To provide yourself with quick access to any file, folder or program, you can make a shortcut (link). Then you can start the program with one click of the mouse directly from the desktop, or open a folder or file. How do I set a shortcut to my desktop? Let's figure it out.

Create a shortcut in a straightforward way

Direct route means directly from the storage location desired file or folders.

  1. We find on our computer the folder we are interested in (document, program).
  2. Click on its image with the right mouse button.
  3. In the window that opens, select the "Create shortcut" menu item and click on it with the left mouse button.
  4. In the same folder (possibly next to the right document) a shortcut appears. It will look the same as the icon of the file itself, but with an arrow in the lower left corner of the new icon.
  5. Drag the created shortcut to the desktop.

How to create a shortcut in a workaround way

In this way, you can create a shortcut to a file or directly from the desktop.

There are several ways to "remember" your favorite sites on your computer. That is, you can make sure that the site you like can always be easily and quickly opened.

But there is another option. It is suitable for sites that you intend to open frequently. This method of "remembering" consists in the fact that you add to the Desktop, that is, to the screen of your computer, an icon that will open the desired site. We will now look at how this is done.

A way of remembering sites

Each site on the Internet has its own name. This is an Internet address where you can open it.

It is very easy to find out the name of the site - just look at the address bar of the browser, that is, at the top white line of your program for the Internet. It will contain different characters (usually English letters and punctuation marks). It is in this gibberish that the address of the site is hidden, which is open in this moment.

Now, using our site as an example, you will learn how to extract it. And then we will "bring" it into the computer, that is, we will make an icon on the Desktop.

Look at the top white line of the web program. It looks something like this:

These English letters and symbols in it - this is the site address. More precisely, this is the address of the site page that is currently open. The address itself is written in the middle:

As you can see, the address of our site is website

Now we will "bring" it into the computer, that is, we will create an icon that will open it. To do this, we take an ordinary piece of paper and an ordinary pen or pencil and carefully write it down letter by letter.

Or you can just select and copy this address. It is this part, not the whole.

Then we minimize the browser window.

Right-click on the Desktop (on the computer screen). A list like this will appear:

Hover the cursor over the "Create" item and select "Shortcut" from the additional list that appears, that is, click on it with the left button.

Approximately such a window will open.

We print in it three English letters w, and then the address that you wrote on a piece of paper.

Or you can just paste it if you copied it.

Perhaps some kind of list will pop up, like mine:

Ignore it, just click on the "Next" button:

Now you need to type a name for the icon that will appear on the Desktop. In the case of “remembering” our site, I chose the name “neumek”. I print it:

And now you need to click on the "Finish" button.

That's all! A new icon has appeared on the desktop.

Now, to open this site, you can simply open this icon.

The Internet has become an integral part of every computer, and browsers are the main tool for interacting with the world wide web. Every active Internet user has his own favorite sites, which he visits several times a day. Registering a website address several times daily is a procedure that takes a couple of seconds, but very annoying. You can add a page of interest to your bookmarks, but it runs the risk of getting lost there among dozens of similar sites. There is a much simpler and more convenient way - to bring the site shortcut to the desktop, and we will tell you how to do it.

Create a shortcut to the site on the desktop using the browser

Modern browsers have dozens of features that users don't even know about. In the browser, you can draw, type, play, read books, and watch movies. Naturally, browser developers made sure that users could create a shortcut to their favorite site on the desktop, and make it as simple as possible.

Google chrome

The most common browser is Google chrome that works great on computers of any size. It is very easy to create a shortcut to a site from Google Chrome:

Now when you double-click on the created shortcut, the browser will open with home page as a selected site.

Opera and Mozilla Firefox

The process of creating a desktop shortcut in Opera browsers and Mozilla Firefox practically no different from how it is done in Google Chrome. The only difference is the designation of the sign that you need to drag to bring the shortcut to the desktop. Whereas in the Google Chrome browser a potential shortcut is made in the form of a sheet of paper with a curled edge, in Opera and Mozilla it resembles a planet.

Create a shortcut to a site on the desktop using standard Windows features

The Windows operating system assumes the ability to create shortcuts on the desktop not only to access frequently used programs, but also to websites. The process of creating a shortcut to a site on the desktop is very simple:

It should be noted that the program in which the created shortcut will open will depend on which browser is assigned as "Default" on the computer. If you think that the site shortcut opens in the wrong browser, you should change the default web browser.

We remind you that the icon of the created shortcut can simply be changed. To do this, right-click on the shortcut and select "Properties". In the menu that opens, there will be an option to "Change Icon". It remains only to choose the option you like from the shortcuts offered by the system or set your own.

How to change the default browser in Windows 10

First of all, make sure that the browser that you want to set as the main one is on your computer. Next, you need to run simple instruction to change the default browser in Windows 10:

After that, the shortcut that was created above will start running in the selected browser. In addition, all links in word processing documents and other programs will open in the default browser.

For example, let's display the shortcut of the Word program on the desktop.

Press the Start button 1. Then move the cursor (without clicking the mouse buttons) over the All Programs menu 2. A list of programs installed on your computer opens. Follow the arrow to go to this list and hover the cursor over the folder you need - Microsoft Office 3 .

A list of programs included in Microsoft Office will open. Move the cursor to the program we need:

If you cannot find the program you need in the Windows Main Menu

But sometimes the main menu cannot be found the desired program(someone unintentionally or intentionally removed the shortcut). Do not despair, the matter is fixable. If the program is on the computer, then you need to find the launching file of the program and display a shortcut from it on the desktop.

For text editor Word is the way to go. Via Windows explorer or file manager Total Commander find the Program Files folder, in it - the Microsoft Office folder, then
open the OFFICE11 folder and find the WINWORD.exe file in it

On the found file, right-click the context menu, and then proceed
in a proven way. Do the same with any other program.
Find its folder in Program Files, then find the file that launches the program in the folder
(most often it has the .exe extension, but there are others). If you don't immediately understand which file is launching, double-click to try to launch it. If the program starts, then everything is correct, this is the main file. Display a shortcut from it on the desktop using the method,
shown above.

Note: You cannot delete anything in the Program Files folder with the Delete button. Otherwise, the program
which is in this folder will stop working!

How to rename a desktop icon

If the name assigned to the label Windows program, you do not like, for example, Shortcut for Word, you can change it.

To do this, hover the cursor over the shortcut (icon), right-click the context menu and select the item Rename... Immediately the text of the signature under the label is highlighted and you can delete the words "Label for", or completely rename the label. After that, be sure to press the Enter key - only then your name will be saved.

Paying attention that such actions (rename, delete) can be performed only with labels(they have a little black arrow in the lower left corner of the label). Files
programs located in their folders in Program Files cannot be renamed! Otherwise, they will stop working. You can only deduce shortcuts from them, but with shortcuts, do whatever you want!
