Frankly, there are many reasons why I like Sennheiser products. Legendary brand, attention to detail in design and production, sound quality, extended warranty on all their products. The legendary German concern does not allow itself to fall below a certain level, not only in the top lines, but also in the quite affordable price segment. Just remember the super-popular ones - the level of sound quality and build quality for their price once simply amazed me. It was all the more interesting for me to pick up, or, if you prefer, listen to, a representative of the new generation of Sennheiser – the .

As you already understood from the name, headphones belong to the category of on-ear headphones in their form factor. Probably, now I risk hearing the dull murmur of experienced audiophiles who will tell me that in this form factor there cannot be good sound in principle, because the size of the drivers will not allow us to “pull” truly ultimate sound out of them. But, excuse me, gentlemen... aren't large, full-size headphones designed for quiet listening to music at home, along with a glass of good cognac and a Cuban cigar? And this is a sacred process that you obviously cannot repeat while on the road or sitting at your office laptop.

In-ears? Yes, I agree, the sound of good in-ear headphones allows you to enjoy music regardless of where you are, but, firstly, not everyone can do this without some discomfort in the ears, and secondly, let’s be honest, such sound will cost much more expensive for you. That is why the on-ear form factor of headphones has become a compromise option that will allow you not to lose much in sound, and not to part with your favorite music.

In general, as you probably already understood, today I will tell you about this very interesting representative of the Momentum line from Sennheiser - the Momentum 2 On-Ear model

I would like to make a reservation right away that I considered this model not only and not so much from the point of view of sound. I tried to approach the consideration more comprehensively - after all, for representatives of the younger generation of personal audio lovers, in addition to sound, it is also very important appearance, stylish...Beats will confirm it!

First impression

The first thing that pleased me when opening the box was the cozy velvety case for storing headphones on the go, which was also complemented by a cute fabric pouch. By choice, so to speak.

The visual inspection of the headphones was very pleasing good quality materials and assembly.

The ear pads are velvet, the metal headband is trimmed with tanned leather and stitching, the plastic cups are pleasant to the touch. The stroke of the mechanism, adjusted to the size of the head, is solid - tight, pleasant, without plastic “whack”, the cable is replaceable, with a smartphone control panel.

All this is what I call “attention to detail.”

The advantages of headphones during operation seem very obvious. The fit to the head size is comfortable, the cups do not put pressure on the ears, the fit is comfortable, which can easily be considered a tangible advantage for on-ear headphones. Velvet, soft ear pads allow you to wear the headphones for a long time. The ears do not rub and they do not start to sweat.

With my iPhone (and I got the “Apple” version), the headphones were found normally common language, the remote control works as it should, the microphone allows you to talk on the street without raising your voice too much. Although, in general, in this regard, I never expect anything supernatural - for me, headphones, even with a headset, remain primarily a means of listening to music.

Design

The design of the model will please the modern city dweller. It is made in a modern, youthful style and clearly speaks of target audience headphones. Holographic laser engravings on the cups in the form of the brand logo add brightness and unusualness to it. In general, bright, stylish, youthful... at the same time, in Sennheiser style, high quality!

In general, the youth orientation of Momentum 2 on-ear is clearly visible in the sound. On the one hand, it is proprietary, recognizable, Sennheiser - predominance of bass, calmness at the top, on the other hand, it differs in character from the sound of the same 650s. If the latter have a more classical sound, then Momentum’s sound is more “tailored” to electronic and pop music, in other words, to music that has a pronounced beat. At the same time, the bass is very well articulated, does not become humming, and does not suppress the rest of the spectrum. It simply prevails, as if slightly dominant, pushing, for example, vocals a little deeper into the background, making live instruments a little less bright in their sound, a little less passionate.

Sound

Probably, lovers of jazz and classical music may find this sound unnatural, not bright enough, and the dynamic range not wide enough. But we must be aware that for these genres in this price segment it is generally very difficult (if not impossible) to find portable headphones that meet all sound requirements, and the model in question is initially positioned by manufacturers for a different listener. Reverse and very the positive side This feature of the sound of “momentums” is that the headphones cope perfectly with overload, carefully separating frequencies without mixing them into a common musical mess even at a very decent playback volume. In addition, in acoustic compositions, especially where the rhythm is closer to slow, for me personally the headphones added a certain dark charm and atmospheric sound.

But young people will clearly love the Momentum M2 OE for their “drive” or, to put it in automotive parlance, “response” when playing electronic and pop music.

The sound itself, however, remains at a very good level for such a form factor.

I liked it

Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 have large and soft ear pads, which makes these headphones very comfortable. They provide excellent, refined sound, have high quality manufacturing and a new folding design. A remote control with microphone is provided for use with smartphones (versions compatible with Apple iOS and Android), as well as a nice protective case.

Didn't like it

A bit pricey; It would have been nice if both cables for iOS and Android were included in the package.

Conclusion

Although we would have preferred to see the Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 at a lower price, this model surpasses the “first” version both in sound and in terms of comfort.

Ratings

Overall rating– 8,2

Design – 9.0

Functions – 8.0

Sound – 8.0

Quality/price – 8.0

The only drawback of the Sennheiser Momentum headphones, which were generally highly rated in 2013, was their lack of comfort, noticeable after prolonged use. Naturally, this manifested itself individually for each user, but overall it turned out to be sufficient reason for Sennheiser to make some changes to the design of the headphones. This is how the Momentum 2.0 model appeared at a stated price of $350.

In fact, Sennheiser has improved the design of both the on-ear and full-size Momentum, which now comes in corded and wireless versions and has a foldable design. The latter circumstance simplifies the transportation of headphones in luggage, which will appeal to many users.

Wired and wireless Momentum 2.0 have larger cups and fit better to the head, completely surrounding the ears with ear pads. In addition, the ear pads themselves have become softer, and as a result, Momentum 2.0 is actually more comfortable to wear than previous version. Another change in the design of the headphones is a new connector.

It used to have a movable body that could tilt at different angles, but now it has a simple L-shape. As a result, the connector has become smaller and can be connected to a phone stored in a case.

It is worth recalling that Momentum 2.0 are available in versions compatible with portable equipment on iOS-based and Android. The difference between them is connecting cable(or rather, in the remote control with a microphone located on it), which comes with the headphones. In my opinion, at $350, both cables could come with the headphones (I use both Android and iOS devices), but for those who have only one type of smartphone or tablet, this may not be significant.

The Momentum 2.0 comes in two finishes, black and ivory, but more choices are expected in the future.

Sound

As for sound quality, Momentum 2.0 showed itself to be the best the best side and they are great for listening to music of all genres. Although the biggest difference between the old and new models is ease of use, the sound of Momentum 2.0 has also changed, although not as noticeably. They sound less bright, voices are more prominent, and the bass is weightier and more developed.

The Momentum 2.0 performed well on vocals, which ranged from Amy Whitehouse to Frank Sinatra, sounding neutral and clear. The NAD Viso HP70 is another balanced sound model and when we compared it to the Momentum 2.0 we noticed some differences. On the Syro album, the Aphex Twin, with tightly mixed electronics, provided a more open soundstage than the Viso HP50. Thanks to the slightly muted high frequencies, synth chords sounded less irritating to the ear through Momentum 2.0.

When listening to There Will Be Blood performed by Jonny Greenwood's orchestra, we noted the same effect - the Momentum 2.0 conveyed the sound of the strings richly and full, while the Viso HP50 sounded brighter and less powerful. Another rival for Sennheiser was Audio Technica ATH-MSR7, which reproduced cellos and basses more naturally, but surpassed them in the richness of sound of Momentum 2.0.

On Tribe Called Quest's The Low-End Theory, the bass was very convincing, but low frequencies the Viso HP50 were more detailed and detailed. The ATH-MSR7 also had a strong low-end response, with more emphasis on the drums.

Among the three mentioned models, it is difficult to determine the winner, especially since everyone has different requirements for sound quality, and people have different ears. The Momentum 2.0 has the warmest and richest sound, the ATH-MSR7 has the clearest sound, while the Viso HP50 are roughly in the middle in character.

We can say that the full-size Momentum 2.0 is significantly superior to more affordable on-ear headphones of the same model - both in sound and wearing comfort. On-ear headphones have too much bass emphasis, and despite the refined design, they don't sound very impressive for their price.

Conclusion

The Momentum 2.0 are a strong contender in their price range and are worth a look if you're looking for high-end over-ear headphones for use at home or on the go. At the time of release of this model, its price is a little high, but we hope that in the future it will be reduced to approximately the cost of the previous version.

The topic of high-quality portable audio is now more relevant than ever. The huge fleet of mobile devices has many owners who are partial to the musical theme, who very carefully select their headphones and are willing to pay good price for advanced solutions – especially wireless ones. Both newfangled brands with a young history and classic brands whose recognition has been won over many decades are competing for their attention.

The German company Sennheiser is one of these pillars of home and professional audio. They have many iconic models to their credit, including the world's first open-back headphones. Naturally, their line simply could not do without current wireless models. Meet Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 On-Ear Wireless – on-ear Bluetooth headphones for the era of mobile entertainment!

Design

First of all, let's remember that headphones are not only a means of listening to music, but also a stylish accessory. Naturally, everyone wants them to be a kind of decoration, and for this they need a bright, unique design that would become a weapon in the fight for buyers.

The appearance of Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 On-Ear Wireless stands out noticeably from other models of the brand. Their sophisticated and practical design with a slant towards minimalism will be loved by both amateurs and professionals alike. In addition, the design successfully combines elements of retro and modern style, which makes this model recognizable. Not forgotten are the decorations in the form of company logos and the Momentum line on the headband and earcup mounts.

In the second version of Momentum, a lot of work has been done in terms of the overall comfort of the headphones. They now have a convenient folding design, so the headphones take up less space when stored in the included carrying case. Some users of the first generation Momentum complained that the ear cups were a bit harsh and put undue pressure on the ears during long listening sessions. This nuance is taken into account: the Momentum 2.0 On-Ear cups fit more gently to the ears, and the ear pads are filled with softer and more pliable two-layer foam material. Now you don’t feel any fatigue even after several hours of continuous listening!

As usual, Sennheiser didn't skimp on materials. Of course, the Momentum 2.0 On-Ear feels like expensive and high-end headphones: the ear pads and headband are trimmed with Alcantara, a very durable synthetic material that resembles natural suede to the touch. In addition, it provides good ventilation to the ears and does not absorb moisture. The headband made of brushed stainless steel provides the necessary flexibility and strength, and there is no need to worry about the integrity of the headphones: everything is assembled and fitted conscientiously.

There are two colors available to choose from: a black version will appeal to lovers of the classics, and there is also an option with ivory cups in combination with a coffee-colored headband and ear pads. Such a noble combination will suit real dudes!

Controls and characteristics

The controls, as well as the on/off key, are located on the right earcup. They are convenient to use blindly, without being distracted from listening. Like many Bluetooth devices, the Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 On-Ear has built-in voice prompts with a pleasant female voice. It tells you when the headphones are ready for use and warns that the battery is low and it’s time to recharge the device.

By the way, time battery life at moderate volume it lasts up to 22 hours - an impressive result; one charge is always enough for a whole day of active listening. The range in wireless mode reaches 10 meters, and the stability of the connection is not satisfactory. In noisy air conditions, short-term interference is possible, but in practice this happens extremely rarely.

In addition to the fact that the Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 On-Ear headphones use the Bluetooth 4.0 wireless protocol for connection, they have a built-in function active noise cancellation to get the most intelligible sound in transport, during a flight and in other noisy environments. To pair with sound sources, it is convenient to use the built-in NFC tag: bring the headset to the corresponding smartphone, and voila, the devices have found a common language and established a Bluetooth connection without any hassle or searching.

If you need to connect headphones to a device without Bluetooth support, then in this case the kit comes with a 1.4-meter cable with a low-profile 3-pin mini-jack (3.5 mm), optimized for mobile devices. But it can be replaced with any other cable you like.

aptX codec support provides improved audio quality when wireless transmission from devices equipped with this function. For a long time Bluetooth was a bottleneck for wireless headphones, giving a sound that is reduced in spectrum - but now this is a thing of the past! Interestingly, with a wired connection, the headphones sound even a little better and more dynamic - real purists should take note of this.

As for the general technical characteristics, the headphones have a closed acoustic design for better noise insulation (including active). The declared sensitivity of 113 dB allows you to accurately convey the dynamics of a piece of music even at moderate volumes. Frequency range according to the manufacturer, it is 16-22000 Hz: the entire useful audible range is worked out with a reserve, so not a single detail escapes your attention. Finally, the low impedance of 18 ohms allows them to be used with a wide range of audio sources, including low-power portable devices, without loss of sound quality and punch.

It is worth mentioning separately that the Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 On-Ear is equipped with a built-in microphone, so, strictly speaking, these headphones belong to the class of headsets for mobile devices. When connected to a smartphone, you can answer calls without removing the device from your pocket, which is very convenient. Your voice is heard through headphones, so you can talk comfortably in any conditions, and you don’t intuitively feel the urge to raise your voice in order to “shout over” your surroundings.

Sound

The sound quality of the Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 On-Ear is consistently excellent and is one of the smartest wireless headphones you'll find. Firstly, they retain excellent sound detail when connected to Bluetooth. There are no extraneous artifacts or extra coloration, and the connection in aptX mode sounds even better: even the most ardent supporters of a wired connection will have nothing to complain about. However, you can always switch to wires: as already mentioned, the headphones work smoothly through a standard 3.5 mm plug, including headset mode with a microphone.

The tonal balance especially emphasizes the lower frequencies. This isn't the first time Sennheiser has emphasized the bass, but without doing anything criminal: just enough to give the music extra density without overwhelming the rest of the spectrum. This hardly affects the transparency of the mids and high frequencies! Therefore, listen to music on the Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 On-Ear both at home and outdoors: the necessary pressure is already achieved at moderate volumes and does not dissipate if you find yourself in a noisy environment. This is where the active noise reduction system comes to the rescue.

It's no secret that over-ear headphones themselves have an average level of noise insulation. Closed ear cups and delicate Alcantara ear pads block only some extraneous sounds, but do not greatly isolate low-frequency noise, such as the hum of traffic. To avoid blurring, Sennheiser has built active noise cancellation into the Momentum 2.0 On-Ear. It analyzes extraneous sounds using 4 microphones, and adds this signal in inverted form (i.e., an inside-out sound wave) to the sounding music. As a result - 90% extraneous noise successfully suppressed, especially those low-frequency components! At the same time, you do not find yourself in complete isolation and do not “fall out of reality,” so walking with such headphones on the street or in the subway is still safe.

Conclusion

The Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 On-Ear Wireless is an evolution of the popular line of headphones that is moving in the right direction. Perhaps the biggest step has been taken in the direction of ergonomics and comfort: the new ear pads do not tire at all during long listening sessions, and the headphones have a reliable folding design for easy carrying.

If we talk about their sound characteristics, then everything is at their best: excellent detail and dynamics both with a Bluetooth connection and via a wire. Ultimately, the Momentum 2.0 On-Ear doesn't have surgically precise sound, but it's designed to make listening to music bright and comfortable no matter where you find yourself. A moderate emphasis on low frequencies is appropriate, because it does not harm the rest of the spectrum. This combination will satisfy the tastes of most listeners. A separate bonus is the active noise reduction system, which helps to overcome noise that is not damped by the overhead ear pads.

The bottom line is that we have stylish and high-quality headphones that are perfect for portable devices, and will also be able to work with a smartphone headset. Great choice for modern people, for whom it is important to complement their street image and not take off their favorite wireless headphones most of the day!
