The 1080 Ti video card is a premium-segment device from NVIDIA. In terms of performance, this model also continues to hold sole leadership. As part of this review, we will analyze the mining power of the 1080 Ti, as well as the payback period.

Video cards of this generation are equipped with 11 gigabytes of GDDR5X graphics memory. In this regard, some cryptocurrency mining algorithms that are not optimized for modern types of video memory may experience performance problems. However, streaming GPU processors are capable of completely eliminating all kinds of failures of this type.

The heat dissipation requirements for a video card of this model are quite high - 250 W. However, by reducing the “Power Limit”, miners will be able to significantly reduce the heat dissipation of the GPU device without a significant loss in performance.

GTX 1080 Ti Specifications

The model is equipped with 6 GP clusters and 28 streaming multiprocessors. Compared to competitors, it stands out with a huge number of CUDA cores - 3584. The standard core frequency (without overclocking) is 1480 MHz. However, this figure can be further increased by about 100 MHz.

The bandwidth of the video memory, which operates at a frequency of 5505 MHz, is 484 GB per second. The best video card for mining is equipped with 1 HDMI connector and 3 more DP ports. Power consumption in standard mode (before overclocking) is 250 W. It is worth noting that users using the 1080 Ti for mining reduce the amount of energy consumed by using downvolts.

The chip will function stably, provided that the temperature does not exceed 91 degrees.

Which is better to choose: Palit GeForce GTX 1080 Gamerlock or Zotac GeForce GTX 1080? In terms of technical characteristics, these cards are identical. However, equipment from each manufacturer reacts differently to overclocking. Accordingly, in order to fully answer this question, two of these chips should be tested.

What is the hashrate on different algorithms?

To evaluate the power, the GeForce 1080 Ti card was run on ccMiner software. The video card operated with a reduced power consumption level of 250 W, but if its Founders Edition variation is involved in cooling, the power will increase by about 20%, which will ultimately amount to 300 W.

In the process of searching for the best algorithm for mining, the default settings that regulate the intensity of rotation of the cooling system radiators were stopped. A card of this model from Gigabyte took part in testing.

  • Using the Scrypt algorithm, it was possible to achieve a speed of 895 KH/s with a power consumption of 235 W. Using an improved version of this algorithm, the rate of cryptocurrency production fell almost by half, but the amount of energy consumed remained unchanged.
  • When working with the Decred algorithm, the video adapter demonstrated a power of 4595 KH/s, and the amount of electricity consumed was 250 W.
  • Perhaps the most popular hashing method, SHA-256, yielded a mining speed of 980 MH/s with a power of 250 W. This result once again confirmed the fact that the process of mining cryptocurrency on GPU devices using SHA-256 has lost its relevance, since the niche is occupied by integrated circuits.
  • With default settings, the video card on Cryptonight did not work correctly, the miner constantly closed, producing strange errors. As a result, the parameters were reduced from 10.75 to 10.25 and a hasher of 755 H/s was obtained with an energy consumption of 125 W. Cryptolight consumed the same amount of energy, but produced a power of 1210 H/s.
  • BMW, Quark, Jackpot hashing methods are not able to demonstrate maximum performance. Too low values caused the minimum mining speed. Therefore, using a 1080 Ti video card with these algorithms is absolutely pointless.
  • Mining the Ethereum cryptocurrency using the Ethash algorithm shows a speed of 27.7 MH/s, while consuming 250 W of energy.
  • Mining the digital currency Zcash using the Equihash algorithm shows a hashrate of 615 KH/s.

The power consumption results shown above are based on the GPU BIOS readings and are entirely within the TDP range. In other words, the real parameters of the system are not indicated in this statistical calculation.

To improve results, restrictions should be removed. However, such actions can lead to problems in the operation of the equipment cooling system. It is clear that it is impossible to normalize the temperature regime using improvised means. You will have to buy additional fans.

It is worth taking into account the fact that, even working within the TDP limits, miners will be able to achieve maximum energy efficiency indicators, while the equipment performance will practically not drop. Naturally, in the long term this option will be the priority.

If you test using other software, the final results may vary greatly. For example, you can mine ETH coins on the Claymore`s miner with default settings at a speed of 31.8 MH/s, this figure significantly exceeds the 27.7 MH/s shown on ccMiner. Therefore, take into account the software error.

GTX 1080 Ti Overclocking Capabilities

The video card's power was increased using the Founders Edition program, which initially assumes operation in modes that differ significantly from standard parameters. As a result, it was possible to calculate how fully the chip can be used to increase mining productivity and reduce the payback period of equipment. In the case of the 1080 Ti card, overclocking is key.

In a video card of this model, the performance of the chip is significantly limited. In addition, only one additional power source is installed. Initially, the temperature limits were only 180 W. By changing the driver settings, you can increase the power to 216 W.

The GTX 1080 Ti is also used in mining due to the new generation of GPU – 16 nm. This technology has contributed to increased overclocking efficiency. However, it is worth considering that electricity consumption will increase significantly.

After overclocking the GTX 1080, you should equip the equipment with a water cooling system or powerful, custom radiators. As a result, the hashrate will increase even more. Naturally, such experiments can lead to chip burnout. Therefore, be as careful as possible.

You should not take unnecessary risks when selecting the optimal video card settings during overclocking. For example, you can leave the core voltage at its default. An increase in TDP by almost a quarter made it possible to increase the chip and graphics memory by 240 MHz and 125 MHz, respectively.

With such indicators, the video card continuously mined ETH coins for 24 hours without any errors. The average increase in mining speed using different algorithms was 12%. With a subsequent increase in TDP limits and fine-tuned optimization of core and graphics memory frequencies, even better performance can be achieved.

What to mine on such a video card and payback period

Naturally, first of all, absolutely all users are interested in how much profit such a video card brings? If you overclock a GPU device to 32 MH/s using the Equihash algorithm, then you can earn about 10 ETH coins in 1 month. Mining on a video card, excluding electricity costs, will pay for itself in about 8 months.

Of course, this is far from the most impressive performance of any GPU available. It makes more sense to purchase a mid-priced video card, which pays for itself much faster. To finally figure out which equipment is best to buy, use the calculator.

As for the choice of cryptocurrency for this video card, several interesting options should be noted here. For example, it can be mined using Ethereum + Monero. Mining ZEC coins will also be a profitable solution. An overclocked video card mines digital currency at a speed of 790 sol/s. As a result, you can make a profit of $150 in 1 month, and the video card will pay for itself in about six months. Also, don't ignore Dash.

The global growth of the cryptocurrency market requires the use of new technologies. Nvidia, thanks to its experience and support from users, releases a modern unit called GTX1080 TI. Of course, the developers hardly took into account the fact that their creation would be used in the world of mining. But for the miners, this new product is a powerful breakthrough.

GTX 1080 ti price

It's no secret that for quick and profitable payback, GTX 1060 video cards are used. In terms of price, performance and payback, they are the best on the miner market. But still, GTX 1080 GPUs have better characteristics. Buying the TI series gives you the opportunity to invest in the distant future, because the era of the GTX 1060 may end sooner or later. Nvidia GTX 1080 TI is an improved version of the GTX 1080. The prefix “TI” (Titan) means additional power that the manufacturer has “endowed” to this device.

Video card prices start at $1,000 and above. Its predecessor, the GTX 1080, can be purchased from $675. What is the difference between the regular and Ti versions?

GTX 1080 ti performance on different algorithms

The Nvdia video card is equipped with 11 GB GDDR5X memory, with additional power. Some algorithms have not yet been optimized for this type of chip, so mining failures occur. This problem is solved with the help of video card stream processors, which in all cases increase performance and eliminate crashes. The power consumption of the GTX 1080 ti is quite high: one GPU consumes about 240-260 W. Although using the MSI Afterburner program you can reduce consumption using the “downvolting” function.

Launching a Ti series video card for testing it in mining occurs with standard settings (in stock mode). The rotation speed of the coolers is set to full power - 100%. The installed Power Limit was also in accordance with the factory requirements - 250 W, although on some types of 1080 series Ti Founders Edition the permissible limit is up to 300 W. It is worth considering that the algorithms use different video card capacities. For some it’s power consumption, and for others it’s memory overclocking. The Power Limit feature reduces GPU power consumption (which affects the performance of the first algorithms), and over a long mining period, this can save money on electricity.

The mining test on the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Ti video card showed us good results, namely: Ethereum coin algorithm = 27.8 megahash, ZEK = 614 soles, Pascal = 1510 megahash, LBRY = 437 megahash, Lyra2Rev2 = 47-49 megahash. The verification was carried out using the NiceHash program using “favorable” algorithms for our GPU. For comparison, we launched Claymore's batch file and saw new results: on DaggerHashimoto (Etherium) = 32 megahash, Equihash (ZEC) = 625 soles.

To overclock the Founders Edition GPU GTX 1080TI, we use the MSI Afterburner program and test the video card using various algorithms. Increasing the power will show how well the GPU races and what kind of revenue results we can get. This version is equipped with an additional 8-pin power supply. The factory default power consumption settings are 180 W. By updating drivers, you can increase consumption by 15-20% (for a total of 210-215 watts/hour). We set the settings to +400 megahertz for the core and +150 MHz for the memory for stable operation of the device. More extreme overclocking is not recommended. With these settings, the video card will work without artifacts and ripples.

The GPU GTX 1080 Ti test shows a good increase, namely, an increase in power gives an average of +10%. As for the Lear and NeoScript algorithms, the hashrate has not changed. On DaggerHashimoto the increase is obvious, +15%. Ethereum mining tends to increase memory power, but you can “play around” with energy consumption by reducing PowerLimit to 60%. This will not affect the performance of the video card in any way, but will help save you money on electricity.

I would like to highlight some versions of “Titanium” separately:

ASUS ROG STRIX GeForce 1080 Ti Gaming – considering the cost of the video card, mining Ethereum is not profitable. Claymore shows 32-32.5 megahash. A more suitable protocol for mining is Equihash (ZEC miner), on which the video card produces as much as 700 soles. To get the full picture, you can calculate the profitability of a given GPU taking into account the energy consumed - it will be plus/minus 4 dollars per day.

AORUS GeForce 1080 Ti – sold in two versions, which differ in backplate and factory overclocking. Its main advantage lies in a massive and properly designed cooling system. The video card elements are cooled evenly and very well. Productivity at ZEK is 680-700 soles.

Palit JetStream Super 1080 Ti is a standard and overclocked version, but unfortunately they are inferior to AORUS GPUs, since they are equipped with only 2 fans, which negatively affects the hashrate. This video card still has some of the best performance in the TI version branch.

1080 TI is the latest development from Nvidia. It is worth remembering that a 1080 video card can easily cope with the Equihash algorithm (mining the ZEC coin). A profitable and profitable option would be to mine this particular cryptocurrency.

Mining on Nvidia GTX 1080 video cards is one of the most profitable, but these cards are also more expensive than their competitors from previous series. Despite this, until the end of April, the maximum hashrate on the Ethereum network was only 25 Mh/s on 1080 and 35 Mh/s on 1080 ti. Everything changed after the development of special software that makes it possible to squeeze 40 and 55 Mh/s out of these video cards, respectively. Thus, on 1080 video cards, mining has become more universal, since the income from Zcash mining has become equal to the income from Ether mining.

Key indicators

  • Price GTX 1080: 45,000 rubles.
  • Price GTX 1080 ti: 64,000 rubles.
  • Power consumption 1080 without overclocking: 180 W.
  • Power consumption 1080 ti without overclocking: 250 W.
  • Hashrate 1080 Ethereum: 35 Mh/s.
  • Hashrate 1080 ti Ethereum: 55 Mh/s.
  • Hashrate 1080 Zcash: 290 Sol/s.

What to mine on GTX 1080

An increase in the GTX 1080/1080 ti hashrate by 40% was made possible thanks to the use of GDDR5X memory. It will be interesting to imagine what the hashrate of the GTX 2080 will be if the new series plans to use improved GDDR6 memory. Earlier versions (1070, 1060) use GDDR5 - the OhGodAnETHlargementPill is not suitable for them. An interesting fact is that this software was released two years after the release of 1080.

At the moment, the daily income of mining Ether on the GTX 1080 ti is approximately $3 per day, while mining Zcash on the same card gives $2.3. Before the tablet was released, mining ether could reward a miner with as little as two dollars a day. As for MSI 1080 mining, the choice is not obvious - Zcash and Ethereum give $2 each. The cryptocurrencies Ravencoin (RVN) – $2.1 and ZenCash – $2 look good.

Setting 1080 for mining

Let's figure out how not to ruin your video card when using OhGodAnETHlargementPill. After downloading, you need to unpack the archive and run the file, the icon of which looks like a tablet. It should be noted that the utility activates a non-standard memory usage mode, which can lead to overheating of the cards. Therefore, this tablet is not recommended for use if card cooling is poorly organized. The fact is that running this software increases the load on the memory controller to the maximum - 100% frequency. This leads to an increase in the temperature of the memory and power keys. EVGA video cards have temperature sensors on these elements, which makes it possible to adapt to changes in the memory operating mode in automatic mode. Other companies do not equip their equipment with temperature sensors for memory and power keys. For example, on the Nvidia Geforce GTX 1080, mining using a tablet can damage the equipment. To avoid overheating, you need to correctly configure the operation of the coolers in the MSI Afterburner or Thunder Master utilities.

This graph relates to the Fan Speed parameter and determines the dependence of the cooler speed on temperature. As you can see, the speed can reach up to 100% at 80 °C. Indeed, it is better to replace the fan than to burn out the power switches. If the power supply circuit fails, the video card is practically beyond repair. If repair is still possible with such a breakdown, problems may arise with the warranty department, since the video card worked in extreme mode 24/7.

The goal of overclocking is to get the highest hashrate. The goal of downvolting is to obtain minimal electricity costs with maximum hashrate. If the equipment begins to produce “artifacts” (black bars and squares on the monitor), then this is a clear sign of overclocking - the card has already failed or will soon. Other signs of incorrect overclocking are errors in the miner or a video driver crash. The Ethash algorithm requires overclocking the memory, not the core. Therefore, the Core Clock indicator can be left at zero.

The remaining parameters for overclocking 1080 for broadcast are as follows:

  1. Power Limit (%): 80. This parameter limits the maximum power consumption.
  2. Temp. Limit (°C): 73. Limits the critical temperature of the video card.
  3. Memory overclock (MHz): +400. Regulates additional load on GDDR5X memory.
  4. Fan Speed (%): 75. Responsible for the operating frequency of coolers. Set to automatic mode.
  5. The Curve is adjusted individually for each farm.

Overclocking 1080 for ZCash

The optimal 1080 overclock for ZCash looks like this:

  • Memory overclock (MHz): +600.
  • Core overclocking (MHz): +100.
  • Power Limit (%): 80.

These parameters allow you to increase the GTX 1080 hashrate when mining ZCash up to 590 Sol. With an energy consumption of 155-160 W, the efficiency will be 3.7 Sol/W.

Payback of a 1080/1080 ti mining farm in May 2018

The price of 1080 ti is approximately 64,000 rubles. Let's calculate the payback of six video cards and consider some features of assembling a 1080 ti farm. Prices:

  1. Six 1080 ti video cards - 384 thousand rubles.
  2. The cost of electricity is 3 rubles.

Buying a farm will cost 409 thousand rubles. With successful overclocking, the card can give a net profit of $3 ≈ 187 rubles per day. Based on these figures, the payback period for the farm will be 365 days. If we take into account the increase in the complexity of mining, the output of ASICs for and possible equipment failures, the payback can increase to 1.5 years or even more.

Let's calculate the payback of the GTX 1080 farm:

  • Components - 25 thousand rubles.
  • Six video cards - 270 thousand rubles (45,000 rubles - the price of one Geforce GTX 1080).
  • The cost of electricity is 3 rubles.

With a daily income of 131 rubles, such a farm will pay for itself in 344 days. As you can see, the magic pill really did a good job of raising the profitability of GTX 1080 ti mining in May 2018.

As already noted, these graphics cards must be properly cooled. If air cooling is used, then the video cards must be placed in the correct horizontal position with a cold frame, additional external coolers and a properly organized exhaust system.

To construct a frame for six video cards, the following building materials are sufficient:

  1. Angle (25-30 mm) 5 m long.
  2. Angle (20 mm) 4 m long.
  3. OSB sheet - 1 sq. m.
  4. Beam 2m long.
  5. Bolts and nuts.

The cost of such a design will not exceed 1,500 rubles. Since memory using a tablet gets very hot, it makes sense to think about immersion cooling.

Top-end GeForce GTX 1080 Ti video cards have dropped slightly in price today, which makes it possible to consider the option of such a purchase for mining.

However, according to miners, GeForce GTX 1080 Ti video cards in the medium term are inferior to the efficiency of GeForce GTX 1070, which consume half as much electricity with a relatively minor increase in performance. In the long term, these cards will be the most relevant until the release of Nvidia's Volta architecture.

The basic setup of GeForce GTX1080 Ti video cards for mining is based on the need:

  • installing the latest drivers on the motherboard and GeForce Experience from the Nvidia corporate website;
  • installing a driver package for the video card through the GeForce Experience application;
  • installing the MSI Afterburner application to overclock and configure the video card.

Overclocking GeForce GTX1080 Ti for mining

After these steps are completed, you need to start setting up each card (if you have several of them). Here are some features, but remember that even video cards from the same brand may have different capabilities for working at the edge of possibility, which is often what the mining process involves.

Settings for GeForce GTX1080 Ti video cards are indicated in relation to mining the Zcash (ZEC) cryptocurrency, which is currently the most profitable for mining. So:

GTX 1080 Ti best graphics card for mining

The video card is the most expensive in the manufacturer’s line, but it is also the most productive, and therefore the most profitable. It can mine twice as fast as the 1070 GTX. If you are thinking about which card to get - 1080 or 1080 TI - the answer is obvious! 1080 Ti gives approximately 700 sol, 1070 - 420, and 1080 gives 510-520: the profit is minimal, and the price is much higher.

This is the most profitable card for mining. "Sol" is solution per second, that is, the number of attempts to select a hash of transactions in the blockchain per second. The more powerful the video card, the more sol it produces - the faster you can make money from mining.
