It looks like I am a book of fairy tales, a package of delicate soufflés, coffee beans, a turntable, a fitness bracelet, eye patches and a dinosaur. That's right, but I'm also the package! My most cherished dream is to collect all my parts, because this is the only way I can get into my future home.
Stage I. The goods go to the logistics center, where they are assembled into an order
Usually no one remembers their birthday, but not me. At first I was gone, and then bam: and a soufflé, a book, a fitness bracelet, a turntable, coffee, eye patches and a toy dinosaur gathered in a basket on the site to become me - a package.
My parcel companions and I agreed to meet in the blue basket of the sorter when he starts collecting us at the logistics center. We are lucky: we will all go in the same package-box, but it also happens in a different way.
Sometimes parcels for one order are formed in different warehouses. Depends on which warehouse the goods are stored in. After all, it is almost impossible to collect more than ten million goods in one place - well, except perhaps to rent a small city for this! For example, you can order a kettle and an air mattress. The kettle will go from Tver, and the mattress from the Moscow region. In this case, you will receive two different parcel boxes. Everything in order to deliver the order as quickly as possible, albeit in parts. There are two deliveries, but one order - that is, you pay once. Of course, unless you decide that you definitely need a delicate soufflé and coffee beans for breakfast, and the rest later.
It all starts with the fact that all-all goods are brought to the logistics center. Here they are accepted, marked in a special way - so as not to lose either the soufflé or the dinosaur on tens of thousands of square meters, then the pickers begin to arrange them in the necessary sections and shelves. It is there that goods are waiting for their finest hour. More precisely, the moment when someone adds them to the cart on the website or in the Ozon app and orders.
At least seven people and two smart machines with complex IT under the hood are involved in the formation of an order, from assembly to delivery (for their smooth operation, a whole IT System for Warehouse Inventory Management and Warehouse Logistics was developed). From people - the receiver of goods, picker, consolidator, sorter, packer, storekeeper and loader. From machines - super sorter and automatic packing. The picker places goods on the shelves when they arrive at the warehouse, and the consolidator uses an intelligent system to assign the sorter which items need to be collected for which orders in one section. Ask, where, in the end, are the robots? Of course, the process is automated (read below about smart systems). But Ozon has 24 product categories and sells everything from pencil to cabinet. And robots that can handle both small wooden spoons and a 70-inch TV have not yet been invented. Therefore, while people are taking the rap for them.
The logistics center is really just huge: its area is 24 hectares, it's like a small urban-type settlement somewhere in the Moscow region, only if it had four more floors (don't even try to imagine). Such an anthill, where everyone is constantly busy with something and moves with the speed of lightning. Moreover, the center works without holidays and weekends. All in order for everyone to receive their parcels as quickly as possible.
Finally, the sorter gathered us with the guys (remember, this is a book of fairy tales, soufflé, coffee beans, turntable, fitness bracelet, eye patches and a dinosaur) in a blue basket and took us to a large cabinet with cells.
Each sorter is responsible for specific sections of the logistics factory. The area of responsibility can change, it is determined by the smart Ozon system. The sorter has several orders (on average per shift - superheroes would be jealous - he collects 3836 goods). The program tells him to take, for example, a smartphone, iron, notebook and sneakers. He puts them in a blue basket, in which they will continue to travel along smart tape for packaging. There they are met by another sorter, who puts the goods into bins (one bin - one order). From there they are already taken by the packer. This is how the package is formed!
Stage II. Goods end up in the hands of the packers
We fell into the hands of the packer. She began to quickly-quickly collect the box, put us there. Whack-whack, whack-whack, a little scotch, turned it over, marked it, turned it over again. And now I am already a real package, and I am driving along the conveyor belt. Some kind of holiday, like New Year... You wait, wait for it, get ready, then two or three minutes (yes, no more!) And that's it - a new life!
Packers see "prompts" on the screen: a smart program tells what size and shape packaging is best to take for a particular order, depending on the number of items in the order and their size.
I was in a great mood. And nothing separated me from my cherished goal of becoming a mega-parcel - a super sorter.
Stage III. Parcels pass the last measurements and turn into a mega-parcel
The super sorter was nobly called Vanderland (that red one, on the gif just below). It really was like a wonderland, almost like a Hogwarts distribution hat. In a couple of seconds, he accurately determined the weight of the parcels, understood which city each should go to, and sent them to the necessary storekeepers-packers. It can handle as many as 100,000 parcels per day!
- If only not to Siberia, please! It's so chilly there! - I whispered in hope, driving inside the mighty distributor.

Fuh, carried away. Not the south, of course, but not bad either.
The distributor, or Vanderland, as its employees affectionately call it, is a machine that determines the dimensions and reads the markings of the parcels, and then decides which sorting center and city they will go to. Parcels travel along the tape, magnets knock them into special compartments, depending on the city of delivery. A "mega-package" is formed from the parcels on pallets - the boxes-orders are fastened to each other and in this form are loaded into a truck.
I'll tell you this: high technology is power and strength. Well, what kind of person will understand on which pallets you need to add parcels, and where to subtract them? His head will boil and break! But Vanderland understands (and remembers!) What parcels each storekeeper has and can give him more orders, if suddenly there is space left on the pallet in the “mega parcel”.
Stage IV. Mega-parcels are sent to the delivery service
All parcels are assembled. The storekeeper began to fold us, so skillfully that I was stunned. Not a single millimeter left idle. This is how mega-parcels are “built”! While we were being laid out in places, I thought that I was alone quite recently, and now there are solid like-minded people around me. No, the box with the TV is not related to me, but we have one goal - to please the addressee.
We waited for everyone to settle down, then the loader waved his hand at us and closed the doors of the truck. Finally we go to the sorting center. A little more and I will find myself where they really love and wait for me!
Stage V. Parcels from sorting centers are delivered to addressees
My home is in Moscow. First, along with other parcels, I was brought to the metropolitan sorting center. If a parcel is waiting for a trip across Russia, for example, to the harsh Chelyabinsk, then first it goes to the regional logistics center and from there my fellow travelers will either be taken to the pick-up points and checkpoints or personally picked up by a courier, like me.
