-click and in the menu that appears, go to the item "Send" - "Desktop (create a shortcut)".

Right-click on the created shortcut and select Properties from the pop-up menu.

In the "Object" block, immediately after the address "C: \ Program Files (x86) \ Skype \ Phone \ Skype.exe" (in your case it may differ), you need to add a space, and then write the following:

Thus, the updated address will look something like this: "C: \ Program Files (x86) \ Skype \ Phone \ Skype.exe" / legacylogin. Save your changes.

Start Skype by double-clicking on the created shortcut on the desktop.

Method 6: update windows

Suppose you are a windows 7 user and you have deactivated on your computer automatic installation updates. If you have just such a situation, it is likely that Skype in your case refuses to work due to incompatibility with an outdated version of windows OS.

In this case, you need to go to the "Control Panel" - "Center windows updates"And run a check for updates. If, as a result of the check, the system found various updates, including optional ones, you will need to be sure to install all of them without exception.

These are the main ways to solve Skype launch problems. We hope these tips have helped you.

Solving Skype problems in windows 7

Even fairly reliable programs, such as Skype, can present us with nasty surprises... Skype problems in windows 7 are often noticed by users, but, as you know, any problem can be solved using various methods.

Unable to login

If the Skype installation was successful, the program starts and functions normally, but when you enter the login, problems begin and you simply cannot go to the contact list and start working, it is worth checking one single setting.

Important: do only what is written below - any uncontrolled change in other program settings can lead to unpredictable consequences.

Open the menu item "Tools / Connection Problem", then change the value of the number in the window (in the sentence "Use port X for incoming connections") to 10631. If next to the phrase "Use ports Y and Z as incoming alternatives" there is a check mark - remove it. After making these changes, exit the settings window and try to login again. If the problem was a busy port that was trying to use Skype, then the program should work correctly, otherwise you should try another solution. If you did all of the above, but it did not help, then you can find a solution to the problem with logging into Skype here.

Unknown error

If skype does not start windows 7 or constantly crashes, leaving you alone with an incomprehensible error, do not despair - the solution to the problem is quite simple. Just delete Skype from your computer, then erase the folder in which some files from the program are stored (unfortunately, usually this folder is not deleted when you reinstall Skype itself, so you have to deal with it manually) and reinstall Skype. After this simple procedure, Skype should start working normally, without any errors.

Important: The path to the folder: C: \ Users \ "Username" \ AppData \ Roaming.

White window

If you run the program, but you see only a white window on which there is not a single element that you could click on, do not rush to reinstall Skype. Sometimes specially written automated tools such as the "Fix it" program help. Just download, install and work on.

Important: "Fix it" does not work with all windows versions and Skype, so you shouldn't expect 100% of the result.

If the program does not help, try resetting the Internet Explorer browser settings, even if you have not used it for a long time.

  1. Launch your browser.
  2. Select the menu item "Tools".
  3. Go to "Internet Options" A new window will open.
  4. In the window that opens, select the Advanced (optional) tab.
  5. Press the "Reset" button
  6. Check the item "Delete personal settings"
  7. Press the "Reset" button again.

Important: after that, Skype and the browser must be closed, and the computer itself must be restarted for the changes to take effect.

Skype is slow

If your Skype just slows down on windows 7, try using one of the tips below:

  • The simplest solution is to restart. Note. You just need to close the program, and not just minimize it to the tray. To do this, right-click on the icon located in the toolbar at the bottom and select the action "Quit Skype". Wait a couple of minutes, then start the program again.
  • If problems appeared after updating the program to a new version, try installing the version that you used before. Bugs will be fixed sooner or later, and you can download the version with all necessary updates without lags.
  • Check your antivirus. Some antiviruses have a negative attitude towards certain programs, which is why regular users go to the Internet, look for Skype problems in windows 7, due to which lags begin.

As you can see, you can deal with the problems that arise when working with Skype in windows 7 on your own. To do this, you do not need to call knowledgeable people or understand any subtleties: you just spend from a few minutes to half an hour of your time, after which you can again work with the familiar program without any inconvenience.

Skype won't start - empty window | Blog of the computer wizard!

"When you start Skype, there is no login and password input field"

This kind of garbage arises as always unexpectedly. It worked, Skype worked, and then bam (!) And an empty window at startup. Neither you enter a login nor a password, and even if it was launched automatically without asking for data, it is still an empty window.

So don't panic. For those who are worried about their contact list or messages on Skype, I can reassure you that they will not disappear (if you don't try hard).

What is the reason? As it turned out, the stable operation of new versions of Skype (starting from 5.5) depends on Internet Explorer (IE) and the windows Scripting Engine. Skype authorization requires JavaScript access and ActiveX execution. On some systems with certain IE settings, these tasks are not performed as expected, which is why Skype authorization problems appear.

What can be done in this situation? I will describe a few possible options... Here's one that worked for me personally:

  • Exit Skype (right-click on Skype in the tray> Exit). Make sure the skype.exe process is completely finished in windows Task Manager. If necessary, close the process if it is still active
  • Open the folder C: \ Program Files \ or C: \ Program Files (x86) \ (if you have a 64 bit system)
  • Find the Skype folder and the Phone folder in it
  • Right click on Skype.exe and select Send to Desktop (create a Skype shortcut on your desktop)
  • Now, right click on the shortcut you just created, go to Properties and select the Shortcut tab
  • The Target field will be "C: \ Program Files \ Skype \ Phone \ Skype.exe" (or (x86) if you have 64 bit windows)
  • Click with the mouse in this field. After the quotes on the right side, put a space and write / legacylogin
  • Now the text in the Target field will be "C: \ Program Files \ Skype \ Phone \ Skype.exe" / legacylogin
  • Click OK to save the settings. Start Skype with this shortcut

The / legacylogin switch should launch Skype through the old login window, which does not require IE components.

As for the global bug fix, here are the possible options:

1 - The problem is solved by running an earlier version of Skype - from 5.3. and earlier (logically from the above);

2 - Remove Skype, then START -> EXECUTE (enter the command) regsvr32 jscript.dll and click OK. A window will appear where we press OK again. Then again the START menu -> EXECUTE and enter the following command: regsvr32 vbscript.dll and click OK. After that, we install skype.

3 - Re-registering libraries for windows 7 64x:

a) Press START. b) In the search box, enter "command line". c) In the list of results, right-click " Command line"And select the" Run as administrator "command. d) type the following command and press Enter.

cd \ cd windows \ SysWOW64 regsvr32 vbscript.dll

Restart the system.

4 - You can try to update IE to the very latest version from using windows Update or uninstall IE and install it over again. Also, you can try to reset IE settings to factory (default). Or, on the contrary, roll back, for example, from version 9 to version 8.

5 - It may be necessary to combine these methods to achieve the result.

In general, good luck in bringing Skype back to normal.

Three powerful tips that can help if Skype doesn't work on XP

Interesting fact. According to a recent study, Skype has surpassed ICQ ICQ in popularity several times. And now an amazing fact. Problems with launching, installing and using the program remained at the same level. Users working on XP, even when there was no talk about windows 7 yet, faced the same problems that they still face. In addition to the fact that video and sound may not work, the program may simply refuse to work, so that even the authorization process becomes impossible to go through. So what if skype doesn't work on xp?

Personally, I think XP is an outdated, albeit well-proven, operating program. The problem is, which is also believed by most software vendors who create programs that can run exclusively on windows 7, 8, or at least Vista. It is for this reason that the recently updated version of Skype may refuse to work. Therefore, if you still have XP installed, you should use the old software. Any version of Skype will work as long as Microsoft has not bought out the rights to own the software.

By the way, updating to a newer version can also save the day. Microsoft developers do not eat their bread for nothing, so some software compatibility issues are resolved quickly enough.

Advice! If you want to return to old version Skype is not, you can try to launch it by changing the settings in the program.

Second advice. Change settings in companion programs

If you are using a version developed by Microsoft, especially after Skype 5.5, then the failure to work is most likely caused by the features introduced by the developers in the software. Namely, its bindings to Internet Explorer. To solve this problem, you can do the following:

  1. Close Internet Explorer and all explorer windows.
  2. Reopen it.
  3. Click on the Tools button. Located in the upper left corner and looks like a gear.
  4. Choose browser properties.
  5. Click in addition.
  6. Click on the reset button.
  7. In the window that appears, check the box next to the proposal to delete personal settings.
  8. We press the reset button, it is in the dialog box.
  9. After the program has completed the operation, click OK.
  10. We close the program.

After Internet launch Explorer again, all settings and changes will take effect. As a result, Skype should start. If this does not help, it's time to use the "heavy" artillery, namely, change the settings in the software.

Important! To run Skype, the latest version must be installed the corresponding Internet Explorer. Many problems can be solved simply by updating the existing IE.

Third advice. Change software settings in Skype

If the previous tip did not resolve the compatibility issue and Skype still refuses to work, you can set an exception to prevent it from being tied to Internet Explorer. This will require:

  1. Click on the Skype icon with the right mouse button.
  2. In the window that opens, select the Internet Properties tab.
  3. Now we are looking for a label for the column. It contains the address and the location where the boot file is located.
  4. At the end we add / legacylogin. Do not forget to put a space between the existing address and the new command.
  5. We save the changes by clicking the OK button.

What have we done. They simply gave a command to work offline Skype without using Internet Explorer.

There are usually three of the above steps: installing an old version of Skype or just a later one, changing the settings in the programs that are used, and also turning on the mode autonomous work IE helps 90% of the time.

Sometimes Skype crashes. It stops starting. As a variant of the bug - the appearance of a white field. Let's take a look at why Skype might not load on startup so you can fix the problem right away.

Bug reasons

Why won't Skype open on my computer? Skype does not work on a PC that does not have Internet Explorer installed, so this is one of the likely reasons. Moreover, the browser must be configured. All updates must be downloaded regularly, otherwise there will be a parameter conflict.

The error may be in the messenger itself. If it does not open at all, then most likely this is exactly the case. A white window that appears usually indicates the mentioned conflict with Internet Explorer.

Skype also cannot be opened if there is no internet connection. Check it out. If pages are loaded in browsers, then the problem is not a network outage. Restart the PC as well, as this may only be a single failure.

Method number 1

If the messenger does not turn on, first try deleting the shared.xml configuration file.

1. Shut down Skype. This can be done through the Task Manager. There is also an upward pointing arrow in the lower right corner. It is next to the clock and date. Click on it, and then on the Skype icon with the right mouse button. Click on the "Exit" item.

A window will appear asking, "Do you want to quit Skype?" Confirm the exit. You will not log out of your account, the program will just close.

2. In Start, we find the "Run" command. The same window can be opened using the Win + R command. In the line we write the following:% appdata% \ skype. Click on Enter.

4.Run Skype to see if the problem has been resolved.

Method number 2

Skype may not start due to a profile error.

1. Enter% appdata% again in the Run window.

2. Change the name of the Skype folder or simply delete it.

3.Try running the messenger. This method will delete your chat history and profile settings. The contact list, however, will remain untouched.

If Skype eventually loaded, then the problem was authorization.

Method number 3

If the second method didn't work and Skype still doesn't want to start, create a new shortcut to the program using the method below.

1. Complete the program using any method convenient for you described in the first method.

2.On the system drive C, open the Program Files folder, then the Skype and Phone folders.

3.Right click on the Skype file and then select Send - Desktop (create shortcut). A second Skype icon will appear on your desktop. Through it, now you will need to constantly open the messenger.

4.Call context menu this shortcut and select "Properties". The window that opens will contain the line "C: \ Program Files \ Skype \ Phone \ Skype.exe". In it, add the command: / legacylogin. Click on the "Apply" button.

5. Launch the messenger again through a new shortcut. The program will start in the old window of the Skype version, but Internet Explorer settings are not required.

Method number 4

This method is good when, instead of the usual blue Skype window, a white one appears. In most cases, this means that there is a conflict between Skype and Internet Explorer settings. As we said, the messenger is linked to the standard Windows browser.

  • Open Internet Explorer. To reset the settings in it, click on the gear icon and select "Browser options".
  • Go to the "Additional" block. Click on the "Reset" button. Check the "Delete personal settings" item and click on the "Reset" virtual key. What will be removed: Browsing history, vendor search, ActiveX Filtering data, home pages, anti-tracking protections.
  • Close all windows. Restart your computer and then turn on your browser for the changes to take effect. Now you need to see if Skype opens.

If it does not turn on when Windows starts

Previously, Skype opened when the PC was started, but now it has stopped? Let's solve the problem in several ways. Try, however, to start running it through the icon on the desktop. If it opens, then we take the following two tips into service:

  • Make sure the box next to Start Skype at Windows startup". You can find it in the "Settings" section in the first block " General settings". If there is a check mark, but Skype does not load, go to the second point.
  • Drag the Skype icon from the desktop to the Startup folder in Start.

What else can you do?

  1. Check your PC for viruses. Malicious software can cause the crash. Before scanning, make sure that the antivirus is updated to the latest version in order to use its databases to the maximum. Nevertheless, no antivirus can give a 100% guarantee of protection against viruses.
  2. Reinstall the drivers. Check out the updates for ActiveX, JavaScript and DirectX. Restart your PC and start Skype.

Technical failures on Skype servers are rare, but you shouldn't rule out this reason for failures either. In this case, a large number of users from all over the world face the problem, who immediately begin to write to the support service and to the forum of the official resource. Developers fix such problems rather quickly. They do not require user intervention.

If none of the presented methods helped, you will have to resort to the last resort - reinstalling Skype. Remove the program from the PC through the "Programs and Features" window, and then download the latest version from the official resource to exclude viruses from getting to the device.

If the browser pages do not open, the reason for the bug is not the absence of the Internet. Start applying the above methods. If all else fails, then reinstall the program.
