920 aroused maximum interest among users of the global telephone network. The device with a diagonal body of 5.8 inches has embodied all the current innovations, trends and technologies of the modern market. No wonder the popularity of the Lumia 920 phone was in no way inferior to the flagships of brands such as Samsung and NTS.

General characteristics

The 920th model differs primarily in performance. Responsible for this property is the Qualcomm S4 series chipset with two 1.5 GHz cores. The characteristic of the integrated memory strip also belongs to the advantages of the Lumia 920. Its volume is as much as 32 GB. The standard RAM, as in all new Nokia devices, is 1 GB.

The diagonal of the screen is 4.5 inches. There is an increased sensitivity and the presence in the configuration of a special protective glass... The camera boasts fast autofocus and optics. Surprisingly, the Lumia 920 is characterized by video stream shooting. The owner of the phone will be able to shoot in FullHD without loss of quality.

The smartphone supports over 20 interfaces wireless communication in a wide frequency range. It is worth noting the presence of multilingualism in the software part.

External characteristics

The dimensions of the case are 13 by 7.1 cm. The thickness of the device is just over 10 mm. Weight varies by case and accessories. Clean - about 185 g. Based on the characteristics described above, we can conclude that the device is more suitable for men, since it is rather massive and heavy.

Of the main design features, it is worth highlighting the convex screen, which protrudes slightly above the body level. True, in previous models it was much more striking.

The back panel is represented by a matte lid. This is also one of the advantages, as in the 900th version of the flagship the surface was glossy. There were stains and fingerprints on it, and in hot or humid weather the device slid noticeably in the hand.

The body feels like it's made of cheap plastic. Control buttons (volume, power and camera) are located on the right side. It is very convenient for many users, especially for left-handers. The headphone jack, like the built-in microphone, is located at the top of the body. The disadvantage of the device is the inconvenience of inserting a micro-SIM card. For this procedure, you will need a needle or a thin paper clip, which is included in the basic kit. This innovation of the developers of "Nokia" causes only bewilderment.

At the bottom of the device there is a connector for micro-USB and speakers. Under the display on the front panel there is a proprietary Windows button representing the company logo.

Screen features

The new Nokia device supports a display resolution of 768 by 1280 pixels. This is the first model that has departed from the usual 480 × 800. The Lumia 920 has a rather large and comfortable screen. Its diagonal is 11.5 cm (4.5 inches).

The front surface of the display is a smooth glass plate. Its main function is to protect against minor scratches. An anti-glare filter is also built into the screen, which noticeably reduces the brightness of the projections of reflected objects. The outer surface has a special coating with an oleophobic film to prevent fingerprints from appearing on the display. Thanks to her, you can quickly remove any stains.

Manual brightness control allows you to obtain optimal performance from 62 to 380 cd / sq. m. As a result, you can read the text from the screen without any problems both in the daytime and at night. It is noteworthy that instead of the traditional brightness slider, the 920 model has a banal three-point regulator built in: maximum, medium and minimum. But the auto-light setting on the sensor works perfectly. This is the optimal solution for users who cannot quickly navigate the appropriate brightness level in a particular environment.

The display of the device is made on the basis of an IPS-matrix. Thanks to this technology, it has large display angles without any picture inversion and color shift. It is worth highlighting the high contrast ratio - 665: 1. In turn, the color gamut is in no way inferior to the famous sRGB technology. When testing, there was no significant deviation of the black body from the spectrum. Color balance error at minimum.

Performance metrics

The Lumia 920 is pleased with the characteristics of frequency processing of operations. The device is powered by a Qualcomm S4 processor. The dual-core chipset has a total frequency of 3 GHz. This is a major leap forward for Nokia developers. Suffice it to recall that the 900th model of the smartphone in its arsenal had only one core with 1.4 GHz.

The S4 processor is based on two platforms - Adreno 225 and Krait. It is worth noting support for LTE and the lack of HDMI and MHL connectivity. Nevertheless, the smartphone fully copes with the main performance tasks: the interface does not slow down, the FullHD video stream is reproduced without distortion.

Unfortunately, there are still no serious games under Windows OS, but the supported ones run even at the maximum requirements without lags.

Operating system

In Lumia 920, the firmware is no different from previous Nokia flagships. This is the standard Windows Phone "axis". The only advantage of the platform is that the operating system is represented by the new version of Eight. However, in the Lumia 920, the Windows P8 does not yet justify itself. "Axis" can not please with anything advanced, if only with a couple of new gadgets, utilities and shells. In addition, the software for WP8 on this moment it is extremely difficult to find.

Lovers of colorful multimedia will note the changing tiles of the main menu. Now gadgets can be customized not only in size, but also in shape: from a large rectangle to a miniature square. In general, the OS interface is accessible and simple. Owners of the updated WP7 will not see any special differences from the new version.

Almost the only feature of the "axis" is the absence of an application menu arrow on the desktop. Now, to access the list of programs, you need to swipe the screen 1 time to the left. But it became possible to update the system by wireless network and overwriting files using the usual explorer manager.

Features of the interface

When you turn on the device, the first thing to do is display a lock window, which displays notifications about the current weather, time, date and messages in social networks... Desktop tiles remain informative. Of the minuses, it is worth noting the fact that not all start-up gadgets can be removed from the screen.

The search box only works with an Internet connection, as the built-in browser opens immediately. Lumia 920 firmware includes a number of standard applications: Microsoft Office, drivers, Internet Explorer, banking utilities, Skype, and a couple of banal games. It is noteworthy that in WP8 office suite turned out to be very weak. Its functionality is limited to changing the content of the text and saving the document in basic formats only.

When connected to the Internet, only the built-in IE browser works correctly. There are no complaints about the rest of the applications.

Benefits of navigation

Nokia developers have always paid special attention to location capabilities. Navigation takes navigation to the next level in the 920 with the WP8 platform. Now the user can download maps of any city directly over Wi-Fi. Communication with the application is carried out by voice. The navigator automatically announces the details of the selected route and analyzes the current movement on the highways, helping to avoid traffic jams. It is noteworthy that after the implementation of the search, the application can work offline.

Lumia 920 maps contain information not only about traffic, but also about the location of objects, about metro stops, tram routes, trolley buses, etc. The picture can be displayed in 2D, 3D and satellite in a small scale.

It is important that the list of available maps also includes Russian cities.

Camera specifications

When developing the optical part of the device, Nokia engineers decided to return to the standard of the past. Despite the fact that the camera was built on the basis of PureView technology, the resolution does not exceed 8.7 megapixels. This is strange, because according to the same technique, the optics had 41 MP in the arsenal.

The only thing that pleases in the Lumia 920 is the characteristic The pictures are of perfect quality even in foggy weather at night. When developing the camera, a BSI matrix was used, which not only suppresses noise, but also has an increased reverse light sensitivity. Integrated and color saturation also stand out.

Autonomous work

The Lumia 920 battery is a non-removable Li-Ion battery. The capacity is about 2000 mAh.

With an average performance load, the operating time of the device varies within 2 days. In this case, the brightness should be in automatic mode. It is worth noting that Wi-Fi and text managers do not drain the battery much, as in many other smartphones.

In passive mode, the battery can hold a charge for up to 3 days. With a high load on multimedia, the battery lasts for 12-14 hours. Interestingly, there is a battery saving option in the settings that turns off the multitasking mode and unnecessary utilities of the Lumia 920.

Smartphone Nokia Lumia 920 has become the most popular device of the Finnish company over the past two years. Flagship status, freshest Windows version Phone 8, as well as unique chips in the form of wireless charging and a smart camera go with a bang. At least that's what Nokia says. But how much does the Lumia 920 actually meet the expectations of the power user? You can find the answer in our test review.

Despite the loud statements about the worldwide expansion of Windows Phone, there are still not many devices on this operating system. However, vendors keep trying. This is especially true of Nokia, for which this platform has become the only one. Here is the last novelty of the Finns, the Lumia 920 smartphone - one of the first devices running Windows Phone 8, announced less than six months ago.

Bigger display, molded polycarbonate body, great camera, high performance and speed - it's all about it. Technology geeks will appreciate wireless smartphone charging and the ability to use the touchscreen while wearing gloves, while photography enthusiasts should appreciate the photographic capabilities. Let's try to figure it out, too.

Dimensions. Contents of delivery

id = "sub0">

Even during the announcement on the Web, they actively discussed the dimensions and weight of the Lumia 920. I can confirm that the device is quite large and heavy, but it does not look like anything unusual. At least it did not cause discomfort to me. I was much more surprised at the low weight of the iPhone 5.

Returning to the "lumiya", I note that the device does not look thick or somehow massive. The dimensions are 130.3x 70.8x10.7 mm, and the weight is 185 grams. The weight of the device is evenly distributed over the area. Thanks to this, the device does not tend to slip out of the hands.

The delivery set includes:

  • Nokia Lumia 920 Smartphone
  • USB charger adapter
  • Interface cable miniUSB-connector CA-185CD
  • Color-matched stereo headset WH-208
  • Latch to open the micro-SIM compartment

Design, construction

id = "sub1">

In terms of design, the Nokia Lumia 920 looks luxurious. Smartphone on store shelves will clearly stand out for its appearance, elegance and minimalism compared to other devices. The upper and lower ends are straight, which allows the device to stand steadily, for example, on a table. The side edges are rounded, so the smartphone fits comfortably in the hand. Well, the case itself is entirely made of polycarbonate. You will not find seams and joints here. This makes it possible to achieve high radio transparency as well as abrasion resistance and relatively high impact resistance. This construction is also called unibody.

Meanwhile, the exterior of the Lumia 920 is not new. The Finnish company's previous WP models such as Nokia and.

It will be important to say that the novelty comes in four colors: yellow, red, white and black. I had a yellow sample at my disposal. Devices in yellow, red and white are made of glossy plastic, black - matte with soft-touch effect. Each of the colors looks advantageous in its own way.

As for the placement of individual elements and nodes of the smartphone, then on the front you can see the speaker for voice calls. Nearby there is a position sensor (G-sensor), a digital compass, a proximity sensor, a light sensor. On the right there is front-camera, with which you can make video calls or take pictures of yourself. The resolution of the camera is 1280x960 pixels, which corresponds to 1.3 megapixels. The video, by the way, turns out to be of a very adequate quality.

Most of the front face of the smartphone is a 4.5-inch touchscreen. Surprisingly, it doesn't get so dirty that you wouldn't do it with it.

The display itself, the area with the camera module above it and the area with the sensor block below are covered with scratch-resistant toughened Gorilla Glass 2. The glass is literally half a millimeter raised relative to the body surface.

There are three touch buttons controls: "Back", "Windows" ("Home") and "Search".

The volume rocker is located on the right side edge. Just below there is an on / off button and a screen lock, and even below there is a camera key. The connector for connecting an interface cable and a microUSB charger is located at the bottom end. Here you can also see the speakers for playing external sounds and ringtones. At the top, there is a compartment for a SIM card in the Micro-SIM format, a hole for connecting a 3.5 mm headset, as well as a microphone.

The built-in speaker has excellent volume headroom. In most cases, you can hear it well. It will be impossible to miss a call, even if you are in a noisy place.

On the back there is a steel insert with the Nokia logo, as well as a built-in 8.7 megapixel camera lens with autofocus and an LED flash. There is no memory card slot here. Memory only built-in 32 GB plus SkyDrive cloud storage service.

The build quality of the test device was not so bad. The back creaked. It is possible that this was due to the increased use of the test model. For the sake of experiment, I went to three stores and specifically looked at a dozen models in different colors. I did not find any squeak or assembly defects in them. The Lumia 920 is assembled at the company's factory in China.

Graphic capabilities

id = "sub2">

The Lumia 920 uses a 4.5-inch PureMotion HD + touchscreen with a 768-by-1280-pixel IPS panel (15: 9 aspect ratio). The display shows 16.7 million colors. Well, the PureMotion HD + technology itself makes even fast scrolling of content clear and smooth at the same time, improves the quality of the displayed picture of dynamic scenes in films or the use of the display as a camera viewfinder, and also makes the screen responsive to user touches.

Thanks to the G-sensor (accelerometer), the screen can automatically change its orientation. The display is protected by durable Gorrila Glass 2. As practice shows, it successfully prevents scratches during smartphone operation.

The screen has good color reproduction, brightness, contrast and viewing angles. The brightness of the backlight is adjusted automatically, but at the same time there is a manual adjustment. The display fades in the sun, but all information is well readable.

As noted earlier, the picture changes its position depending on the location: vertical or horizontal. But this does not happen in all programs and applications.

Of the chips, it is worth noting the Super Sensitive Screen technology. It is used to control the device not only by touching the fingers, but also with nails, stylus, etc. The degree of sensitivity can be selected in the menu, if you do not want the screen to respond to any touch, this can be turned off. In the pocket, the screen cannot react to touches, the proximity sensor is responsible for this, you shouldn't worry about that.

Thanks to Super Sensitive Screen technology, the smartphone can be operated even with gloves. This is very important for our winter! True, to use it you need to practice a little and get used to it. Navigating through the menu, launching applications, making calls - all this worked without problems in our case. Checked for yourself!

Keypad and information input

id = "sub3">

As noted earlier, the Nokia 920 has three touch-sensitive buttons for Back, Windows and Search. The rest of the control is carried out through the touch screen. In this case, you will not find keys for receiving and rejecting a call. You can only accept or reject a call using the touchscreen display. This is implemented quite simply and intuitively.

Typing is done using the on-screen QWERTY keyboard. It is quite comfortable even in portrait orientation of the display - and all this is the merit of the large screen.

In general, you can enter text in several ways: using the QWERTY keyboard in a horizontal or vertical layout. To dial a special character, just press the "& 123" button. To switch the layout from English to Russian, there is a dedicated "ENU" or "RU" key to the right of the space bar.

Interface and navigation. Functionality

id = "sub4">

Nokia Lumia 920 is running latest version operating system Windows Phone 8 from Microsoft. In the future, it will be possible to update it via the Internet to newer versions.

Among the innovations of the new OS, it is worth noting the appearance on the lock screen of the weather, large clocks, notifications, as well as "live applications", for example, Facebook - photos, statuses are shown, depending on how you configure these very live applications.

As for the user interface of the smartphone, everything is standard here. The desktop is presented as a scrollable vertical column of squares and rectangles, so-called tiles, displaying functions, messages and program icons. A tile can be a shortcut to a specific application, or a link to a person from a contact list, to a photo, to a web page or service. The sizes of the tiles can be changed. Up to four icons can fit in one line.

You can set a separate page on the desktop as a tile. If you like, say, to read news from Yandex or Kommersant, then you can go directly to the last read page by clicking on its shortcut on the desktop without launching a browser or digging up a log entry. Alas, the user does not have the ability to change and decorate the desktop with various pictures. The background here is purely black or white! You can only change the color of the design or the lock picture. That's all!

At first, I was surprised by the absence of indicators at the top of the screen showing the signal strength, battery status and similar system notifications. But after digging around, I found them. To display, you just need to click on the top of the screen and that's it, they will appear automatically.

If you try to swipe the screen from right to left with your finger or click on the arrow at the bottom of the display, a list of installed programs will open. They are not divided into catalogs, but are displayed in a long alphabetical list. To add on main screen For new tiles, it is enough to hold your finger on the corresponding icon for 3-4 seconds - a context menu with a choice of actions will appear.

The general style of switching between applications is like flipping pages, and all this happens almost instantly. The speed of the interfaces is high, and the effects are quite appropriate. Visually, it looks very impressive and advantageous. There are no such special effects in either iOS or Andriod.

By holding the "Back" button, you can access the list of running. If they support the multitasking function, then when you click on the thumbnail, the program will start in the same form in which you left it. Thus, you can work with almost all applications.

It is noteworthy that for two weeks of active use, Nokia 920 has never hung. I also did not find any problems with performance. The device turned out to be surprisingly stable. This is largely due to the hardware platform, which I will talk about later.

Telephone functions

id = "sub5">

First of all, these include "Phone", "Contacts", "Messages".

Section "Contacts" represents data from detailed information about telephone numbers and subscribers. A record can have two dozen fields, be it last name, first name, patronymic, mobile, home phone number, email address, date of birth or anniversary, social media accounts, microblogging services, etc. The search in contacts occurs at once in all fields of the client, that is, you can dial the number, first name, last name, etc.

I would also note the close integration of the "Messages" section with social services. All correspondence with a specific person is displayed as a dialogue. At the same time, it makes no difference how the next message is sent or received - via SMS or chat Twitter, Facebook, etc. Photos are synchronized in the same way. address book phone. They are taken from social networks.

Dialing a number can be pulled out into the screen, or you can use the "Phone" section for this. Using call services is intuitive and straightforward.

Microsoft Internet and Services

id = "sub6">

The standard delivery includes Internet Explorer 10 with HTML5, Canvas support and hardware acceleration similar to the desktop version of the Internet browser. The browser works quickly and without glitches. Of the features: the address bar is located at the bottom of the screen and it is much more convenient to reach it if you work with the device with one hand. IE10 browser loads pages very quickly, supports modern work algorithms, which should be done by a progressive browser.

Access to Microsoft online services (music, games, office, mail, etc.) is carried out using Live ID. At the same time, it turned out that you cannot use everything that is in the Marketplace store with a Russian account. Only applications for Russia and the CIS are available.

Windows Phone 8 offers a range of cloud-based features. The OS has a built-in new office suite Office 365. There is basic support for basic programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) out of the box, right in the phone you can create and edit documents, without the need to install a paid package.

Multimedia capabilities

id = "sub7">

Nokia is positioning the Lumia 920 as a convenient multimedia tool. Among other things, the manufacturer focuses on sound High Quality... In headphones, the device really sounds very, very worthy. External speakers do well with music playback too. The device can be used as a good player. True, it is better to replace the native headset with something more decent.

A separate hub is defined for the music in the smartphone. The media manager is quite cumbersome and requires you to install itself to sync to your computer (much like iTunes). The player has remained similar to the one that was, it is quite functional and beautiful, equalizers have been added. This, by the way, is an achievement of Nokia, there are no equalizers in other Windows Phones.

Of the unique programs, it is worth noting the Nokia Music service. He can play music already on the phone, as well as show announcements of upcoming concerts of various artists and bands.

In addition, using your Nokia Store account information, you can access the Music Store and free music service on the Mix Radio Network. Mix Radio has ready-made playlists of a dozen genres. The feature of the service is that these playlists can be downloaded for local listening for one month, of course, for free. Download a mix or several and listen to them offline on the road. Mixes can be updated regularly, there are no restrictions. Instead of mixes, you can also listen to compositions similar to your playlist: in the "Create" item, you need to drive in, for example, "Linking Park", and the program will offer a set of similar artists and compositions. Very comfortably!

Lumia 920 supports unconverted video.

Installing new programs

id = "sub8">

New programs and other applications can be downloaded for free and installed from the Marketplace over the Internet directly from your phone. There are over 200,000 apps in the Marketplace now. Appearance the program is intuitive, there is a search for applications by category. They, in turn, are broken down into "Programs" and "Games". Within each of the sections there is also a division into categories.

Over the past year, the number of programs and games for smartphones on WP has increased significantly, and prices for paid content have decreased. So, among the most popular and demanded in the Marketplace there are free clients of social networks "Vkontakte", Facebook, Skype, Twitter, Foursquare, the Portal of Public Services, offline navigation from Nokia and much more.

It is noteworthy that WP8 has gotten rid of strange restrictions. Now you can easily take a screenshot of the screen, you do not need a Zune to copy music, movies in AVI are played without conversion, you just need to copy them to the phone's memory. Can read e-books in FB2 or TXT. You can transfer files via Bluetooth ... The changes are dramatic, agree. If earlier Windows Phone was similar to iOS, limiting the user literally in everything, now it offers a very interesting compromise between iOS and Android.

Photographic capabilities

id = "sub9">

One of the key features of the Nokia Lumia 920 is the presence of an 8.7 megapixel camera with optical stabilization. The maximum image resolution in this case can be 3552x2000 pixels. There is also an LED flash, which can also be used as a flashlight. It is worth noting Carl Zeiss optics and high aperture F2.0.

The interface for working with the camera is ascetic, simple and intuitive, there is a standard list of settings. You can select the shooting mode, white balance, ISO value, aspect ratio (16: 9 or 4: 3) and set the exposure value. You cannot select a resolution. There are additional programs for shooting panoramas, animated photos and portraits (continuous shooting and then choosing the best shot).

It is worth noting that the smartphone camera allows you to get high-quality images even in the dark. The fact is that the device sets a slow shutter speed, and optical stabilization tries to eliminate camera shake at the time of shooting. In addition, optics and light sensitivity play a significant role.

I also note the wide-angle 26mm lens used in the Lumia 920. The frame contains about 20% more information than in the frame taken with the camera. Samsung Galaxy 5. True, the detailing suffers.

The device can record video in H.263 / MPEG4 format with a resolution of 1920x1080, 1280x720, 800x480, 640x480, 320x240 at 30 frames per second. Movies are of good quality, moving objects are not smeared, thanks to automatic stabilization. Lumia 920 supports formats and codecs: 3gp, .3g2, .mp4, .wmv, .avi (MP4 ASP and MP3), .xvid (MP4 ASP and MP3).

Navigation and maps

id = "sub10">

The Nokia 920 has a mapping service, Nokia Maps, which includes a standard map view as well as navigation by car. It is worth noting that detailed maps of a larger number of Russian cities with a population of more than 5 thousand people are available here, there is no need to talk about Europe - they are there in full, similarly for other countries.

When the program is launched, information is loaded from base stations operator and GPS satellites about the location, current time, and maps are downloaded. After receiving the coordinates, you can determine where you are at the moment. In the program menu there is a search for objects by text information, address, geographic location, history, contacts stored in the phone. All objects on the map are displayed with a corresponding icon. It is possible to display street names and other information in Latin. There is support for searching in Cyrillic.

The user can choose the option of displaying the map - 2D or 3D picture, day or night mode. In addition, the option of displaying "satellite view" has been added, it is similar to what we see in the maps of the Here.Net service.

Nokia Maps contains information about public transport - the maps are superimposed on the metro map, as well as the lines of trolleybuses, trams, etc.

When navigating, a pre-marked route is displayed in big bold arrows. Among the pleasant features, you can find information about the weather, the situation on nearby roads, etc.

Among the chips, we note the augmented reality application Nokia City, where you select one of the categories (food, hotels, attractions, transport, and so on), and using a compass and GPS positioning, the smartphone software identifies the names of stores, restaurants, metro stations, etc. all information about them, including telephones.

In general, navigation using Nokia maps is similar to other similar services, only here maps can also be used offline. To do this, do not forget to load the maps into the phone memory.

Hardware and performance

id = "sub11">

Nokia Lumia 920 is powered by the fourth generation Qualcomm Snapdragon platform: Qualcomm MSM8960 dual-core 1.5 GHz processor, Adreno 225 graphics core. The chipset is made using 28 nm technology. The amount of RAM is 1 GB.

The installed hardware allows the communicator to work without any hesitation. The speed of the interfaces, as well as the loading of programs and utilities, are in line with the requirements of the time. Everything works quickly and without brakes, and the special effects of the design enhance the experience. Subjectively, Nokia Lumia 920 works much faster than iPhone 5 or Samsung Galaxy S III. This is largely due to the fast interfaces implemented in the operating system, well, and the hardware component should not be forgotten.

32 GB allocated for data storage internal memory... This volume cannot be expanded. However, each smartphone owner is offered a 7 GB virtual flash drive in the SkyDrive service. The disadvantage of such a proposal is that you will not receive information without access to the Internet.

Communication capabilities

id = "sub12">

You can connect to another computer or the Internet via Wi-Fi or a USB interface cable [version 2.0].

Nokia Lumia 920 supports wireless accessories and bluetooth headsets 2.1 with EDR and A2DP, including wireless stereo headsets. Alas, you cannot transfer files from phone to phone via Bluetooth.

The smartphone works in GSM (850/900/1800/1900), UMTS (850/900/1900/2100) and LTE (800/900/1800/2100/2600) networks, all high-speed data transfer standards are supported. The novelty from Nokia should become the first device in Russia with LTE support. However, this fact has not yet been established. Even in St. Petersburg and Moscow, the Lumia 920 does not see a working LTE network at close range.

Introduction

"Come to the dark side, we have cookies"
Star Wars Joke

The new Windows Phone-flagship of the company was presented in September, and at the beginning of November the new product is already on sale, including in Russia. On our site there are several materials on this Nokia announcement, an article by Eldar Murtazin on the company's position and its prospects, as well as my opinion on the Nokia Lumia 920 following its first presentation.

After the announcement, I really wanted to feel the device live, walk around with it for at least a week in order to make an impression on my own. Then it seemed to me that Lumia 920 is probably the most successful WP-smartphone of the company, because Nokia finally managed to combine all the components of a high-quality smartphone in one device: excellent filling, cool screen, camera, and all this was "packed" in beautiful case made of polycarbonate. Story! The device fell into my hands almost on the same day with HTC Windows Phone 8X, so I had the opportunity to compare both smartphones with each other, walk with each of them, also compare both new products with top-end android flagships and eventually prepare this material. In the review, you will come across pictures and even blocks of photos from the material on HTC Windows Phone 8X, because I tested both devices at about the same time, and almost all users compare them with each other, so frequent comparisons and references from one review to another and vice versa, this is normal.

Contents of delivery:

  • Smartphone
  • Non-removable battery (2000 mAh)
  • Charging unit
  • USB-microUSB cable
  • Wired stereo headset (to match the body color)
  • "Paperclip" to access the microSIM slot

The delivery set is as simple as possible: earbuds to match the color of the case, an interestingly shaped charging block, an ordinary cable and a paper clip.

Design

Nokia Lumia 920 is nothing new in terms of design, and this is probably good. The company has already applied a similar design in Nokia N9, Nokia 800, 900 and their variations, it is familiar to users, they love it, they highlight it as an advantage of the company's products. The design is really successful, against the background of the same type of android smartphones and recently also of the same type of windows phone smartphones Nokia with its Lumia line somehow stands out, and the new device is no exception.

The smartphone has no unnecessary details, decorative elements and other husks, it looks strict, but at the same time simple and neat. Even the yellow device that I had does not resemble a cheap craft or a baby rattle, although the color is conducive to such a perception.

Nokia N9, Nokia Lumia 800, 900 and 920

The Nokia Lumia 920 comes in five color options for the case: there will be strict black, white and gray colors, as well as cheerful red and yellow. Devices in yellow, red and white are made of glossy plastic, black is matte. All colors will be sold in Russia except gray.

Body materials

The smartphone is made in a unibody-case, using polycarbonate, one of the types of plastic. The screen, the area with the camera module above it and the area with the sensor block below are covered with scratch-resistant toughened Gorilla Glass 2. The glass is literally half a millimeter raised relative to the body surface. The screen does not scratch if you take scissors or a knife and run it over the display with a little effort, but you need to understand that such a coating wears out, and if you use Gorilla Glass inaccurately, you can cover it with a layer of scratches, if you wish.

My yellow phone had one drawback - due to the glossy body, it was constantly getting dirty and covered with greasy stains, I had to wipe it from time to time. But the screen did not get dirty at all.

Assembly

It's probably not entirely correct to talk about the build quality after a week of using the device, but this week I got the impression that the build in the Lumia 920 is excellent. No creaks, no backlash, key travel is clear and moderately hard.

Dimensions (edit)

The height and thickness of the Nokia Lumia 920 is almost identical to the HTC 8X, only 4 mm wider. In reality, the dimensions of the "lumiya" are perceived in a completely different way, the smartphone seems huge and heavy, which it is. If the HTC 8X is impressed by a compact and thin device, then the Nokia Lumia 920 is like a shovel. I showed the smartphone to my friends, acquaintances, and they all immediately noted that the smartphone is large and heavy.

Let's compare the dimensions of Nokia Lumia 920 and other current devices:

  • Apple iPhone 4S- 115.2 x 58.6 x 9.3mm, 140g
  • Apple iPhone 5- 123.8 x 58.6 x 7.6mm, 112g
  • HTC Windows Phone 8X- 132.4 x 66.2 x 10.1mm, 130g
  • Nokia Lumia 920- 130.3 x 70.8 x 10.7mm, 185g
  • Samsung Galaxy Note II- 151.1 x 80.5 x 9.4mm, 183g
  • Samsung Galaxy S III- 136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6mm, 133g

The Lumia 920 fits comfortably in the hand, but not due to the shape or materials, but primarily due to the weight. You can carry your smartphone in the pockets of your trousers or jeans, but I don't really know how to walk with it in shorts in the summer, not everyone wants to put it in a shorts pocket. But in the outer pocket of the winter down jacket, the device will lie perfectly, pleasantly pulling the jacket down, so you will always know for sure that your smartphone is still there, in your pocket, dear!

Control elements

In Nokia Lumia 920, traditional for Windows Phone Smartphone s block of keys. The main control element is the screen and a panel of three touch-sensitive keys below it, a block of buttons below the screen with a white backlight that turns on only if you are working in low light conditions. On the left - the "Back" key to go back one screen, while holding this button, the ribbon of running applications is called up for easy switching between them. Center - Windows checkbox to return to the home screen and invoke voice control (hold down the button). On the right is the global search key, when you press or hold it, one action occurs - the launch of the Yandex search window.

The touch-sensitive keys are comfortable, large, you cannot miss them or accidentally press the neighboring button, the button illumination is of high quality and bright. Each time you touch any of the touch keys, the device vibrates slightly. All three keys can be pressed with gloves (not leather), the sensor unit responds well to such presses.

The screen off button is located on the right side, under the volume key. In my opinion, for a right-handed person, this is the optimal location of the power key; it is very convenient to reach it with the thumb of the right hand. When you hold down this key, a screen appears, pulling which you can turn off the smartphone. The volume rocker is also located here, it protrudes above the body, and it is convenient to press it even blindly. At the bottom of the right edge there is a camera button, a short press of it launches the camera, a light touch - focusing, pressing it all the way - shooting.

At the top there is a 3.5 mm jack for connecting a headset or headphones and a compartment for a microSIM card. To open it, you need to insert a special paper clip into the hole (I don’t know what is the best name for this item).

At the bottom there is a microUSB connector for charging and connecting a smartphone to a computer, a microphone hole and stereo speakers, spaced apart on the sides of the microUSB port.

On the front side, in the upper part, there is an earpiece covered with a mesh. To the right of the speaker is the 1.3 MP front camera, to the left is the light sensor and the proximity sensor. There is no indicator light.

Screen

The Nokia Lumia has a 4.5 ”IPS touchscreen display with a resolution of 1280x768 pixels. The screen displays up to 16 million colors, the ppi value is 332 (dots per inch). The protective coating is Gorilla Glass 2. The color rendition, in my opinion, is excellent, the colors are calm, moderately bright and contrasting, the viewing angles are maximum, there is a very good margin of brightness. I used the automatic brightness level adjustment, and during the operation of the smartphone I did not have any complaints about this system, most often the system sets about half the brightness from the maximum, and this is more than enough for comfortable work. The display responds well to finger touches.

The company notes that the screen has excellent black depth (it really is), it also uses PureMotion HD + technology, on paper this means that the screen is very fast (minimal matrix response time) and the interface is drawn on it without blur or jerking. In practice, it all depends on the user, because I, for example, have not remembered for a very long time that I was embarrassed by the low response time of the matrix in my smartphone. Perhaps I paid attention to this in the days of communicators on Windows Mobile and phones with the simplest color screens, but that was a long time ago. If you take HTC Windows Phone 8X and Nokia Lumia 920, start synchronously launching the same applications and menus on them and at the same time closely monitor the displays, you can hardly find a difference in response time, I did not find.

As with the HTC Windows Phone 8X, the Lumia 920 has a feature related to HD resolution. Many programs that support displaying their tiles on the home screen have not yet been rewritten for a new resolution, and as a result, using them on the start screen is inconvenient due to the fact that the quality of images inside the tiles is low. This applies, for example, to all weather display programs, in the standard tile size they look blurry, you have to reduce them to the minimum size, and in this case it is not always possible to see the information inside the tile.

Screen comparison

I will not comment on this block, because each of us has our own requirements for the display, its color rendering, brightness level, and so on. Below are comparative photos of the screens of four smartphones, the brightness of the backlight in each of the devices is set to maximum.

Left to right: HTC 8X, Nokia Lumia 920, Samsung Galaxy S III, HTC One X

Camera

One of the key features of the Nokia Lumia 920 smartphone is the main camera with OIS. Camera resolution - 8.7 MP, maximum image resolution - 3552x2000 pixels. The front camera with a resolution of 1.3 MP, also "knows" how to write video in HD-resolution (720p). Near the main camera module there is a dual LED flash, it is used for shooting and during video recording, as well as before shooting for better focusing (focus assistant). In the camera settings, you can select the shooting mode, white balance, ISO value, aspect ratio (16: 9 or 4: 3) and set the exposure value. You cannot select a resolution.

There are additional programs for shooting panoramas, animated photos and portraits (continuous shooting and then choosing the best shot).

I asked Roman Belykh to describe the quality of photos and videos taken by the Nokia Lumia 920 smartphone, he understands the issue better than me, and that says it all. Examples of photos and comments by Roman are below:

One shot shooting(Here it is necessary to clarify. Usually I take a lot of photos (five times photographed a tree, five times a well, and so on), the review includes the best shots. This time I decided to take the Nokia Lumia 920 and Samsung Galaxy S III and just make them equal number of frames, one attempt for each object (tree, well, etc.):

Nokia Lumia 920 Samsung Galaxy S3

Nokia Lumia 920 vs Samsung Galaxy S III comparison

Roman Belykh: In sunlight, the shots come out great, in fact, as is the case with any camera. The Lumia 920 handles backlighting well: it practically does not increase the ISO value and exposure to stretch the picture, and also tries to choose the right shutter speed. The main feature of Nokia can be considered getting bright shots at night. This is achieved in the following way: the device sets a slow shutter speed (judging by the EXIF data - from 1/8 to 1 second), and optical stabilization tries to eliminate camera shake at the time of shooting. In addition, optics and light sensitivity play a significant role. The 920 has an f / 2.0 aperture - it collects more light than many mobile cameras and even "soap dishes". It also affects the depth of field, so when shooting landscapes it will be slightly less, but portraits and macro photos will be the best. Based on the same EXIF data, the ISO value reaches 800 to achieve the maximum effect. It could have been twisted even more, but, unfortunately, the size of the matrix limits us in this. The fact is that the matrix of the Nokia 920's camera is quite small - 1/3 inch, so increasing the ISO will lead to a strong digital noise. For example, in Nokia N8 the matrix is 1 / 1.83 ", and in Nokia 808 - 1 / 1.2" - incredibly huge for mobile devices.

Nokia Lumia 920 Samsung Galaxy S3

By the way, a wide-angle 26mm lens is used here. The frame contains about 20% more information than the frame made with the Samsung Galaxy S III camera. The negative side is low quality: the image is blurred at the corners of the photos and chromatic aberrations appear. Alas, with such sizes of optics (with a wide-angle lens) you shouldn't expect anything else.

The detail of the photos is slightly above average and loses slightly to the SGS III. There is only one reason, as I said above, - the small size of the matrix: when you enlarge the photo to 100%, you can see artifacts or just a "mess" of pixels. The white balance (WB), in my opinion, "jumps" a lot, but this is not the fault of the optics or the matrix, but the software of the Nokia 920. I think they will "finish" it.

However, do not be alarmed, since I judge the camera from a professional point of view, and an ordinary user may not even notice all these shortcomings. In any case, the Nokia 920's camera deserves special attention and deserves the title of one of the best in portable devices.

Video

Video is recorded in mp4 format (h.264 codec) with variable recording rate, from 3-30 frames per second (average 29). In FullHD resolution, video is recorded in a variable bitrate (on average 21,000 kbps. Audio is recorded using the aac codec in stereo mode. Two resolutions are available for video: 1080p (1920x1080) and 720p (1280x720). For video, you can manually select the white balance and enable or disable tracking focus.

In order to evaluate the quality of video recording in Nokia Lumia 920, as well as the work of optical stabilization in this mode, I took the device, attached it with tape to the Samsung Galaxy S III and thus recorded two videos on each of the smartphones. You can see them below along with Roma's comments.

Roman Belykh: Like most modern top-end smartphones, the 920 is capable of capturing 1080p (1920 x 1080 pixels) video at 30 fps. When shooting, optical stabilization is used. If we compare the videos of Nokia Lumia and Samsung Galaxy S III, then the latter clearly loses: although the picture remains relatively stabilized, the image itself is very blurry when shaken, and in general the video is less contrasting and detailed. In low light conditions, the Lumia camera behaves perfectly: the number of frames does not drop, the WB is selected correctly and the light sensitivity practically does not decrease, i.e. videos on Nokia 920 are perceived as if they were made with a good video camera.

The video shot on Nokia has a bitrate of 21 Mbit / s, on Samsung - 16. The sound in the 920 is mono, 96 Kbps, 44 kHz; Galaxy S III - Stereo, 128 kbps, 48 kHz. Personally, I like the sound recorded on Nokia more, it is more pleasant. On the S III, it is too high-frequency and starts wheezing when overloaded.

If when comparing Nokia and Samsung photos it was difficult to give the “palm” to one of the two devices, then in the case of video recording, the Lumia 920 is the undisputed leader. The only remark is the non-smooth operation of the exposure.

Feature of Nokia Lumia 920 video:

  • File format: MP4
  • Video codec: AVC, 21 Mbps
  • Audio codec: AAC, 96 Kbps
  • Channels: 1 channel, 44 kHz

Feature video Samsung Galaxy S III:

  • File format: MP4
  • Video codec: AVC, 16.4 Mbps
  • Resolution: 1920 x 1080, 30 fps
  • Audio codec: AAC, 128 Kbps
  • Channels: 2 channel, 48 KHz

I remind you, dear readers, that at the end of November, Sergei Kuzmin and I will prepare a large comparison of cameras of current smartphones. There will be: HTC 8X, HTC One X +, Nokia Lumia 920, 808, SGS III and Note II, a smartphone from Sony and maybe something else. Don't switch.

Autonomous work

The device has a non-removable Li-Ion 2000 mAh battery. In my case, Nokia Lumia 920 worked on average two days with the following load: music 2-3 hours per day, push-mail for the main mailbox (Gmail), Internet via Wi-Fi and EDGE / HSDPA (about an hour), 40- 60 minutes of calls, as well as sending and receiving about 10-20 text messages. The screen brightness has been set to automatic. After Android smartphones, such an indicator of battery life is a balm for the soul, it spoils the picture a little of the impossibility of walking around the Marketplace in search of something ", as can be done in iOS and Android, sitting for hours looking for interesting programs and toys. In the case of Windows Phone, all high-quality applications have long been known and heard, and most software is still an outright slag.

The smartphone has a battery saving function, when turned on, a heart appears over the battery charge icon, and the smartphone goes into severe saving mode, multitasking mode is turned off, and automatic account synchronization.

Performance

The smartphone is built on the Qualcomm MSM8960 platform with a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor. The device has 1 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal memory for data storage (approximately 29 GB is available to the user). The device plays video in FullHD-resolution with a quality of 5000-10000 kbps without any problems using a standard player, among the supported formats and codecs: AVI / MP4 / WMV / H.264 / H.263.

There are no complaints about the speed of the device, the device literally flies, there are not even the slightest slowdowns and slowdowns in the work and animation of the system. Excellent speed and smooth interface are still one of the major advantages of Windows Phone 8 and any device based on this OS.

Interfaces

The smartphone works in GSM (850/900/1800/1900), UMTS (850/900/1900/2100) and LTE (800/900/1800/2100/2600) networks, all high-speed data transfer standards are supported. The novelty from Nokia should become the first device in Russia with LTE support.

Built-in module Bluetooth 3.1 + EDR... Most common profiles are supported, including A2DP.

Wi-Fi (802.11a / b / g / n)... The smartphone has a dual-band Wi-Fi module (2.6 GHz and 5 GHz). There are no additional Wi-Fi settings.

Wi-Fi router... The device has a function of "sharing" 2G / 3G Internet connections via Wi-Fi. In the menu of wireless interfaces, the "Shared Internet" option is enabled and its settings are opened, where the user is prompted to select a network name and password.

NFC... The device is equipped with an NFC chip, you can use it in Windows Phone 8 as follows. A number of applications support the "touch and send" function, this can be a contact, an open page in a browser, a document, an image, in general, all applications where when called context menu there is a line "Send" and then a field "Touch and Send". I can click "Send> Touch and Send" in the IE browser on the Lumia 920, then lean it back against the back of another WP8 device and a notification will appear on it, if you accept it, the same page that I opened on the "lumia" ". It's the same with pictures and other content.

You cannot view the number of remaining trips on your metro pass using the Yandex Metro program. Perhaps this functionality has not yet been added to the application, I do not know for sure.

Navigation

One of the few advantages Nokia has over its competitors in the Windows Phone market is proprietary software, including navigation software. Of course, Nokia maps are available on smartphones from other manufacturers, as well as offline map view, but the rest of the applications remain exclusive to Nokia devices. But first, briefly about the cards.

The Nokia Lumia 920 comes with Nokia Maps, which supports offline navigation, which means that maps of any region of the world or city can be easily downloaded into the device's memory and then used without the need for an Internet connection. You do not need to pay for downloading maps, the cost of Nokia Maps is already included in the price of your smartphone. The application is accurate, with a detailed map, it contains the outlines of houses, the numbers of buildings, buildings and structures, courtyard passages are displayed, you can turn on the hybrid mode showing traffic jams or public transport schemes. There is a POI base (points of interest).

If you select two points in Nokia Maps and get a route between them, the application will prompt you to continue in the navigation program - Nokia Drive. This is a navigation program for route guidance with voice prompts indicating the distance to the maneuver and other features of the navigation software.

Also, the Nokia Lumia 920 has an application for finding public transport that can be used to get from point A to point B. This program seemed strange to me, it successfully gives routes to points inside the Garden Ring, but when I enter an address in the north of Moscow to center, the application simply does not find routes.

And the last application from the "navigation set" is Nokia City. This is an augmented reality program, launching it, you see objects in front of you through the viewfinder, for example, the street, and on the screen, hints are placed on top of the objects, what and where is located. These can be cafes, shops, etc.

Text and voice text input

The default keyboard in Windows Phone 8 hasn't changed much from previous versions systems. For those who found it comfortable (and there are many such people) it will still be convenient, but for others who did not like it, there are no positive changes. The keyboard is very simple, there is no vibration when you touch the keys, only sound accompaniment, when you switch to landscape mode, the keyboard area hardly changes, there are empty stripes on the left and right. However, the keyboard is comfortable and easy to type on. Affects the instant response of the keys to keystrokes and the high speed of the interface in Windows Phone, so even with a very fast typing speed you will not be able to "overtake the keyboard", which often happens on Android, for example. There are no such input delays here.

Like other smartphones based on Windows Phone 8, the Nokia Lumia 920 has voice dialing and voice control. You can say, for example, "open the alarm" or "open twitter", and the system will launch the required application. The same with calls, you can start a call with the phrase "call Vasya Pupkin mobile" or "call Vasya Pupkin mobile speakerphone". Unfortunately, there are not too many commands yet, or rather, only two, "call" and "open", at least that's what it says in the instructions for the application. On the other hand, the system already works well and recognizes voice commands very well, so Microsoft just needs to add more commands.

Software

The smartphone runs Windows Phone 8. I will tell you about all the functions and changes in WP8 compared to previous versions of the OS in a separate review, and now we will briefly go over the main features of WP8.

The most important innovation that can be noticed by eye (not talking about the core and other chips that the user cannot see when the smartphone is turned on) is an improved home screen. First, the empty strip on the right has been removed, and the arrow from the upper right corner has been moved to the very bottom area.

Secondly, tiles or tiles, as you are more accustomed to say, can now be resized, there is a standard square format and a reduced square format, and for some applications it will be possible to choose a format in the full width of the screen, but so far there are almost no such programs.

Thirdly, the lock screen has been redesigned (slightly). Now you can add more icons with notifications to it, display information from applications that support this format, for example, Facebook "knows how" to show pictures from your photo albums or from some selected album on the lock screen. Also, the currently playing track and music control buttons are displayed on the lock screen (this was the case before).

A children's corner has appeared, a special area of the system, where you can add a limited set of programs, set a password and turn it on before you let your beloved child play with the device.

The color of the tiles deserves special mention. Previously, there were 10 thermonuclear colors to choose from, or 11 in the case of HTC (plus corporate green), now there are 20 colors, while most of them are already more or less acceptable, not too bright and contrasting, so you can safely set them as a color tiles, without fear that your eyes will leak from the brightness and contrast to the floor, which constantly happened to me, for example, when using smartphones with WP7 and WP7.5.

The multitasking settings have changed, if earlier the programs remained to work in the background formally, that is, the system closed them and restarted when you called the supposedly running application again from the menu for selecting running programs, now everything is different. There is a setting for background tasks, where you can specify which applications will remain running in the background all the time, and which should be blocked. Not all programs support this setting, but this is just the beginning.

There is a function Reserve copy data to the "cloud", when turned on, the smartphone starts saving IE browser bookmarks, a list of installed programs and settings, text messages and photos to cloud storage.

Features of Nokia smartphones

I have already told about almost all Nokia branded applications in the section "" - they are key feature devices from Finnish manufacturers when compared with competitors on Windows Phone in terms of software. In addition, in the Marketplace you can find several more programs available only to owners of Nokia smartphones - these are utilities for panoramic shooting and several others for the camera, as well as a couple of other programs.

Accessories

During the announcement of Nokia Lumia 920, we could observe a rare picture for any company except Apple, when, along with the presentation of new smartphones or immediately after it, the company announces the imminent release of a variety of accessories for the newly announced phones. Let's briefly go through the main accessories designed specifically for the new line of Nokia smartphones.

Nokia Wireless Charging Plate (Nokia DT-900)... Nokia's proprietary wireless charger is a small platform of one of five colors to choose from (black, white, blue, red, yellow), which connects to the network, and the smartphone is simply placed on top of it and charges. The wireless charging process, according to Nokia, does not take much longer than charging with a wired charger.

This also includes an accessory. Nokia DT-901, it's still the same charging platform packed in a special fatboy case. It looks original, it will cost a little more than a platform without a cover. There are a bunch of colors again: white, black, red, yellow and blue.

And more from this series, Nokia DT-910, the second variation on the theme of a wireless charging platform, only a slightly different shape, and in this case, the smartphone should not be placed on the platform, but attached to it. Will be white and black.

JBL PowerUp Wireless Charging Speaker (Nokia MD-100W)... The JBL speaker with wireless smartphone charging and wireless connection for listening to music, supports Bluetooth and NFC connections. Body color options - black, white and blue.

JBL PlayUp Portable Wireless Speaker (Nokia MD-51W)... Another speaker from JBL, only portable and with different functionality. Outwardly, it resembles a children's bucket, with which they play in the sandbox, there will be four colors: white, black, blue and yellow. Supports Bluetooth and NFC connectivity.

Nokia Luna Bluetooth Headset with Wireless Charging (Nokia BH-940)... A cosmic design Bluetooth headset that will be available in black, white, red, yellow and blue. Supports NFC and wireless charging inside the charging glass, it will be sold with it (with a glass, in the sense).

Nokia Purity Pro Wireless Stereo Headset by Monster (Nokia BH-220W)... Again space, chopped design, connection to a smartphone via NFC or Bluetooth, and an active noise cancellation system. And also the proprietary Monster sound, not in the sense of "quality or poor quality", but with an emphasis on low frequencies. Who listened knows. The headphone case is glossy (alas), the colors are standard and typical for the entire line of accessories: red, yellow, black, white.

PC connection

I described in detail about connecting a smartphone to a PC in the review of HTC Windows Phone 8X, the procedure for Nokia Lumia 920 is exactly the same.

Conclusion

I had no complaints about the connection quality of Nokia Lumia 920 during the operation. The volume of the call and call loudspeakers is not bad, there is even a margin, and in most situations I used the volume values slightly above average. The vibration is average in strength, but the peculiarity of its implementation is such that we can safely say that there are no vibrations in the Nokia Lumia 920, as in any other WP8 smartphone. During incoming call the smartphone vibrates for just a couple of seconds and stops, and then there is one melody. That is, the vibration lasts literally two to three seconds for an incoming call.

In Russia, sales of Nokia Lumia 920 will begin in the near future, the cost at the start will be 24,990 rubles, rounded up to 25,000 for convenience. Before Samsung Ativ S hit the market, Nokia's smartphone will be the most "technically sophisticated" among Windows Phone 8 devices, but the 920 has no competition yet. Together with it, HTC Windows Phone 8 X goes on sale for comparable money, HTC smartphone more comfortable in the hand, feels like a more compact and neat device in daily use. But it loses to the Nokia in all other parameters: in the size of the display, in the amount of memory for storing data, in the capacity of the main camera, in the fact that there are no different accessories for it, like in Nokia. At the same time, the cost of the HTC 8X is 24,000 rubles, just a thousand less than the Lumia 920.

With the release of Samsung Ativ S, the situation will change and Nokia Lumia 920 will no longer occupy the position of the first among WP8 smartphones, these two models will be approximately on the same step, so the whole question is which of the smartphones will be cheaper.

This article was shared with us by our reader, an active user of Nokia products, Andrey @SpeedFire _ Kurapov. We hope you can save your phone with this tutorial. The recovery instructions for the Lumia 820 are almost the same. By the way, our instructions for flashing these devices can also help.

Below is the text of Andrey Kurapov, as carefully corrected by us as possible.

Background

As you can imagine, I had no intention of writing this article at all. He lived for himself without knowing troubles, used his Lumia 920 for more than a month now and thought that our love is mutual, and that it will never let me down. But today THIS happened! In the morning I took the phone off the charger, left the house, was about to turn on music in my Bluetooth stereo headset Nokia Essence (by the way, I highly recommend it), but the music from the headset did not turn on. I took out the phone - the screen is black and does not respond to the power button. From the depths of the subconscious, it surfaced that you need to hold some buttons. Squeezed everything - it does not work. Well, I got upset, threw it into my pocket, took off the headset and went. After about five minutes I decided to check what was wrong with him - wow, he turned on himself and is quite functioning for himself. The way to work was saved - music and film as usual passed the road.

But the joy was premature. A little later in the afternoon the phone went off again for no reason and this time it didn’t react at all. Sadness visited me.

Comparing the facts and analyzing what was unusual on this or last day, I found out that it was yesterday evening that the phone was discharged for the first time in all the time before it was completely turned off. That is, usually I have time to put it on charge in the evening, but here I did not have time. At the moment, I believe that this is the main reason.

Treatment

Judging by the forums, there are several forms of disconnecting your phone. As far as I understand, in most cases the phone falls into a "light coma" and you can get it out of this state relatively painlessly: you need simultaneously hold down the volume down button and the power button for 10 seconds... This is a so-called soft-reset, and for most, it helps bring Lumia back to life quickly.

If it does not help, then you can try to do a hard-reset (hard reset). After that, all phone data and settings will be erased: Hold down the Camera + Sound Decrease + Power On buttons after the vibration is triggered, the Power button must be released, the rest of the buttons must be held for another 5-6 seconds.

Cardinal treatment

But this is all theory from the forum. My phone was not responding at all to any of the above methods. And the only signs of life that he showed was the definition of a device in Windows when connected via a USB cable (the so-called dead mode).

As a result, I had to take the most serious measures for resuscitation. I aimed to reflash the phone in dead mode.

A warning! Generally speaking, the firmware on its own, in theory, deprives you of the warranty, so the phone manufacturer usually offers to hand over the phone to the service, and you will wait up to 35 days for it to be repaired. So you do everything that follows at your own peril and risk. (At the same time, in reality, I did not hear that someone was deprived of this guarantee, since it is very difficult to understand whether you were flashing the phone or not. But I warned you anyway).

Before that, I had already flashed Symbian phones, so I was not afraid of the process. The alternative in the form of a trip to the service pleased me much less. So I decided to give it a try. At the same time, install the Portico firmware, which has already been waiting for the order. So what do we do.

For those who know English, the basic steps are described in the video below. But! I did it a little differently.

Now, step by step.

Step 1: Download the firmware

Probably many of you know that earlier it was possible to download firmware from the NaviFirmPlus program. At the end of January 2013, this method was reportedly closed. Therefore, the first step is to find the firmware. Using Yandex, I soon found a Russian version of Portico on one of the forums. Direct link for Lumia 920 is below:

Download it and unpack it.

Step 2: Install Nokia Care Suite

Now you need to install the Nokia Care Suite service program (not to be confused with Nokia PC Suite). I think the best place to download it is this site:

Please note that the program requires the .NET Framework and VC ++ 2010 SP1 Redistributable components. At first I tried to install Nokia Care Suite without them under Windows 8, but all the time there was some inexplicable error on the VC ++ installation. Therefore, I highly recommend that you first download the files from the Requirements section (two links labeled Here) and install them. After that, the installation goes smoothly. When you try to download the site it will scare you, but you have to select "Download" and then "Download anyway". Everything will be fine.

Then download the Nokia Care Suite itself from the link "download Nokia Care Suite from Here". At the time of this writing, the direct link looked like this: http://nokiacaresuite.googlecode.com/files/Nokia%20Care%20Suite%205.0.msi

Install Nokia Care Suite by entering all the required information.

Step 3: Copy Firmware

Now you need to copy the files of our firmware downloaded in Step 1 to the desired location. More precisely, at the following address:

C: \ ProgramData \ Nokia \ Packages \ Products \ rm-821 \

The ProgramData folder is hidden, so either make the hidden folders appear or go directly to this link.

The rm-821 folder may not be present. If so, create it and copy all the firmware files from Step 1. There should not be any subfolders, all unpacked files should be in the rm-821 folder.

If you do not have a Lumia 920 then you need to know your RM-xxx model number and create the corresponding folder.

So the firmware has been copied to the folder - we begin the recovery process.

Step 4: recovery

Open Nokia Care Suite.

If there is no icon on the desktop, then you can run from here:

32-bit system: C: \ Program Files \ Nokia \ Nokia Care Suite \ Application Launcher \ bin \

64-bit system: C: \ Program Files (x86) \ Nokia \ Nokia Care Suite \ Application Launcher \ bin \

We select the item "Prioduct Support Tool For Store 5.0". He tries to ask for a password. In the drop-down menu, select not Pro, but External, and it starts up without a password.

Now we connect the phone via USB

A warning! It may not be relevant anymore, but before it was very important to connect the USB cable correctly. This is important for firmware. Connect the USB cable directly to the computer from the back of the system unit (where the motherboard connectors are). DO NOT connect via extension cords, DO NOT connect to the front of the case, and just in case, connect to a USB 2.0 connector, not a USB 3.0 connector.

After connecting, the smartphone will most likely be detected by the program and you will be able to see its picture. Next, I did something that unexpectedly revived my dead phone even before the start of the firmware process. In the Product Mode menu, I selected the option PowerOff... The phone suddenly vibrated, the Nokia inscription appeared and he just booted up without feeling guilty at all, as if nothing had happened.

But I decided that since I got to this point, I should also flash it for a new firmware at the same time (when flashing, all settings will be lost and everything will have to be set up again, so think about whether you want this).

Step 5: Firmware

Choose File - Open Product from the menu and find our phone. We select its code, which must match the name of the folder from Step 3 (in our case, RM-821):

- If the phone is still dead and does not turn on, then select Recovery, and then Start. I had a different case, but judging by the video from the link given at the very beginning, you first need to hold down the Volume Down + On buttons for 10 seconds, and when it starts to reboot, hold the Volume Up button. Then gears will appear and you can reflash.

- If you are lucky like me and the phone has already come to life (or was alive right away), then choose Refurbish and press Start... After that, the phone itself will enter the desired mode and will be flashed itself.

Here you go. If everything succeeded, then we enjoy the live phone and on new firmware... Congratulations!

Step 6: Afterword

Windows Phone has a rather annoying feature. Get ready for it. When you first set up your phone, the system does not offer to configure Wi-Fi. Therefore, if after the firmware you use the restore backup function, be prepared for the phone to download all the data through your operator's network. It's good if you have an unlimited tariff, but if not? This, of course, is an absolutely unthinkable flaw that Microsoft urgently needs to fix by adding the choice of a Wi-Fi access point at the very beginning of the setup.

That's all! Good luck in reviving and flashing the devices!

An interesting post has appeared in the my-nokia LJ community about how to "make" a Nokia Lumia 920 or any other Windows Phone-smartphone to work longer on battery power. A lot has already been said about this, but we are sure that among the little tricks below you will find some that you did not even know existed. Let's get started!

First, there are two screenshots taken by the owner of Nokia Lumia 920. The first one is “before” applying the recommendations below:

Usage scenario: Mail, Twitter, Skype update included, always on Mobile Internet and Wi-Fi. As the author of the note writes, now he has a “fully functional phone”. He also notes: from the graph you can understand how low the power consumption is when the screen is inactive (we are talking about the "horizontal" lines "in the second screenshot). How did the guy manage to achieve such results? Here are his tips:

  1. Setting up an Internet connection (Settings - Data transfer - Fastest connection). Watch your mobile internet. Quite possibly, the most stable is not 3G, but 2G connection. Pay attention to the "sticks" that indicate network reception. If you have not five, but two or three, then the category of the network should be lowered. Most likely, it will be better to turn on 2G internet. Otherwise, your Nokia Lumia 920 or any other WP-phone will constantly try to find a "better" connection, as a result - waste battery power. If you have five "sticks" - you have found the network in which you will save the most energy. At the same time, the author of the post writes: the Internet has become even faster due to stable work!
  2. Disable Xbox profile sync. But this is a real "Easter egg". As it turned out, the Xbox Hub has built in constant profile sync. A good goal - so that everyone knows who is playing what - turns into an increased consumption of battery power. You can turn it off by going through this chain: Games - Settings (slide up the ellipsis) - Connection to Xbox - Disabled.
  3. The same is with Nokia Music (only for smartphones of the Lumia line, and of custom builders, probably 🙂). Path: Nokia Music - (slide right) - Settings - Usage data - Turned off.
  4. Prevent running in the background for those applications that you do not need. Path: Settings - (shift to the right) - Background tasks - (application name) - Block.

Lock screen - timeout 1 minute
Wi-Fi - included
Bluetooth - disabled
Touch + Send - Disabled
Location - included
Battery Saver - Disabled
Brightness - automatic
Display + sensor - high sensitivity enabled (works with gloves).

If you do everything right, you will get the coveted "horizontal sticks". They show: in a calm state, your Lumia 920 or other WP-smartphone practically does not spend energy.

We hope you find these tips helpful, friends!
