It's just around the corner, and the era Android Nougat is slowly approaching the end. Fewer than 10% of the world's devices have firmware installed today, but Google is set to release the next Android 8.0 this fall. In this article we will tell you about all the updates from the first Android 7.0 to Android 7.1.2, about its features, capabilities and new features.

What's new in Android 7.1.2

Last thing Android update 7.1.2 for smartphones google Pixel and the supported Nexus family were announced back on January 31, 2017. The devices began to be updated already in March-April. The least update affected Pixels, as they already have all the most advanced chips installed. But the "Nexuses" got this opportunity only from 7.1.2. First of all, we are talking about support for gestures on the fingerprint scanner. Now, in order to lower the shutter, you need to swipe down on the scanner - how convenient it is, of course, you decide. The function can be turned on or off in the settings (it is not turned on by default).

The most significant change in functionality with Android 7.1.2 came for Pixel C, which inherited Pixel Launcher from a smartphone and got a completely new multitasking experience. Now, in the task manager on the Pixel C tablet, applications are displayed in a grid, and not in the form of more familiar cards.

In addition, as many as 8 shortcuts are now displayed in the menu of running applications, which is convenient. As before, they are flipped with swipes. The Pixel C also gets new navigation buttons like the Pixel phones, and a swipe from the bottom of the screen opens the bottom shutter with all installed apps.

The new Android 7.1.2 software also allowed some (but not all) users to choose which screen to set their live wallpaper on. Devices that do not support Pixel technology can install the Wallpaper application to replicate the wallpaper setting functionality of the Pixel, which contains many beautiful wallpapers and a choice of whether to install the wallpaper on the work slot, lock screen, or both.

What's new in Android 7.1.1

As before, the 7.1 operating systems on Pixel and Nexus are slightly different. For example, Nexus smartphones did not inherit the beautiful new Pixel Launcher, although they did voice assistant Google (Update Feb 26).

The most significant features of this update are the quick launch shortcuts. You just need to make a long tap on the stock camera application in order to choose right on the desktop: take a photo or start recording a video, without first launching the application itself. This will greatly improve the user experience. Instead of five quick settings in the shutter, now there are as many as six switches, and if you hold down the power button, you will find in the menu what we have been missing for so long - the reset button.

Several changes have also been made to Settings, including the addition of a smart storage manager with automatic and manual cleaning options, and the addition of a Move section where various gestures and motion detection functions are toggled live. Support for sending GIFs also appeared early on in Google Keyboard.

How split screen works in Android N

The Nougat version finally brings split-screen mode to Android devices. Here's how it all works. The Split Screen data display function works in both portrait and landscape modes, while the two windows can only be changed in portrait mode. App developers can set their own minimum app height, but in landscape mode you can only be content with a 50/50 ratio.

Multi-window mode can be activated by long-pressing the app and dragging it to the top of the screen. This first app will appear in the top window (or on the left if you're in landscape mode), and you can immediately select the second app to appear at the bottom (right) automatically. Alternatively, when the second window displays the application selection window, press Home to launch the application from the main screen or from the lower curtain.

The app on top (or on the left in landscape mode) is the main window, the second app on the bottom is secondary, and it is this one that can be easily changed to another. So if you are going to turn on two programs at once, place a higher priority on top, which you will not have to close or turn off soon.

What is Fast App Switching and how to use it

In short, fast program switching is switching between the two most recently launched applications. The feature works system-wide, so you can quickly switch when you are in a full-screen application, and you can also use it in a secondary window in split-screen mode.

Just double-tap the "app overview" button and you switch between the last two programs in the second window. (The same gesture applies to switching between full screen apps, sometimes it doesn't work in split display mode.)

Fast switching is one of the coolest Android Nougat features. With her help, we you can use three applications at once: two in multi-window mode and one more will swap with the bottom app for maximum performance.

New and improved notifications

The notification shade in Android 7.0-7.1.2 has received minor cosmetic improvements. Now it fits the philosophy of a flat interface as much as possible and has become a little wider. You get more information and less wasted space, as well as more structured notifications. And the "Attached Notifications" and "Quick Reply" features are so obvious and so useful that it is surprising that they have not yet appeared in earlier versions of Android.

There are three types of Nougat notifications:

  • compact lock screen
  • a little more informative presentation of notification shades
  • and an expanded view with Quick Actions, which you access by swiping over the notification or clicking at the top of the notification itself.

Quick Reply is a convenient way to reply to a message directly from its notification without having to completely open the application. We have already seen something similar in. This is a fantastic feature that will save you tons of time and endless app switching.

Another quick action goes beyond a simple answer: you can also share, delete, and archive them directly from the notification. These features make Nougat's notification shade much more active and responsive. Unfortunately, until now, not all applications support this function, all claims are made to the developers.

What is System UI Tuner

System UI Tuner Are essentially additional professional settings for some of the chips in a smartphone. For those of you who prefer a "sliding scale" to set the importance of app notifications from the developer preview, you can easily enable this in the System UI Tuner.

To add System UI Tuner to the settings menu, simply press and hold the gear icon in quick settings until it spins and your device vibrates. You will now find it at the bottom of the Settings menu. System UI Tuner also contains a switch for split screen layout and switches for which icons are visible in the status bar. There are also some settings for the Do Not Disturb option in the UI Tuner.

Quick settings

The quick settings in Android Nougat have also been updated. For starters, you will always have handy list of six switches (5 switches in Android 7.0) at the top of the notification screen. You can edit the order of the settings in the curtain and select only the most important shortcuts. The small arrow on the right side of the screen will take you to full page quick settings, which you can also access with the familiar swipe gesture with two fingers from the top of the screen down.

You now have several shortcut options in the quick settings menu. Some of them instantly turn an option on or off (for example, Flashlight, Do Not Disturb, and Location). Other shortcuts such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, when pressed, open an additional menu, right in quick settings (for example, connection selection). A long tap on the shortcut will take you to the full settings menu.

In the list of quick settings, you can click the "Edit" button in the lower right corner to reorder the shortcuts or replace them with others. The list of additional options is small: Google Cast, Data Saver, Invert Colors and Hotspot. But developers can now create custom quick settings for their apps, which will definitely improve the smartphone experience.

How Doze Mode Works

Back in the first preliminary Android version Nougat (Dev Preview) for developers, long pressing the battery icon instantly took you to the full battery settings section. In the final version of Android 7.0 (7.1.2), this also remains.

Doze mode now works not only when the device remains stationary for a while, but when it is in motion. True, your smartphone screen should be off, but now you can save battery power while your phone is not in use. It's too early to tell how much better Doze performs better in Nougat compared to Android 6.0 Marshmallow, but it's cool that such a useful feature remains on the system.

The whole point of this mode is that the phone, left in your pocket or bag when you are on the move, will disable network access and only periodically synchronize data... And if your device is completely motionless for a while, the system activates an even deeper "sleep phase" without synchronizing and pinging GPS or Wi-Fi. Thus, the battery charge remains as long as possible.

Data Saver

Data Saver is not just another powerful feature of Android Nougat firmware that takes control of the traffic usage of applications on your smartphone. Function Data Saver allows you to deny Internet access to background applications when you are connected to a cellular network. A reminder of this mode will be shown at the top of the display. You can whitelist any important applications that will not be affected by the restriction.

Vulkan, Java 8 and OpenJDK support

Android Nougat firmware officially adds Vulkan API support, which promises faster, smoother, and better rendering of game graphics. The Vulkan protocol comes from the same people who are responsible for OpenGL.

Game developers can simply opt for the higher performance and complexity of Vulkan, or stick to the simpler, less intensive OpenGL standard. It's a win-win for gamers and developers alike, even if it takes some time to distribute Vulkan.

Android N also supports Java 8, which is more useful for developers than users. In short, it allows developers to work better with code. Nougat also installs the transition from Java API to OpenJDK.

Our article will introduce and help everyone who wants to try out the advantages of Android 7.0 and 7.1. The official release of Android 7.0 (codename - Nougat) took place on August 22, 2016, the new OS became available for Nexus and Pixel smartphones, and in this moment the wobbly roll reaches other devices around the world.

How quickly time flies - you hardly have time to follow the updates. And, of course, someone could easily miss the release of Android Nougat.

It is not enough to install a new OS, because you still have to figure it out and get acquainted with new features. Here are some practical recommendations that will help you learn more about many of the features of the new version of Android, without leaving the checkout.

Please note that everything written here applies to Android 7.0 and 7.1 on Google devices. Many smartphone manufacturers change the operating system in their own way, adding features and changing the interface. So on some gadgets, menu items and names may be different or even absent.

How to quickly switch between open applications in Android 7

On Android Nougat, switching between apps has become much easier: double-click the Recent Apps button (the square to the right of the Home button) to navigate between the two most recently opened apps (sort of like the Alt + Tab keyboard shortcut on a PC).

Speaking of this button, in the seventh version it received a new function: open any application, press and hold it, or press it once. Recently opened applications will be displayed, select the one you need and drag it to the top of the screen. This is how split-screen mode is activated, in which two open applications take up half of the screen. To return to normal viewing mode, press and hold the "Recent Applications" button again.

How to copy text

Need to copy text from one application and paste into another? Let's do it in multi-window mode. Select the desired text, then click on it, hold and drag it to another window. If the application itself supports this feature, the text will be inserted automatically.

Little known fact: using the above mode, you can view two browser tabs at the same time, for example, Chrome. Open a new tab in Chrome, press and hold the "Recent Applications" button and click on the three dots icon (top right corner of the screen). We are looking for the option “Move to another window”.

And one more trick associated with our now favorite button. Some may already be aware that you can remove applications from recently launched ones by dragging and dropping them to the left or right of the screen. The new version of Android has an option complete cleaning the list of recently closed applications (at one time, many third-party smartphone manufacturers introduced such an option in their versions of Android). Scroll to the very beginning of the list and find it.

Home button on Android 7.1 will show the most frequent actions

On an Android 7.1 device, press and hold the Home button. The screen displays the most frequently used functions in different applications, for example, calling your favorite contact in the Phone application or opening a new tab in Chrome. (For those who have Android 7.1, but nothing works, you can use the Google Start launcher.)

Quick jump to settings

Need a quick jump through system settings? Nougat has a quick navigation menu. To find it, click on the three horizontal lines icon in the upper left corner.

For those who have a blockage in the "Applications" section: you can quickly scroll through the list by sliding your finger down the right edge of the screen. The fast scrolling interface will appear.

How to set up and what can be seen in the quick settings panel of Android 7

The quick settings panel on Nougat has undergone several subtle but important innovations. First, if you swipe down from the top of the screen, several shortcuts will appear for quick access to various parameters, such as, and "Airplane mode". Also, each comes with a switch for quickly turning on and off a particular function.

If, while on the main screen, swipe from top to bottom twice or with two fingers, an expanded list of available tools will open, where when you click on any of the icons, additional settings (if they are available for the selected function) will open.

In all sections of the quick settings panel, a long press on any of the icons takes you to the corresponding system settings window.

The quick settings toolbar is fully customizable. Open the panel and click on the "Change" button, which should be in the lower right corner or on the pencil in the upper right part of the screen. This option allows you to move, add and remove icons from the panel.

The settings of the first six icons from the quick settings panel will be displayed if you call up a short view of the so-called "curtain" (swipe down on the main screen once).

Mode "at work"

If you use the gadget at work, look for the "At work" item in the quick settings panel. It switches between a user's work profile, where settings and applications are set for work purposes, and a personal one with custom applications.

You can add additional tools to the quick settings panel using third party applications... For example, using Weather Quick Settings, you can add a small weather tile, and Ringer Modes will allow you to change the sound mode of the gadget with one touch.

Night mode on Android 7

Android 7.1 supports the new Night Mode, which is only available on select models. If you're lucky, you'll find the "Night Mode" feature in the quick settings panel. It makes it easier to read the screen at night.

In addition, you can make this feature automatically turn on when needed. In the "Settings" menu, open the "Screen" section, look for "Night mode", click on the "Turn on automatically" label and select the option either "In the dark" or "Custom schedule". (It's easy to guess that this setting will only be on the device with "Night mode").

Android 7 notifications

Notifications in the seventh version of the mobile OS are divided by application, so if you received, say, three new messages in your Gmail mail, a notification about this will be displayed in its block on the notification panel. Clicking on the notification opens a mini-block with more detailed information that can be expanded to provide quick access to notification-related options (for example, send to archive or reply to a message).

Is an application sending notifications too often? Click and hold any of its notifications (or slightly shift it to the right or left and click on the gear that appears). From here, we can mute all subsequent notifications or turn them off altogether.

Android's "Do Not Disturb" mode has received a new useful feature on Nougat: you can set silent mode for the whole night, and in the morning, when the alarm goes off, it will turn itself off. To activate this option, go to "Settings", then - "Sounds and vibration", find the item "Do not disturb", select "Automatic rules". Add a new rule, click on the "Time" line and enter any name. We set the days and times when the gadget will be in silent mode... In the "Do not disturb" section, either "Alarm only" or "Important only" should be selected, also do not forget to enable the option "The next signal overrides the current stop time".

Additional functions

Stop squinting! Especially for those with vision problems, Nougat has a zoom option. Going to the "Screen", we are looking for the option "Image scale on the screen".

Want to make the words bigger, but keep everything else the same? For this, in the "Screen" section there is a line "Font size".

If you need to reduce the amount of Internet traffic consumed, Nougat has a new Traffic Saving Mode, which limits the amount of outgoing and incoming mobile data for an individual application (both in the background and in the active mode). We head to the "Settings" and go to the section "Data transmission" and click on the item "Saving traffic".

Multiple system languages for Android

Are you fluent in two or three languages? On Android 7.0 and 7.1, it is possible to install several system languages and switch between them without any problems. Going to the section "Language and input" in system settings, click on the "Languages" item, where we can add new languages to the list.

Medical card in the phone

For emergencies, a kind of medical record was added to the seventh version of Android, which, among other things, indicates contacts for communication in case of an emergency (they will be displayed on the locked screen) and a blood group. To enter this data, in the settings menu, click on the "Users" item and see the line "Data for emergency cases."

Now you can change the voice of the system in such a way that it will growl or squeak (it's fun to listen to both). We go to "Settings", then - "Special. Opportunities "and click on the" Speech synthesis "option, where we can set the pitch of the voice.

Have you ever had one earpiece in your ear, but you want to hear the sound of both channels? In this case, in the section "Special. Features ”there is an option“ Mono sound ”.

Hidden functionality Android 7

Those who need to walk through smartphone memory, move or copy files should definitely try out the improved file manager. Opening the "settings", go to the section "", at the very bottom we find the option "Explorer". This is the file manager.

Want to experiment? We go to the quick settings panel, long-press on the gear icon in the upper right corner of the screen, unlock the hidden parameters of the System UI Tuner. After that, a new line "System UI Tuner" should appear in the settings menu at the very end of the list. Various user settings await their time here, for example, the appearance of the status bar and the management of different types of notifications.

The most popular alternative firmwares for Android CyanogenMod have become unavailable. For example, for Samsung Galaxy Nexus S I have not been able to download CyanogenMod firmware 11 from CyanogenMod's official website (had to). Fortunately, the LineageOS community is continuing the CyanogenMod business, bringing new Android firmwares to a multitude of users.

Once again, I am convinced that it is better to choose one of the most popular smartphones, around which there will be a community of developers. The LG G Flex2 LS996 turned out to be an unfortunate choice. the manufacturer didn't even update the firmware to Android 6 (although some variants of the LG G Flex2 did get the update). For the same reason, I would avoid Chinese smartphones.

But the 5-year-old Samsung Galaxy SIII (AT&T i747, d2att) turned out to be a very good choice. Apple iPhone 4s was purchased at the same time as this smartphone. For a while, the products of the apple company pleased much more due to the presence latest updates... But the last iOS version began to slow down too much, and then even appear for this phone.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 (AT&T i747, d2att) boasts the official LineageOS 14.1 firmware, even if it's nightly builds for now, and not firmwares classified as stable.

Agree with the warning by selecting Continue (press the volume up button) A green robot should appear on the screen with the words "Downloading ... Do not turn off target !!"

  4. cd ~ / Downloads

  5. heimdall flash --RECOVERY twrp-3.1.0-0-d2att.img --no-reboot
where twrp-3.1.0-0-d2att.img is the name of the file with the downloaded TWRP image. According to the instructions on LineageOS, a bar should appear on the phone showing the progress of the installation. My screen on my phone hasn't changed, so I just waited feedback in the terminal. If an error occurs with insufficient privileges, in Ubuntu, the command must be run with sudo.

Wait for the operation to complete

  6. After installing TWRP, disconnect the USB cable from the phone and turn off the power (I removed the battery).

  7. In the TWRP Recovery environment, select Wipe, check Cache, System, Data and clear them.

    adb push open_gapps-arm-7.1-nano-20170410.zip / sdcard /

  10. In my case, the partition on the phone was encrypted, so after installing the firmware, there was a problem with decryption, despite the correct input of the picture password. As a result, the data had to be formatted.

  11. Return to the main menu by pressing the Back button.

  12. Click on Install and select the firmware from the / sdcard / folder. Add archive with GApps and any others additional packages... For example, you can add root using LineageOS su add-on (I did without root solely for the sake of security and the inability to use some banking applications with root). You can also add packages for getting weather forecast data: YahooWeatherProvider, OpenWeatherMapWeatherProvider, WundergroundWeatherProvider.

  13. After the installation is complete, return to the main menu and select Reboot -> System.

  14. Profit!

Update (September 24, 2018)
Lineage OS is not happy with official updates for d2att (AT&T i747), although firmwares are present for other Galaxy s3 variants. I had to install the firmware from MoKee, which is updated regularly.

How to install Android 7.1 Nougat (MoKee Open Source 14.1) firmware for Samsung Galaxy SIII (AT&T i747, d2att)

Caution: When flashing Samsung phone Galaxy s3 (d2att) can always go wrong. Please also note that the instructions are written for the AT&T Galaxy s3, so it can only be used for this version of the smartphone.

twrp-3.2.3-0-d2att.img is the name of the file with the downloaded TWRP image. According to the instructions on LineageOS, a bar should appear on the phone showing the progress of the installation. My screen on my phone did not change (the inscription "Downloading ... Do not turn off target !!) remained, so I just waited for feedback in the terminal.

If an error occurs with insufficient privileges, in Ubuntu, the command must be run with sudo.

  19. After the installation is complete, return to the main menu and select "Reboot" -> "System".

  20. After rebooting, set up your phone, including entering the login and password from your Google account (if you installed GApps, of course).

  21. Profit!

If after flashing everything works, but the phone does not see the SIM card, then you need to flash a new bootloader and modem. Similarly, download ZIP archives on your phone and flash using TWRP or ClockworkMod. Versions N and M of the bootloader and modem are suitable, with older versions the phone may not find the cellular network. After flashing, it is advisable to clear the cache and Dalvik cache.
Please note that returns to old version bootloader or firmware can turn the phone into a brick, but modems, apparently, can be installed in different versions.

On August 27, Google released new version its mobile operating system. And now, on October 12, the corporation presented to the developers Android 7.1... It is with this OS that the recently announced Google smartphones will be released.

According to the developers, developers will be able to download the operating system at the end of October. Owners of nexus from Huawei will be able to install it - and. Also available to Pixel C tablet owners.

What's new in Android 7.1

As of mid-October, relatively little is known about the update of the new android. However, as follows from the information provided by Google, the update will not bring major innovations. Most of the code changes are compensatory: buggy fixes and performance improvements.

Changes and innovations

It is known that in Android 7.1 changes will affect the keyboard. Some additional features and interaction improvements. The operating system will now provide desktop wallpaper metadata and circular icons will appear.

But the biggest innovation will be the built-in program. Storage Manager Intent... SMI is an application whose functionality will be to remove unnecessary files... At the moment, Android users use third-party programs for these purposes.

But the most unexpected feature that will be added in 7.1 is the ability to create shortcuts for specific application actions. That is, it will be possible to create an icon, by tap on which it will open, for example, a section with messages in social network or a camera in the Instagram application. Most likely, when creating this feature, the developers were inspired by 3D Touch, which can be used by owners of iPhone 6s and older models. It is not yet clear how such a solution will take root.

When Android 7.1 comes out

Android 7.1 for developers will be released at the end of October, and the final release will take place in December. Updates will be received by users of the latest Nexuses, as well as owners of those phones whose manufacturing companies wish to update their OS to the latest version.

Recently, Google presented to the general public the latest version of its mobile operating system Android Nougat (7.0). The final assembly has many key changes and additions in its arsenal, designed to direct all efforts towards optimization and ease of management with the system. Out of habit, the manufacturer gave the next numbered platform the sweet name "Nougat", which is a sweet confection of nuts and chocolate.

At the moment, the seventh assembly of the android system is supported by the following devices:

  • Nexus 5X;
  • Nexus 6;
  • Nexus 6P;
  • Nexus 9;
  • Nexus Player;
  • Pixel C laptop;
  • General Mobile 4G (Android One).

Testing and refinement of the system has been going on since March 2016. At this time, the very first test images of the system appeared, which could only be installed on the Nexus line of smartphones and tablets. The pre-release beta version was released in July, and was already ready for the final revision. Key improvements and innovations will be indicated and described in the following lines of the article.

In order to expand the functionality and distribute the user workflow, the developers from Google provided the system to work simultaneously in two windows. This analogy has moved to the mobile OS from the desktop, where it is a key option for organizing the workflow. Here, everything is limited to only two windows, in which the feeling of multitasking is created. The user can simultaneously view navigation maps and sit in the messenger, watch Youtube and read the news feed on Twitter, as well as many other examples of use. In order to get into this mode, you need to hold down the multitasking key.

Doze

The improved and advanced energy efficiency system is now called Doze. Thanks to well-thought-out processes for monitoring the operation of the OS, the system itself determines when the device is actively involved, when it is in rest mode, and decides which work option to use.
