In the zone of armed conflicts

Armed conflicts on Russian territory still do not subside. The most difficult situation is in the North Caucasus. The civilian population is also actively drawn into armed conflicts. Overt acts of terrorism, murder, robbery, looting in conflict zones, rapid, uncontrolled weapons civilian population– all this creates the preconditions for local conflicts to escalate into large-scale actions, the destructive consequences of which are difficult to predict. The problem of hostages, refugees and internally displaced persons has become acute. in these difficult conditions, people’s lack of basic knowledge and survival skills in zones of military conflicts led to unjustified casualties.

The book contains the basic knowledge of human self-rescue in various extreme situations. After reading the book, you will learn how to properly give a distress signal, what you can do and what you absolutely cannot do, how to navigate the terrain, what and who you can eat, how to use the most ordinary things and save presence of mind in the most seemingly hopeless circumstances. The book will help you not only survive, but also save others.

From the introduction: “A forced landing or landing (splashdown) with a parachute after an airplane accident can occur in a deserted area, far from populated areas. Wherever an accident occurs, search planes and helicopters will immediately come to your aid. If, due to some circumstances, you find yourself in conditions of autonomous existence for some time, REMEMBER: a favorable outcome depends on you, on your ability to survive. To survive means to act actively, purposefully, using emergency equipment and available means, skillfully applying knowledge and experience to protect against the effects of adverse environmental factors (high and low air temperatures, wind, solar radiation), obtaining water and food, etc. . Finding yourself in a deserted area, before making any decision, first calm down, collect your thoughts and evaluate the current situation. REMEMBER everything you know about surviving in such conditions.”

The textbook systematizes the basic rules, norms, patterns and methods of ensuring life safety in conditions of autonomous human survival in nature.
The textbook is compiled on the basis of a large amount of theoretical and practical material developed by a group of special forces veterans, combatants, psychologists who study the impact of extreme situations on humans, teachers of educational institutions of higher and secondary vocational education and secondary school teachers. It is intended for students studying the organization of human security in emergency situations, specialists from law enforcement agencies and rescue workers, as well as for residents of our country living in remote regions and in areas at risk of being in an autonomous state due to extreme natural conditions. The material presented in the textbook can be useful to athletes, forestry and fishery workers and all those who are interested in forestry.
The publication is fundamental for the training of security specialists, bachelors in the Life Safety profile, cadets and students of all higher educational institutions of law enforcement agencies.

After reading this interesting guide, you will be able to navigate and behave correctly both in anomalous zones and during moments of exposure to anomalous phenomena.
The amazing and mysterious can be both majestic and attractive, and deadly dangerous. The purpose of this book is to teach how to survive not just in difficult conditions, but in abnormally difficult ones.

The textbook addresses the issues of teaching students to survive in conditions of forced autonomous existence in the natural environment. The situations of autonomous human existence in the natural environment are systematized. The necessary recommendations for organizing actions, ensuring the life of a person (group) in various extreme situations, and methodological recommendations for teaching the necessary skills and abilities are given. Since tourism helps to feel the impact of all natural factors on human activity, prepare him for independent actions and develop the necessary skills for this, the manual pays special attention to the issues of organizing and conducting tourist trips.
For students of pedagogical universities. It will be useful for students of tourism and other universities, as well as teachers of general and additional education children.

In the book, the reader will find the answer to any question regarding the preparation and implementation of both a simple tourist trip and a complex, dangerous journey.
In addition, it describes the features of movement and survival in various climatic zones, seas and oceans, and describes plants and animals that pose a danger to humans. It also contains extensive information about the provision of medical care in case of illnesses and accidents, from which, unfortunately, no traveler is insured.
Separate chapters are devoted to the features of mountain, water, cycling and skiing.

Our time has given rise to many books about how a person can survive. How to make a fire in the taiga “without nothing,” build a shelter, find water and food, how to navigate and where to go - this knowledge has become the property of many, although most of us will never need it. But how to find warmth, food, lodging for the night in a remote and unexplored city without money, how to move and travel - this case has practically not been examined by anyone.

Our time has given rise to a certain special fear of man before the world, a mistrust of people towards each other. In the old days, man was afraid of nature, but, having become the conqueror of nature, he began to fear himself. People look at each other and at the whole world through a keyhole. Open your doors and hearts and you will succeed.
Survival is the ability to stay alive. All items of equipment that you have should be disassembled only as a head start, which may not exist. You must know how to take everything possible from nature and exploit it one hundred percent, how to attract attention to yourself so that rescuers can find you, how to move through unfamiliar territory towards civilization (if there is no hope of deliverance from the outside) without a map and compass . It is your responsibility to know how to stay in great physical shape or heal yourself and others if you are sick or injured. You must be able to maintain a strong strong spiritual state, both in yourself and in others who share with you the adversity of the situation.
This collection of books is not for those who, sitting in front of the TV, philosophize: “I really like to travel, but I have never traveled.” This work is for practical people. Only those who have already had a similar practice will be able to truly appreciate the experience collected here, as well as add their own, perhaps more advanced, methods to the methods described.

Legendary traveler and survivalist Bear Grylls shared with us the secrets of survival in the wild. But he didn’t let me take a bite of the bear’s liver. Even in exchange for a squirrel.

Text: Oleg “Orange” Bocharov
Illustrations: Sergey Radionov

Imagine: a plane crashes into the jungle, you are the last surviving passenger, you need to overcome three hundred impassable kilometers to the nearest Internet cafe in order to send a tweet “I’m alive!” and die. Although no, plane crashes are rare, let’s take a more realistic option: your yacht crashed on the rocks in the Gobi Desert, and the only food here is sand and cholera bacilli. What are your chances of survival? Chuck Norris of the 21st century - British traveler Bear Grylls assures that they are great.

When you watch a Discovery Channel show about extreme survival (there is no other way to call it), Bear Grylls seems like a magician. It looks something like this: “In front of you is the corpse of a penguin that I found in the mouth of a volcano. It is slightly burnt, but the fur is still beautiful. Look, just a couple of strokes of the knife - use only a boiled knife! - and the dead penguin turns into an excellent warm sheepskin coat with a zipper and a hood.”

But it should be recognized that Bear’s advice is basically simple, and the concept of survival comes down to three understandable theses: protection, provision, salvation.

Bear now proves the realism of survival techniques with the most obvious of possible ways: seeks out real stories of miraculous rescues and reconstructs them. Yes, in front of the camera, but honestly, without cheating. If any Peruvian who escaped from captivity ate only hummingbird eggs and spent the night in snake holes, rest assured: new program“Bear Grylls: Get Out Alive” Bear will do exactly the same throughout the entire journey.

And yet, MAXIM magazine does not exist to retell TV shows (you can see them yourself). Our mission is to steal the most valuable experience from Grylls and give it to you.

Protection

So, you woke up in the middle of Siberia, the Amazon or the Sahara. Your thought... no, not “I want to eat and drink” and not “Take me away from here.” Do you want to live? The number one goal is to protect yourself from cold, sun, water, wildlife and injury.

There are no single recipes for all cases of attacks by snakes, tigers, scorpions and sharks. This is bad news. There is good news too. It turns out that wild animals almost never climb into tents where people live and sleep, so if you manage to build not just a tent, but a full-fledged shelter with a roof and walls, you don’t have to wait for guests. The exception is bears, who strive to climb into a tent, but only if food is stored there: they can smell an ordinary apple or a basket of raspberries from afar. Therefore, it is clear that food should be kept only outside, and the farther from the camp, the better.

The picture shows a diagram of a simple construction of a hut based on a lying tree (we found this and other architectural projects in Grylls’ book “Life in the Wild”). Only this type of construction does not require ropes, much less nails; all you need is a fallen trunk lying approximately one meter above the ground, as well as branches and grass for the roof.

By the way, the more extensively you build your camp, the greater the chance that it will be discovered by rescuers. But we will return to this later.

Of the natural shelters from bad weather and animals, the most reliable are caves and overhanging cliffs. Caves are not nearly as cozy as we think from cartoons about cavemen - most of them are disgustingly damp, cold and dark. You can’t just light a fire there either: the cave will be filled with smoke and the neighbors will have to call “01”, but it will be too late. Bear Grylls points out that caves with bats are especially dangerous: their droppings are contagious and cause histoplasmosis (fever, cough and death-death-death). You can sleep under a cliff relatively calmly, but first feel the soil: if it’s dry, then the rain won’t reach you. It’s a pity, but it is precisely under such cliffs that there is often a very unpleasant draft (due to the Venturi effect), so you need to either wrap yourself up or fence yourself off with walls.

When you wake up in the morning, shake your clothes thoroughly before moving on, as snakes or insects may have crawled into them. By the way, many small creatures actually do not want to meet a person and attack only if you bump into them.

Therefore, in regions with an abundance of snakes, it is better to move with maximum noise so that they have time to crawl away.

This may sound strange as advice to a dying tourist after a crash, but you should keep yourself clean. Dirt on the body and sweaty clothes accumulate bacteria and insects, which are often no better than a plane crash. We do not encourage you to shave once a day, but from time to time, bathing, washing clothes and cleaning your shoes is a definite plus in the karma of a survivor.

If your shoes have rubbed a callus, do not rip off the sore - let it remain as it is. But try not to get blisters at all. If you wipe your feet with alcohol (it makes the skin rough) and put moss in your shoes, you can prevent calluses.

The temperature inside your body should not fall below 28.8 °C and rise above 42.7 °C*, otherwise death. And death is bad.

*- Note from a warthog named Phacochoerus Funtik: « By the way, do you know how a person knows at what temperature he will die, how long he will last without water, food, air? No, this is not a computer prediction. During World War II, the Japanese created a top-secret experimental camp of Unit 731 in Manchuria, where inhumane experiments were carried out on captured Chinese, Mongols and Russians. This is where most of these statistics come from. »

DIY forecast

█ The best misfortune is a predicted misfortune. If the sky is red in the evening, it means that the rays pass through dust raised by high pressure. High pressure (warm dry air) does not promise storms, the weather will be fine.
█ But if the sky is red in the morning, then the area of high pressure has moved towards the sun, to the east, it will soon be replaced by low pressure, and with it rain, melancholy and sadness will most likely come.
█ Rain is also foreshadowed by a halo around the luminaries (moon and sun): high clouds contain ice crystals. And cirrus clouds portend the same thing. Surprisingly, a rainbow can also be useful: if it is on the windward side, then the rain is moving in your direction.

Or a hearth made of two stones.

An ordinary person, even someone as smart and beautiful as you, loses more than three liters of water per day (urination, sweating and breathing). What’s even worse is that in the cold, water is just as necessary as in a hot desert: in the cold, a person urinates much more often, since the body does not want to waste energy on heating the excess fluid in your bladder. And your body is right in this case. Bear Grylls insistently tells everyone: you need to drink before you start to feel thirsty.

The following figure shows a diagram of a simple earthen drainage basin, about a meter in diameter. The pit is covered with plastic film (you press it to the ground with stones), in the center of which a load is placed. Moisture, rising from the ground, accumulates on the film below and flows into a helpfully placed glass.

If you are lucky enough to find a natural source of water, be extremely careful to boil it anyway. In the book “Life in the Wild,” Grylls describes a case when a guy drank water from a crystal clear mountain stream and after that became disabled. He had no idea that a hundred meters upstream in this stream lay the corpse of a sheep.

Let's say you're the unluckiest person in the world and all you have at your disposal are dirty puddles and goat's hooves of water. But what is it? You are no longer the unluckiest person in the world, because you found an old issue of MAXIM in your pocket and read these lines in it: “Build an improvised three-layer filter. Place a layer of fine sand at the bottom of the bag, put a layer of small pebbles on top, and large stones on top. After passing through these three layers, the filtered water flows into the container placed below. Add syrup and gas to taste.”

Salvation

Rescue involves two goals: moving in the right direction and sending distress signals.

The arsenal of ways to notify rescuers is scarce and has not changed for the last hundreds of years. Bonfires with thick black smoke, sunbeams, posting inscriptions and notes in bottles. They say that in good weather, the smoke from a powerful fire can be visible 50 kilometers away. A night fire can be seen from the air 20 kilometers away. But did you know that officially three fires located in a triangle at a distance of 10–20 meters from each other are considered a distress signal? This way the helicopter pilot will understand that you are really in distress, and not having fun grilling moss kebabs in the tundra to the sounds of the Vladimir Central. Keep several unlit fires ready, as well as a torch, which you can quickly use to set them on fire.

Ditch the portable camping church from your luggage and grab a dozen compasses. If you don’t find any, remember where the North Star is, pointing to the north, or, if you are in the Southern Hemisphere, find the Southern Cross and mentally make its lower crossbar six times longer - there will be a landmark to the south.

The last thing you might need is calculating distances. There is Naismith's rule: in an hour a person walks about 5 kilometers, the time will increase by 30 minutes for every 300 meters of ascent. Let’s say the length of the path is 15 kilometers, 500 meters of which are uphill. This means you will spend 4 hours on the road.

A well-known anomaly: moving from landmark to landmark is easier for a traveler than stupid, purposeful movement forward. Just remember that your eye is a big deceiver. Any object seems closer if the day is very sunny or if you are standing below it, and also when all the objects around the object are small. In poor lighting, the landmark, on the contrary, seems more distant.

Well, you survived. Having covered half a thousand kilometers, you returned home, where your wife is waiting for you with a rolling pin and the question “Where have you been?” And here we already need other survival skills, which we already write about every month. But all to no avail.
