Operating system fonts are the element that is always in front of our eyes, so its display should be as comfortable as possible for perception. In this article, we will explain how to set up a font in Windows XP.

Win XP has several options for changing the size and style of characters. This can be done both for the entire interface as a whole, and for certain types of windows. In addition, desktop icon signatures and fonts in some system applications are subject to customization. Next, we'll take a closer look at each of the options.

Overall font size

You can change the dimension of the labels for the entire system interface in the screen properties.

Setting the font for individual elements

In the tab "Registration" the button is located "Additionally", which opens access to the settings for the appearance of interface elements - windows, menus, icons, and so on.

You can change the font only for some positions in the drop-down list "Element"... For example, let's choose "Icon"(refers to the icons on the desktop).

Below will appear (become active) two more lists containing character styles and standard sizes, as well as buttons "Fatty" and "Italics"... In some cases, you can also choose a color. Changes are applied by the button OK.

Configuring the font in applications

For standard programs own settings are provided. For example, in "Notepad" they are on the menu "Format".

Here you can select the style and size, define the style, and apply a set of characters from the drop-down list.

IN « Command line» get to the desired block options can be by clicking RMB on the title of the window and going to "Properties".

Font settings are located on the tab with the corresponding name.

Smoothing

Windows XP provides the Clear Type screen font smoothing feature. It evens out the “ladders” on the symbols, making them more rounded and softer.

Result:

As you can see, Windows XP contains a sufficient number of settings for interface and application fonts. True, the usefulness of some functions, for example, anti-aliasing, remains in question, but in general the arsenal of tools is quite decent.

In this tutorial I will talk about screen font anti-aliasing, the so-called technology (from the English. "Clean font") - a method of smoothing text in certain types computer monitors(especially LCD) based on SubPixel Rendering technology, registered with Microsoft Corporation.

There are different opinions and controversies about this technology. But as for me, I am on the side of those who use it and see a clear advantage. Personally, it hurts my eyes when this technology is not turned on. Since I often have to sit at the computers of my clients, I noticed that many people do not have this anti-aliasing method enabled, and when I enable it with them , notice that the font looks more pleasing to the eye with the font turned on.

The screenshots below show how to enable it in Windows XP operating system, in Windows 7 it is enabled by default.

On the desktop, from scratch, press the right mouse button and select the item Properties... A dialog box will appear called Property: Screen ... At the top of the window, select the tab Registration... And then at the bottom we press the button.

Screen Properties Window

Then a window with effects will appear

window with effects

Required in the window Screen Properties push Apply or OK

Now you have everything turned on, if you have not noticed the difference, you can play with turning it on and off and watching the changes. I'll post screenshots with it turned off and on, just in case.

Cleatype is off
ClearType enabled

If this information was useful to you, please write your opinion in the comments, I will be grateful to you.

Good day! We analyze the topic - fonts, namely: what types of fonts there are, how to install (add) a font in Windows XP, Windows 7 what fonts and in what cases can be removed.

One of the greatest strengths of Windows is that the operating system centrally manages fonts, both screen and print. This means that we can install a font on the computer and then use it in any programs.

Windows uses two types of fonts: bitmap and vector. Bitmap fonts have fixed character sizes and are therefore inconvenient for use in Windows applications, but working with them is especially fast. Therefore, they are used not in Windows applications, but in the operating system itself, for example, in the design of standard windows. Bitmap fonts have a name extension .FON. Forget that they exist and do not try to delete them.

Vector fonts are computed. The description of the font contains the construction of its symbols, which does not depend on the size of the symbols themselves. Further, when it is necessary to insert a character of one size or another into the text, Windows calculates its image and displays the character on the screen or on the printer, depending on what is required. Vector fonts have a name extension .TTF. Some .TTF fonts are used by the operating system itself and it is best not to touch them. It happens that programs during installation add their own fonts. TTF - if the program needs them, you do not need to delete them.
The font files that are installed on your computer are stored in the C: \ Windows \ Fonts folder. Different weights of the same font can be in multiple files (regular, bold, italic, and bold italic).

let's look at the example of the font Lettres ombrees ornees, for this we download it from the Internet (after downloading, you can check the file for viruses in the header of our website):

Unpack the archive, click on the font with the right mouse button and in the menu that appears, click - install.

A window will appear informing you about the installation of the font:

To check for the presence of a font in our Windows 7 operating system, go to: Start > Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization > Fonts. We type in a search engine Lettres ombrees ornees and see that the font installation was successful.

Now it can be used in any program on your Computer or laptop, for example, in Word or Photoshop.

To install a new font on your computer, it is not enough to copy its file (s) to the C: \ Windows \ Fonts folder. With a simple copy, the font will not be "registered" in the operating system, so a special system tool is provided to install the font. It is represented by the Fonts icon in the Control Panel folder (Start > Customization > Control Panel). When you run this tool, a window opens with a list of installed fonts. Most of them are vector. Bitmap fonts are marked with a special icon.

Before installing fonts, it is advisable to close open program windows. This is not a requirement, but a recommendation. Fonts are installed using the File> Install Font command, which opens the Add Fonts dialog box:

In the Drive list, select the drive where the font is located, and in the Folders list, select the folder. Be sure to check the Copy fonts to Fonts folder box so that you can always reinstall this font in the future.

After selecting the drive and folder, wait until the fonts found there are displayed in the Font List pane - this may take some time. Next, mark in the list of fonts those that should be installed and click OK.

After installing new fonts, rebooting the computer is not formally required, but it is still desirable to do so. After installing the fonts, not all programs work correctly without rebooting.

Removing fonts. The presence of numerous installed fonts does not overload the operating room Windows system at least until the number of fonts exceeds one or two hundred. However, when there are too many fonts, it becomes inconvenient to work with them, if only because you have to spend time choosing the right font.

Exist special programs that make it easier to work with fonts are the so-called font managers. They allow you to group fonts so that different font bundles are used in different projects. If there are no such programs on the computer, the question may arise about manual removal of those fonts that are not regularly used.

Strictly speaking, deleting fonts is a moderately dangerous operation. There are fonts without which individual programs won't work at all. Figuring out which fonts a system and its programs need and which fonts can be dispensed with is serious research. Usually, after several years of working with a computer, each user has his own ideas about the set of fonts he needs. Addictions and habits to selected font sets are also formed. Therefore, as long as fewer than a hundred different fonts are installed on your computer, do not rush to remove them.

Before deleting a particular font, review it. To do this, double-click on its icon - a preview window will open. By the look of the font, you can guess how much you need it.

Don't remove too many fonts in one go - do it gradually, no more than two or three fonts a day. After working with different programs and making sure that everything is fine, you can proceed with the removal of the next portion. If something goes wrong, you will find the deleted fonts in the Trash and you can easily restore them. Gradually, fonts will be identified that are best left untouched, and you will have the necessary personal experience.

P.S. can also be used in any program that uses text.

A font in Windows is a way of displaying letters and characters. The typeface is usually consistent with a single stylistic system.

The main characteristics of a font are saturation, contrast, width, typeface, contrast, baseline, etc. Also related to fonts are such concepts as size, kerning and tracking.

The combination of indicators of these characteristics creates a unique, unlike other typeface.

Various fonts became available to users in the very first versions of Windows.

Fonts in Windows XP

Today we are going to talk about fonts in Windows XP and how to customize them.

The developers of Windows XP took care of the user-friendliness of font management. There is a separate window for managing fonts - with its help you can not only view the fonts available to the user, but also add new ones and delete old ones.

Fonts in Windows XP are called as follows: open the "start" menu, then select "control panel". Open the fonts icon. It looks like this:

We open it, after which the list of fonts available in the system will become available to us.

The contents of the window can be displayed in different ways - in the form of a list, a table, large or small icons. Font similarity mode is available in Windows XP - when activated, similar fonts will be displayed along with standard fonts on the screen.

Left click to display appearance font.

The window contains a button that displays a printed version of a particular font.

Setting up fonts involves many steps.

How do I install, uninstall and change fonts?

Remove unnecessary font: left-click on its image, open the “file” menu on the top panel and select “delete”.

Installing a new font: open the "file" menu and click "install font". It looks like this:

A new dialog will open in which you can select the location of the desired font.

Changing fonts is done like this.

Open the “element” list, in it we need to select the Windows component, the font of which we want to edit.

The following changes are available to us:

  • font size;
  • font color;
  • the font itself;

We make the necessary changes and save them by clicking the "ok" button.

Adjusting the clarity of fonts in Windows XP

The clarity of fonts in the system can be adjusted independently. This is a method for smoothing screen fonts in Win XP called Cleartype. This technology is provided by itself by Microsoft and has been available for use for almost 15 years. Cleartype can be configured in Win XP as well.

Open the “Control Panel” menu through “Start”, then - “Appearance and Personalization”. Next - find “Fonts”, open the link “Setting up Cleartype text”. A window will appear.

Item "Enable ClearType":

mark it with a tick and go to the next setting item (click “next”).

In the next window, you will choose a screen resolution that is convenient for you.

A window opens with four options for displaying text. Select the optimal one by clicking on it with the left mouse button. Click "next".

Cleartype mode is activated.

Difficulties with fonts in Windows XP

Incorrect display of fonts does not load operating system and does not in any way affect the stable operation of the computer, however, it creates a lot of minor troubles for the user. Font problems occur after installing some programs, after automatic updates etc. Many users in their hearts reinstall Win, but there are less radical ways to solve the problem. We will tell you about them.

The language settings on the system must be set correctly. To do this, follow the path: "Start", "Control Panel", "Date, Time, Language ...". We select the tab “regional parameters” = >>> “Language standards ...”, specify the language - “Russian”. In “location” we indicate our country ”.

  • Tab “languages”, section “Languages and text input services”, click “details”. In the window that opens, check if the Russian keyboard matches the Russian language in the "Options" tab, the "Installed services" section. We save by clicking "ok".
  • Section "language of programs that do not support Unicode". We open the "additional" tab, select "Russian" in it. We save the changes.

If the above settings in Win XP are enabled on the computer, then the problem can be solved through the system registry. This is how it is done.

  1. We launch the "registry editor".
  2. Next, expand the branch: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM CurrentControlSet Control Nls CodePage.
  3. The “CodePage” section contains a fairly large number of parameters. Among them we need to find “1250” and “1252”. Click the left mouse button twice on the first of them. The "Change string parameter" window should open. In the “value” change “c_1250.nls” to “c_1251.nls”. We save the result. In the same way, in “1252” we set “1251”

After the above steps, the problem with correct display fonts in Win XP should disappear.
