Video card AMD Radeon The HD 5700 Series will not work at full capacity unless you install the manufacturer's proprietary driver for it. This process is quite simple, however it can cause some confusion for users. Let's look at how to solve the problem using different methods, and you, as the reader, just have to choose the most convenient one.

The first 5700 series graphics cards from AMD began to be released a long time ago, and are no longer supported by the company. However, many people who still own this GPU model may still need installation information software. This question may arise as a result of reinstalling the OS or problems with current version drivers. Let's look at all the ways to find and install the necessary software.

Method 1: AMD Official Website

Downloading the driver through the manufacturer’s official Internet resource - best option for most users. Here you can find latest version driver and save it safely on your computer. Here are the download instructions:

  1. Clicking on the link above will take you to the downloads section. Find the block here "Selecting a driver manually" and indicate the information corresponding to the characteristics of your equipment and OS:
    • Step 1: Desktop Graphics;
    • Step 2: Radeon HD Series;
    • Step 3: Radeon HD 5xxx Series PCIe;
    • Step 4: Yours operating system and bit depth.
    • Step 5: Click the button "DISPLAY RESULTS".
  2. On the next page, check if the requirements meet yours and download the first file from the table called "Catalyst Software Suite".
  3. You need to run the downloaded installer, specify the unpacking path manually, or leave it as default by clicking "Install".
  4. Wait for it to finish.
  5. The Catalyst Installation Manager will launch. Here you can change the installation language or skip this step by clicking "Next".
  6. If desired, change the software installation folder.

    At the same stage, it is proposed to change the installation type. By default, “Fast” is selected, it’s better to leave it, and then you can go straight to next step our instructions. By choosing the second option, you will be able to independently select the components that do not need to be installed. AMD installs 4 files in total:

    • AMD display driver;
    • HDMI audio driver;
    • AMD Catalyst Control Center;
    • Dispatcher AMD installations(this checkbox cannot be unchecked).
  7. After selecting the installation type, click "Next" and wait for the PC configuration scan to complete.

    If the type was selected "Custom", uncheck the files that you do not need. Press again "Next".

  8. In the window license agreement with end user click "Accept".
  9. Now the installation will begin, you need to wait for the procedure to complete. It will be accompanied by the screen blinking; no additional actions need to be taken. Finally, restart your computer.

If for some reason this option is not suitable, move on to the next options.

Method 2: Proprietary utility for automatically detecting and installing drivers

A similar method for installing the driver is to use special program. It independently scans the video card model, finds and downloads the latest driver. You will also need to install the software.

This option is not much simpler than the first, since it is primarily intended for users who do not know the model of their video card or do not understand how to update to the latest driver version.

Method 3: Third Party Programs

An alternative method is programs designed to install drivers. Such software installs and updates drivers en masse, based on the computer configuration and software versions.

They are usually used by those who have just reinstalled Windows and do not want to download and then install drivers one by one. At the same time, there is also a custom installation that allows you to install only one driver - in our case for the AMD Radeon HD 5700 Series. One such program is DriverPack Solution - a convenient tool with the most extensive software database for PC components.

Method 4: Device ID

The computer recognizes each device not only by name, but also by its identifier. For the Radeon HD 5700 Series there is also a unique combination of symbols, with which you can find and download not only the latest driver version, but also any other previous one. This is extremely convenient if a certain version does not install or does not work correctly on your computer. The ID for the video card in question is as follows:

PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_68B8

Use it to find any driver version. And our instructions at the link below will help you find and install the software downloaded this way.

Method 5: Standard Windows OS tools

Not the most convenient, but relevant option is to work with Device Manager. It is not used very often, but it can help out when you don’t want to search and install everything manually. If the driver is successfully detected, the system utility will do most of the work for you. Read about this installation method in our separate article.

This article discussed 5 methods for installing a driver on an AMD Radeon HD 5700 Series video card. Each of them will be most convenient in different situations, be it a regular express installation, reinstalling Windows or manually searching for an old but stable version of the software.

Parade of Radeon HD 5700 family video cards from AMD's largest partners

Following the planned announcement schedule, on October 13, AMD officially introduced a new family of graphics Radeon cards HD 5700 (codenamed Juniper), designed to fill the mid-market segment. This family consists of the Radeon HD 5770 and Radeon HD 5750 models, which are the most affordable DirectX 11-compatible video cards with support for proprietary technologies ATI Eyefinity, ATI Stream, PowerPlay, 4-way CrossFireX, etc. Summary table prepared by our colleagues from Anandtech technical characteristics Radeon HD 5770, Radeon HD 5750 in comparison with the characteristics of the flagship video cards of the Cypress family, as well as with the previous generation AMD video cards is presented below:

The older Juniper model is built on a 40nm graphics core (1.04 billion transistors), containing 800 shader processors (SP), 40 texture units (TMU) and 16 rasterization units (ROP). The graphics memory subsystem is comprised of GDDR5 memory chips with a total capacity of 1 GB, integrated with the graphics processor via a 128-bit data exchange bus with a maximum bandwidth of 76.8 GB/s. The nominal frequencies of the Radeon HD 5770 graphics processor/memory chips are 850/1200 MHz (effective 4800 MHz); The recommended cost of the product is $159.

AMD Radeon HD 5770

The junior Radeon HD 5750 video card has more modest characteristics: the graphics processor consists of 720 shader processors (SP), 36 texture units (TMU), 16 rasterization units (ROP). Data exchange with the integrated 512 MB/1 GB of GDDR5 video memory occurs using a 128-bit bus with a slightly lower maximum bandwidth of 73.6 GB/s. The Radeon HD 5750 operates at 700/1150 MHz (4600 MHz effective) and has a lower MSRP of $109/129.

AMD Radeon HD 5750

In addition to impressive performance parameters, both models of the Radeon HD 5700 family have a high level of energy efficiency when operating in various modes: reference video cards consume only 16-18 W in idle mode, peak power consumption under load reaches 86-108 W. The expanded communication capabilities of the new products are characterized by the presence of the following set of interface outputs: 2 x DVI-D, HDMI and DisplayPort.

Some of AMD's closest partners have already presented their own versions of the Radeon HD 5770 and Radeon HD 5750 video cards: we published photo reviews of products from ASUS and GigaByte earlier. It's time to get acquainted with the developments of other market participants, vendors Club 3D, HIS, MSI, PowerColor, Sapphire, XFX:

According to our colleagues from Fudzilla, the first batch of graphics accelerators of the Radeon HD 5700 family prepared for distribution in continental Europe has already been sold out, and the US market also demonstrates high consumer demand for the presented video cards. We can only hope that AMD will be able to prevent a shortage of Radeon HD 5770 and Radeon HD 5750 video cards on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.

Juniper specifications based on this “hodgepodge”. When analyzing the data provided, it should be taken into account that these characteristics may change before the official announcement of new processors.

So, the HD 5750 chip, the reference video card of which is shown in the top picture, will operate at 700 MHz, and the HD 5770 chip will operate at 850 MHz (some sources report 825 MHz). GPU Radeon HD 5750 will have 720 universal processors, while the HD 5770 will have 800 of them.

Previously, there were rumors that the HD 5750 and HD 5770 would have identical memory frequencies, however, according to available data, the memory on video cards with the HD 5750 will operate at a frequency of 1150 MHz, while the memory of video cards on the HD 5770 will be 1200 MHz, that is 50 MHz faster. This is not a very serious difference, but nevertheless worth noting. In addition, the HD 5750 with 512MB of memory will appear in the future, but at the official announcement only versions of the HD 5750 and HD 5770 with 1024MB of GDDR5 memory will be presented. By the way, again according to rumors, the memory interface will be 128-bit, which can hardly be considered one of the advantages of future video cards.

The announcement is scheduled for October 13. According to some experts, the Radeon HD 5770 is almost as fast as the HD 4890 or GTX 260 from nVidia, and at the same time it will cost just over €130 in quantities of 100 pieces, which will cause some headaches for nVidia. Video cards based on the Radeon HD 5750 chip should fall within the range of €110 to €120 in a batch of 1000 pieces, but nothing is yet known about the performance of this chip.

In addition to the supposed characteristics of the new graphics chips, photographs of the Radeon HD 5770 and the results of its testing have appeared on the Internet. This video card is made based on the ATI reference design, its PCB somewhat shorter than that of the board, it has a 6-pin power connector. The board has 8 Hynix GDDR5 chips, the graphics core frequency is 850 MHz, the memory frequency is 1200 MHz. Connecting this video card to various devices possible via two DVI ports, as well as via HDMI and DisplayPort connectors.

When tested, the Asus Radeon HD 5770 video card achieved a result of P9103 in 3DMark Vantage, while the HD 4890 received P10312. The maximum temperature of the HD 5770 GPU reached 83°C, although the ambient temperature remained under wraps. In addition to the HD 5770, video cards based on chips, and, were tested for comparison.

Radeon HD 5770 test results

The high-profile appearance of the ATI Radeon HD 5870 video cards shifted attention from the most popular products priced under $200 to the top segment, but the company did not focus exclusively on it. Middle-income gamers will also not be left without new products: the Radeon HD 5700 series has gone on sale.

ATI Radeon HD 5800 graphics accelerators brought the Californian-Canadian developer an unconditional advantage in the top segment. But, despite the undeniable importance of image products, companies receive the greatest income from the sale of devices in the mid-price range. In it, AMD’s trump card will be a simplified variation of the Evergreen graphics architecture, codenamed Juniper, which is the basis for the Radeon HD 5770 and 5750 video cards.

Juniper, the younger brother of cypress

For the second generation of the Terascale graphics architecture, on which the Radeon HD 5800 and 5700 series GPUs are based, AMD chose code names based on the names of coniferous plants: the older series is built on the Cypress (cypress) core, the younger one on Juniper (juniper). At the same time, the company is deviating from this principle in the case of the upcoming two-chip Radeon video cards HD 5900 - it will be called Hemlock (hemlock, whose closest relative is carrot). However, let's leave the issue of fancy names and consider the technical aspects.

The Radeon HD 5700 line consists of two models, Radeon HD 5770 and HD 5750. GPUs Juniper, which forms the basis of these video cards, differ both in the number of activated functional blocks and in frequencies. Architecturally, they are exactly half of Cypress: the older chip contains 10 SIMD cores, providing a total of 800 shader processors and 40 texture units, and 16 rasterization devices. Quantitatively, these characteristics are identical to those inherent in the RV770 core - the “heart” of the Radeon HD 4870 and HD 4850, however new processor has larger cache sizes and expanded functionality: DirectX 11 is supported; a new anisotropic filtering algorithm that does not depend on the viewing angle; accelerated supersampling; HDMI 1.3 with support for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio output. ATI Eyefinity technology is also fully implemented. The only thing that has disappeared is the ability to calculate with double precision in GPGPU applications - advanced scientists will have to spend money on a video card from the top family.

The younger version of Juniper, Radeon HD 5750, is produced by rejecting chips of the older modification. It disables one SIMD core, so the GPU is equipped with 720 shader processors and 36 texture units. In addition, the core frequency has been reduced from 850 to 700 MHz. Otherwise, the characteristics of the video cards are the same: the memory bus is 128-bit wide, the video cards are equipped with GDDR5 RAM with a capacity of 1 GB for the older version and 1 GB or 512 MB for the younger version, the difference in frequencies is only 50 MHz.

The GPU is produced at the facilities of the Taiwanese semiconductor giant TSMC according to the 40-nanometer process technology and consists of 1.04 billion transistors. The maximum power consumption of video cards is stated at 108 and 86 W for the Radeon HD 5770 and HD 5750, respectively, the minimum is 18 and 16 W, which is significantly less than the previous generation. Power for both modifications is provided by a single six-pin socket (by the way, on the Radeon HD 5770 it is located close to the cooler casing and recessed, which makes disconnecting the connector a task for the patient).

The reference Radeon HD 5770 video cards are very similar to the Radeon HD 5800 series, have coolers of similar designs and colors and differ only in the length of the boards and the configuration of the power connectors. The cooling system of the younger model is simpler - a regular radiator with a fan on it. The set of interfaces for connecting output devices is identical: two DVI Dual-Link and one each HDMI and DisplayPort. End manufacturers have already presented their own modifications, mainly differing in frequencies and design of the CO.

The cooling systems of the new products are quite quiet and can be compared with models of previous generations equipped with modified coolers. Obviously, this was achieved by simplifying the heatsink configuration, since the fan on the reference Radeon HD 5770 is the same as that of the 5800 series. This, however, did not benefit the temperature regime: despite the “cold” 40nm process technology, under load the GPU heats up to 80-85 ° C, although this does not cause problems with stability.

There is intense competition ahead

Testing the new generation of ATI mid-class video cards confirms that the Canadian developer is trying to keep its promise to double the performance of its products in all market segments with the release of the next series of GPUs. Today, the direct competitors of these video cards, both in terms of performance and price, are the Radeon HD 4850-4890, but do not forget that these devices are top-end in their generation, and only the two-chip Radeon HD 4870 X2 is higher. If we look at market segments, then the former “mid-range” Radeon HD 4670 is simply incomparable with them. As for NVIDIA products, in its arsenal only ATI accelerators based on Juniper cores can compete GeForce GTX 260 216 SP, and in fact only with the Radeon HD 5770. A video card comparable to the Radeon HD 5750 from the American vendor on at the moment no: the GeForce GTS 250 is significantly inferior in performance and is predominantly competitive in games that actively use PhysX or are developed as part of The Way It's Meant To Be Played initiative. ATI plans to soon respond to the first technology with the open OpenPhysics initiative.

As already noted, the balance of power between new products and competing video cards greatly depends on the specific game engine. So, CryEngine is very demanding bandwidth memory, and there, at least twice as wide buses on products of previous generations from both vendors significantly help them. At the same time, balanced games positively respond to innovations in Juniper, allowing new products to get ahead by 10-25% compared to the Radeon HD 4800 family. NVIDIA video cards, then in terms of performance the GeForce GTX 260 is closest to the Radeon HD 5770, while the Radeon HD 5750 is almost on a par with the GeForce GTS 250. It is also worth considering that at the moment only the second (or rather, only the first public) version of the driver is available for the Radeon HD 5800/5700 family, and in its new releases the performance situation may improve significantly.

In addition, in the rivalry between two vendors, in addition to speed, there are other factors. Thus, the production volumes of Juniper chips will only grow, which will reduce the cost of both the GPU (the 40-nanometer process technology itself is cheaper than the 55-nanometer one) and ready-made cards(the shortage, which currently has caused greatly inflated retail prices for new items, will disappear). At the same time, according to some reports, NVIDIA GT200b chips will soon be discontinued, which will concentrate on the future Fermi architecture. AMD now has room for maneuver in a possible price fight, but NVIDIA does not have it - in case of a reduction in price latest models A competitor's company will either have to sell scarce products at a loss or simply ignore this inequality.

To summarize, we can say that the ATI Radeon HD 5700 family turned out to be successful: it is noticeably faster than the previous generation video cards, has the same cost and has a set of functions that those simply do not have. At the same time, the new products have the potential to become cheaper, unlike the corresponding NVIDIA models. Thus, AMD takes the lead not only in the high-end segment, but also in the mid-price range.
