There is a famous road U. S. Highway 66 (or Route 66) in the States, more legendary than our E95 routes and the Georgian Military Road combined. Route 66 was sung in songs and used in brands, and now this iconic name is given to car GPS navigators entering our market. Nice attention to history road traffic... And what is behind it?

Design

For Americans, Route 66 is the mother of all American roads, the first highway to connect the mainland from the Pacific coast to the Atlantic, passing through eight states and three time zones. The Route 66 graphic is a stylized shield. This image can be seen both on the clothes of the famous Route 66 brand, and on the navigators of the Dutch company Route 66 Geographic Information.

Behind the shield of a modest GPS guide is the "family of fraternal peoples", which united: a Dutch manufacturer, American mythology, Swiss design, Chinese assembly, Hungarian navigation system iGO My way and maps of Russian cities. Moreover, they united in a compact form. Route 66 mini is a truly miniature car navigator with a 3.5-inch display that takes up almost the entire front of the device. Only in the upper right corner is the speakerphone microphone. Around the perimeter of the display there is a plastic frame, which, however, looks like a metal one. But the body is made of matte black plastic, which looks like matte black plastic.

Control

Navigator control is carried out using a touch screen. The developers spared 2 buttons - "Power on" and Reset, but they could also be turned into one. The display's sensitivity is average, it responds well to simple taps, but it is quite difficult to move the card across the screen with finger movements. The display has virtually no glare in the sun, and the image on it is perfectly visible in any light. Interestingly, Route 66 mini is equipped with two system connectors. The first is a completely standard miniUSB, the second is a system one, which works only in tandem with a special cradle (not included in the delivery set). This cradle is worth mentioning separately. By default, the navigator comes with a simple, standard holder, which provides for attachment with a suction cup to the windshield of the car. In this case, the algorithm for installing the navigator is as follows: first, you fix the navigator in the holder, then, rummaging in the glove compartment, you find the cord and insert it sequentially into the cigarette lighter and into the navigator. The handy cradle can be purchased separately. Its difference from the standard one is that the charger cord is connected directly to it, and not to the navigator. Thus, in the presence of a cradle, the "remove-put" operation is reduced to a simple installation of the navigator in the cradle, and the power is supplied automatically.

Cards

Route 66 mini has its own navigation system - Route 66 Navigate 8.0, built on the map-based company NavTeq. As a consequence of the foreign origin, on the map of Russia you can find only detailed maps of Moscow, St. Petersburg, several randomly selected towns of the Moscow and Leningrad regions, as well as the largest roads of the European part of the country. All other cities are marked with polygons resembling settlements within their administrative boundaries, with marked through passages. True, the browser of the online store is built into the navigator as a separate menu item - through it you can select, buy and download a map of the desired region: for example, one of the European countries. It is only necessary to connect the navigator to a computer with Internet access. Note to travelers: installing maps of other countries is still a problem for many car navigators sold in Russia. The maps are dated as early as the summer of 2007, so you will not find road junctions opened in the last year on them. Accordingly, the navigator will not lay routes through them.

Interface

Even a person who sees the navigator for the first time will intuitively understand the menu of the navigation system. A minimum of buttons is placed on the map itself: in fact, there are only buttons to zoom in and out, as well as to go to the menu. The transition from three-dimensional to two-dimensional mode of displaying maps is cleverly organized: just slide your finger across the screen and the map switches to two-dimensional mode. To switch back to 3D, press the button that appears in 2D. The navigator searches the entire database at once, which can both facilitate the process and confuse. It is enough to type in the name of the required street and house number, and the system itself will search its database and display a list of all addresses that match the query. For example, when requesting "Leninsky Prospekt, house 111", the device returned two addresses, in Moscow and St. Petersburg. After the destination is found, the navigator offers to choose the type of route: fast or short, by car or truck, or even on foot. The route is laid to the point on the road, opposite which, according to the navigator, the house you need is located - that is, you will have to look for the building “under the letter B, building 17”, for example, on your own.

Chips

From the list of bonuses, there is an item in the settings that allows you to select the speed for roads of different status: expressway, secondary highway, local road, etc. Thus, if you accidentally find a car with a special signal in your garage, you can set 200 km / h everywhere - then the navigator will calculate the super route without worrying about the speed limits of the roads. In addition to specific addresses, the database contains about ten thousand important objects for a motorist in Moscow and St. Petersburg (hotels, gas stations, shopping centers, etc.). Another additional feature is the ability to act as a Bluetooth translator to control the mobile phone and talk in hands-free mode. Contacts from the phone are transferred to the navigator, and to make a call, you just have to select the one you need from the list. And it is more convenient to dial a new number not on the phone itself, but with the help of large virtual buttons on the navigator, in fact, without being distracted from the road. There is also a built-in browser for viewing photos, which is required even for the most budget GPS-device. All JPEG files are his.

Navigate- a navigator for traveling on Android. It is possible to display a virtual car with recommendations for the driver on the choice of the travel route in many languages. There is a possibility of using offline mode cards. It is worth noting that Route66 + Navigation maps have three-dimensional images of large cities, in each of which you can see the weather for the near future, as well as get information from Wikipedia.

Route66 Mini Regional Navigator

ROUTE 66 Geographic Information Systems B.V was founded in 1992 in Holland. The head office is located in Amsterdam. The main activity of the company is the development of navigation software... The company owes its name to the legendary American road that stretches from Chicago to Los Angeles.

The first Route66 car navigation systems had a sonorous name - Chicago, and were intended purely for the European market. They served as the starting point for further GPS-navigators of the company - Route66 Mini and Maxi. One of them we are testing today - Route66 Mini Regional.

Route66 navigators traditionally install high-precision NAVTEQ geographic maps. Our prototype is no exception. It is equipped with the navigation software NAVTEQ (Q3-2008), which has maps of Eastern Europe and Russia (its European part). True, with some reservations. The maximum saturation of all roads is in Moscow and St. Petersburg. The road networks of the Moscow Region and the network of the main roads of the Leningrad Region are also detailed. If you need something else, then all this can be downloaded either from the manufacturer's website, or through the disk with the Route66 SYNC program, which comes with the navigator. True, this is already a paid service.

Appearance

The design of the navigator is very elegant - compact size, smooth rounded shapes, pleasant appearance. The edging of the screen is made to look like metal. All control takes place through pressing the touch screen. In addition to the screen, there is a charging indicator on the front of the navigator. When the indicator light is orange, the device is charging, while the green light indicates that charging is complete.

A built-in speaker for broadcasting voice commands, as well as music and soundtrack is located on the back of the navigator. There is also a slot for SD memory cards. Considering that the navigator has practically no built-in memory, all its information will be stored on a removable memory card. And its volume will determine how complete your navigation support will be.

At the very bottom are the car holder rails to attach the navigator to the car windshield.

On the top panel of the case, we see a positional switch on / off the navigator.

The connection connectors are located at the bottom end of the housing. The largest connector is for an optional car kit (sold separately). With its help, synchronization with a mobile phone and radio operation are carried out. Next to it is a RESET button and a mini-USB connector, which adds flexibility to the system.

Complete set and accessories

The Route66 Mini Regional is packaged in a white box with orange accents on the sides. It lists the main characteristics of the device.

The package includes the following:

  • GPS-navigator Route66 Mini Regional;
  • 512 MB SD memory card;
  • CD with software;
  • USB wire;
  • a wire for charging in a car;
  • hard car holder;
  • flexible car holder;
  • stickers with the manufacturer's logo;
  • set of instructions.

However, please note that in different regions the scope of delivery may slightly differ from the one described above.

On the disc you will find the Route66 Sync software to help you make backup the contents of the navigator's memory card, download updates or purchase the maps you need.

The navigator can be charged from the car's on-board cigarette lighter.

Using the USB cable, you can not only synchronize with a computer, but also recharge the navigator.

The rigid car holder is attached to the navigator using the sleds located on the back of the Route66 Mini Regional.

This structure is then connected to a flexible car mount.

And already everything together is solemnly fixed on the windshield of your car.

The flexible holder adheres quite tightly to the glass, practically eliminating the possibility of dropping the navigator on the go. But the fastening at the junction of both holders does not inspire much confidence. The navigator is quite easy to remove from the flexible holder, the plastic gaps do not fit snugly. Therefore, if you work intensively with the navigator, there is a small chance of dropping it. At the same time, the flexible holder will remain in place no matter what.

Optional accessories

Almost none of the manufacturers of navigators adds a carrying case to the package. Its absence can have a deplorable effect on appearance navigator, therefore, to extend the life of the navigator, you can purchase a branded wear-resistant case. However, the original cover on the manufacturer's website costs 29.99 euros, which is not so little.

The navigator claims the ability to make calls using the speakerphone, as well as the presence of an FM transmitter. Both of these features will only be available with the purchase of an optional car kit wireless communication, which has a built-in bluetooth module, whereby you can connect to the Internet to download new maps or updates to existing ones. However, these updates are often not free. And the wireless kit itself costs 49.99 euros.

Setting up the navigator

The first time you turn on your navigator, you will have to spend a few minutes setting it up. Be sure to insert the memory card into the slot before doing this.

The first thing the system will ask for is to select the interface language for further work with the device.

Entering the main menu of the application, you will see 13 icons:

  • Search;
  • navigation;
  • travel mode;
  • additional functions;
  • telephone;
  • photos;
  • scaling;
  • show;
  • transfer to;
  • save;
  • routes;
  • settings;
  • reference.

By selecting the "search" menu item, you can set a search for an object by name. Street names can be written both in Cyrillic and Latin. The numbers of the houses are visible, but with the buildings the situation is somewhat worse - they simply do not exist. At least in the version that came with the navigator, they were not displayed.

In addition, you can search for points of interest located near the object of your choice. Attractions can be hotels and theaters, as well as service stations.

In the "navigation" menu item, the search for the desired objects in common base data.

In the "travel mode" item, you can choose the most suitable navigation mode for the situation - walking, driving a car or truck. In addition, it is possible to set the shortest or fastest route.

"Additional functions" include viewing traffic information, analyzing weather conditions, choosing color schemes and voice commands.

Synchronization with a mobile phone is only possible with the purchase of an optional car kit.

Also, the navigator has the ability to view photos. The following file formats are supported - BMP, JPEG, JPEG 2000, GIF, PNG, PCX, TIFF, WMF, ICO, TGA. Photos can be copied, saved on a memory card, sent to friends, view their information. A slideshow view mode is also provided.

The scale of the map display can be selected in a wide range - from the "world map" mode to a detailed view of each street, where you can even see the difference between one- and two-way streets.

The "show" menu item provides the ability to switch to night mode, view the navigation diagram and statistics, as well as full information about the GPS itself.

The "transfer" menu item allows you to transfer your location and a description of the route itself to someone.

To create and use individual routes, the "routes" menu item is provided.

The "settings" menu is used to set the operating mode of the navigator.

Here you can change the interface language, adjust the volume of the voice guidance, select the map display mode. Here you can also set the speed limit. Upon reaching this milestone, the navigator will beep or display this number, or do both at the same time. It is also possible to set up an alert about approaching surveillance cameras or "favorite" objects.

The "help" menu item provides an opportunity to get some help in mastering the navigator itself.

General work impressions

Composing a route from point "A" to point "B" follows a completely logical scheme, but with some reservations. Often the program chose a shorter route, although that route could hardly be acceptable due to the condition of the road on which it was proposed to go. The lack of display of buildings' bodies is also upsetting. You can find the desired object by the street name and house number, but by the building number, alas, no. If for some reason we deviated from the route, the navigator immediately offered alternative transportation options. When entering an address on the Route66 Mini Regional screen, there is an opportunity to miss and press the adjacent letter, which slows down the interaction somewhat.

After setting a specific address to search for it on the map, you can then hover over it and the application will display its full name and coordinates. Information for some objects also contains phone numbers. If this is, say, a hotel, then you can call in advance and book a room. Agree, it's pretty convenient.

As mentioned above, the navigator supports a wide range of map display scales - from "world map" to detailed display of individual streets. At the same time, it is possible to clearly establish where there will be streets with asphalt surfaces, and where there will be country roads. You can also change the color scheme of their display.

Software

Synchronization of the navigator with the computer is carried out using the Route66 SYNC program, which must be installed from the disk.

In addition, for the navigator to fully work with the computer, the system asked to install Microsoft Activ Sync, and without it, it flatly refused to work.

When you start Route66 SYNC, it will ask you to connect your navigator to your computer.

The Route66 SYNC program menu consists of two main windows - Route66 Store and My Machine.

In the Route66 Store application, the user is given the opportunity to download new free updates to existing maps, voice commands, themes.

In addition, there is an opportunity to learn about traffic congestion by downloading information from cameras and photo-radars, however, such an opportunity exists only in the countries of the European Union (except for Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia), but this service is far from free.

For a small fee, you can also get a weather forecast for the next 15 days and download a guide with the main attractions of a particular area, with a driving plan and photos.

Among other things, detailed maps are available for download different countries... The prices here are also very different.

So, for a map of the European part of Russia you will have to pay 49.99 euros. For maps of Moscow or St. Petersburg, the program will ask for 9.99 euros.

In the window "My machine" the user can perform backup all the information on the memory card, as well as remove or add individual components, be it voices, themes or country maps.

conclusions

Judging by the navigator Route66 Mini Regional only by the convenience of the navigation system, then it is on the middle level. If we take the navigator as a whole, with all its additional features (FM modulator, mobile phone, viewing photos), then the assessment shifts somewhat. Activation of additional features requires separate material investments, which somewhat reduces the attractiveness of the navigator. Here each user decides for himself what is more important to him - the navigation system or additional "gadgets" that cost money are used quite rarely.

Pros of Route66 Mini Regional:

  • compact and elegant dimensions;
  • logical assignment of routes;
  • clear interface.

Cons of Route66 Mini Regional:

  • the close arrangement of letters when entering an address;
  • lack of building numbers during navigation;
  • poor performance of the built-in speaker;
  • very unreliable fastening of the hard holder;
  • additional features only available with the purchase of a car kit.
