SSD drives are becoming more and more popular. This is due to the fact that their reliability indicators increase, cost decreases and other parameters improve. They are perfect for installing an operating system. To avoid reinstalling the system again, let's look at how to windows transfer 10 to ssd with all data saved.

If the user decides to use an SSD as a disk to store multimedia files (audio and video files, photos), then this is a rather controversial issue. These devices have a limited rewrite limit. Active use will very quickly damage the drive. This is its main difference from HDD, which can work for more than 10 years and remain in excellent condition. But older hard drives use the SATA II interface for connection, which has a low response time and a small buffer volume. This is why users decide to purchase a solid-state drive in order to transfer Windows 10 to it.

To install the operating system, SSD drives are perfect. They have the following advantages:

  1. Low level of heat generation.
  2. Quiet operation.
  3. High read and write speed.

In addition, Windows files are static files that do not require constant rewriting; they are read-only. If you install the operating system on a solid-state drive, this will speed up its operation several times, and the device resource will be used quite slowly.

SSD selection

There are many indicators on which it depends. Let's look at the highest priority ones, on which the transfer of the system to an ssd will depend:

  1. Manufacturer.
  2. Memory type.
  3. Number of rewrite cycles before failure.

For Windows installations 10, you must select a solid-state drive size of only 120 GB or more. There are certain reasons why you should not choose 64 GB drives:

  1. To ensure normal and stable SSD operation drive, there should be up to 20% remaining on it free space of the total volume. If a 64 GB model is used (in fact, the volume will be 58 - 60 GB), then only 40 - 45 GB will be available for active use. Microsoft recommends using 16 GB of free disk space for Windows 10 for a 32-bit system and 20 GB for a 64-bit system. This will be half of the required space.
  2. When a new Windows 10 is installed or an existing one is updated, a copy of the old operating system will remain on the system hard drive, which is used for recovery. This adds another 15 – 20 GB.
  3. Users, in addition to browsers and video players, use various utilities and programs. There will be a lot of space required for their installation. If the user processes video or likes to spend time computer games, then it will require even more memory on the system disk.

Let's look at transferring Windows 10 to an SSD using the example of a drive. solid state type Kingston HyperX Savage 120GB:

  1. Turning off the computer. It must be disconnected from the network by unplugging the plug from the socket. The computer is completely de-energized in 4 seconds; to do this, you need to press and then hold the power button.
  2. You need to open the case and install the solid state drive. The new cases have bays where you can install an SSD in a 2.5-inch form factor. It is not available on older models, so you must have a suitable adapter frame.
  3. Connecting the SATA cable and power to the solid-state drive. Closing the case.
  4. Now you need to turn on the computer and go into the BIOS. It sets the AHCI operating mode for the SSD drive. The changes are saved and you can launch Windows 10.
  5. Click right click Click on Start and select Disk Management.
  6. The connected SSD drive will be displayed at the bottom of the table. It will be marked in black and labeled “Not distributed.”
  7. Right-click on the solid-state drive, select “Create simple volume”, click “Next”.
  8. We set the maximum size of a simple volume and click “Next” again.
  9. Select the volume letter and click “Next”.
  10. Now you need to set the switch to the “Format this volume...” section. Leave all values as default, click “Next” and “Finish”.

Now the new drive with the selected letter will be displayed in Explorer.

Transferring Windows 10

If you don’t know how to transfer Windows 10 to an SSD, then first you need to install the Acronis True Image program. This software has large number functions. Some SSD drives come with a key free activation programs. The software itself is paid, so it is not suitable for everyone.

There are other programs (free and paid) that transfer a partition from Windows to other drives:

  1. Paragon Drive Copy is paid program with the widest functionality.
  2. Macrium Reflect is a free software for the ssd cloning process with an English-language interface.
  3. Samsung Data Migration - used to work with Samsung SSDs.
  4. Seagate DiscWizard – works when installing a Seagate drive.

All programs have an excellent interface, but use the same operating algorithm. They transfer data from one disk to another while maintaining all settings. There is no need to study instructions for their operation; they are made at an intuitive level for users.

We perform the following actions:

  1. Launching Acronis True Image. Then go to the “Tools” menu and select “Clone Disk”.
  2. The cloning mode is selected: manually and automatically. In order not to worry about making mistakes, you can choose automatic mode. In this case, the software itself will transfer all information from one disk to another. SSD drive must have a volume no less than the volume of files contained on the HDD. To configure the transfer parameters, select manual setting. Let's choose manual settings in our example.
  3. Now the source disk from which data will be cloned is indicated.
  4. Select a drive to transfer files to.
  5. We exclude files that are not needed when cloning hdd to ssd. To transfer, you will only need files with the operating system, so we select them. The process of calculating information will last a long time from 15 to 20 minutes.
  6. If necessary, we change the disk structure.
  7. We look through all the initial data and click “Proceed”.

When the preliminary operations are completed, the software will ask you to restart the computer. Then, instead of loading the operating system, the Acronis True Image utility window will open, where the cloning process will be displayed hard drive on ssd. You must wait until the operation is completed, after which personal computer will be turned off.

Selecting the main drive in BIOS

We carry out the following points:

  1. Turn on the computer and enter the BIOS.
  2. You need to set the computer to boot from a solid state drive. This is necessary to operating system booted from a cloned disk with Windows 10. Then we save the changes and launch Windows.

Setting up the OS after the migration process

After transferring the system to the ssd, you need to check the following parameters:

  1. Is file indexing disabled?
  2. Is disk defragmentation disabled? It is not required due to the way solid-state drives operate.
  3. Is the TRIM function enabled?

If we consider the hibernation file, many users advise disabling it to reduce the amount of information written to the SSD disk, which will significantly extend its operating time. If you often use this mode, then you don’t have to turn it off.

When cloning data, in the settings you can specify the creation of the same hard drives that were on the HDD. Let's look at the process of merging them using the Disk Management utility:

  1. Right-click on “Start”, select “Disk Management”, then select “SSD drive”.
  2. Right-click on an empty disk and select “Format.”
  3. RMB on this disk, select the “Delete volume” section, confirm the deletion.
  4. RMB on this disk, click on “Delete partition”, confirms the operation.
  5. Repeat similar actions with the remaining free disks. Unallocated space will appear, which is marked in black.
  6. RMB on the disk where the operating system is located, select “Extend volume”, click “Next”.
  7. We indicate the maximum free space indicator, click “Next” and “Finish”.

Delete Windows files 10, which are placed on the HDD by formatting of this disk. This will ensure there is no confusion in the future and will also free up space for storing information.

Conclusions

The table provides information on certain points before and after transferring Windows 10 to an SSD:

Using the Winaero WEI tool utility, you can calculate the performance of the operating system. After the Windows 10 port, the “Primary Hard Drive” indicator was increased from 5.6 to 7.95.

It turns out that Windows performance has increased. The software started to launch faster, and the time for rebooting and copying files was reduced. Overall, the system's responsiveness has increased significantly.

If you need to transfer installed Windows 10 to an SSD (or simply to another drive) when purchasing a solid-state drive or in another situation, this can be done in several ways, all of them involve the use of third-party software, and then free programs will be considered that allow you to transfer the system to a solid-state drive, and it will also be shown step by step. exactly how to do this.

First of all, we demonstrated tools that allow you to copy Windows 10 to an SSD without errors. modern computers and laptops with UEFI support and the system installed on a GPT disk (not all utilities work smoothly in this situation, although they cope well with MBR disks).

Note: If you do not need to transfer all your programs and data from old tough disk, you can also simply perform a clean installation of Windows 10 by creating a distribution in advance, for example, bootable USB flash drive. A key will not be required during installation - if you are installing the same edition of the system (Home, Professional) that was on this computer, click “I don’t have a key” during installation and after connecting to the Internet, the system is activated automatically, despite the fact that it is now installed on an SSD.

Transfer Windows 10 to SSD in Macrium Reflect

Free for home use within 30 days, Macrium Reflect disk cloning software, albeit on English, which can create difficulties for a novice user, allows you to transfer the installed installation to GPT disk Windows 10 on SSD.

In the example below, Windows 10 will be transferred to another disk, located on the following partition structure (UEFI, GPT disk).

The process of copying the operating system to a solid-state drive will look like this (note: if the program does not see the newly purchased SSD, initialize it in Windows disk management - Win + R, enter diskmgmt.msc and then right-click on the displayed new disk and initialize it):

After downloading and running the Macrium Reflect installation file, select Trial and Home and click Download. More than 500 megabytes will be downloaded, after which the installation of the program will start (in which you just need to click “Next”).
After installation and the first launch, you will be asked to make an emergency recovery disk (flash drive) - here it is at your discretion. There were no problems in my several tests. In the program, on the “Create a backup” tab, select the disk on which the installed system and under it click “Clone this disk”.
On the next screen, check the partitions that need to be transferred to the SSD. Usually all the first partitions (recovery environment, bootloader, factory recovery image) and the system partition with Windows 10 (drive C).
In the same window below, click “Select a disk to clone to” (select the disk to clone to) and indicate your SSD. The program will display exactly how contents of hard disk will be copied to the SSD. In my example, to test it, I specifically made a disk onto which less than the original one is copied, and also created an “extra” partition at the beginning of the disk (this is how factory recovery images are implemented). When transferring, the program automatically reduced the size of the last partition so that it fit on the new disk (and warns about this with the message “The last partition has been shrunk to fit”). Click Next.
You will be asked to create a schedule for the operation (if you are automating the process of copying the system state), but a regular user, with the only task of transferring the OS, can simply click “Next”. Information will be displayed about what operations will be performed to copy the system to the SSD. Click Finish, in the next window - “Ok”.
Once the copying is complete, you will see the message “Clone completed” and the time it took (do not rely on my numbers from the screenshot - this is clean, without Windows programs 10, which is transferred from SSD to SSD, will most likely take you longer).

This completes the process: now you can turn off your computer or laptop, and then leave only the SSD with the transferred Windows 10, or reboot the computer and change the order of the drives in the BIOS and boot from the SSD (and, if everything works, use the old drive for storage data or other tasks). The final structure after the transfer looks (in my case) like in the screenshot below.

You can download Macrium Reflect for free from the official website http://macrium.com/ (in the Download Trial - Home section).

EaseUS ToDo Backup Free

The free version of EaseUS Backup also allows you to successfully copy your installed Windows 10 to an SSD along with recovery partitions, bootloader and the laptop or computer manufacturer's factory image. And it also works without problems for UEFI GPT systems (although there is one nuance that is described at the end of the description of the system transfer).

The steps to transfer Windows 10 to SSD in this program are also quite simple:

Done: you can now boot your computer from the SSD (by changing the UEFI / BIOS settings accordingly or disabling the HDD) and enjoy the speed Windows boot 10. In my case, no problems with the work were identified. However, strangely, the partition at the beginning of the disk (simulating the factory recovery image) grew from 10 GB to something like 13 GB.

In the event that there are few methods given in the article, you are simply interested additional features and programs for transferring the system (including in Russian and specialized for Samsung, Seagate and WD disks), and also if Windows 10 is installed on an MBR disk on an old computer, you can read another material on this topic.

Good day, readers of my blog.

SSD drives are becoming more and more popular every year among ordinary users computer. This was achieved thanks to a significant reduction in price and an increase in basic characteristics. Exactly this type equipment is in great demand as a device on which the operating system is installed. But in order not to waste time restoring all functionality again, you can simply transfer Windows 10 to an SSD. This procedure will allow you to restore system functionality in the shortest possible time. At the same time, all functionality will be fully preserved. But unlike working with a HDD, the system speed will increase noticeably.

It’s worth saying right away that transferring photos, video files or music from HDD to SSD is not entirely correct use. The fact is that the latter have a limited rewrite limit. And obviously active frequent rewriting can damage it. But the same cannot be said about standard hard drives, because they serve for a long time, and at the same time remain in excellent condition. At the same time, regular hard drives have a relatively small clipboard - this significantly increases the response time of programs. That’s why many people purchase new drives to transfer the operating system to them.

Windows 10 on an SSD is a great combination as it has many advantages, including:

    High speed of information processing.

    Low heat generation.

At the same time, the operating system consists of files that do not require constant updating - they are only read. Therefore, after installing Win on a solid-state drive, the work will speed up significantly and the device’s resource will be consumed slowly.

How to choose?( )

During SSD selection, it is important to pay attention to several basic parameters:

    possible number of rewrite times;

    memory type;

    manufacturing company.

It must be said right away that if you are going to install the tenth version of the OS from Microsoft on an SSD on a laptop or PC, it is better to choose models from 120 GB. There are devices from 64 GB, but it is better not to consider them as the main device. And this is confirmed by several reasons:

That is why the solid state drive for the operating system should not be less than 120 GB.

Connection and setup( )

So, let's proceed directly to the process itself:

After that, in the section " Computer"You will be able to see the new device under the letter we specified.

OS transfer( )

There are a lot of programs for completely moving the operating system from one disk to another. They are both free and offered for money. Generally speaking, the software differs only appearance. At the same time, the operating algorithm is almost identical. Each of them simply clones the existing system onto another storage device. Therefore, there is no need to study the operating instructions for all of them - just get acquainted with one of them. At the same time, the interface is intuitive throughout, which allows almost any user to do everything that is necessary.

Software that is suitable for cloning:

Well, as you can see, there are a lot of programs that allow you to transfer information from one device to another. It is worth noting that the OS itself does not provide for cloning to an SSD using Windows. Therefore, you need to use third-party applications.

Transfer process( )

In order not to talk about each software separately, I will introduce you to the system from Acronis. First you need to find a program. It is worth immediately noting that a special key must come with it. Without it, functionality will be limited. To download this application take advantage of my course called

So, to make a clone of your existing disk, you need to make a few movements:

After all the preliminary steps are completed, the program will ask you to reboot your device. Then the Acronis application menu will appear on the screen, showing the copying process. When the process is completed, the computer will automatically turn off.

Disk selection( )

After everything is finished, you need to set it so that Windows will now start from the solid-state drive:

Turn on the computer and go into the BIOS.

We go to the menu in which the loading order is set. We indicate the disk on which we now have a clone. You can find out how to set the disk loading order.

    We save and exit.

The article is relevant during all versions of the OS, but if in XP it was possible to copy the entire windows folder and transferred to a new medium and through simple manipulations everything started to work, then transferring Windows 10 to ssd disk not so simple - since the license is tied to the hardware. The question may arise why you need to switch to a solid-state disk, the answer is simple:

  • Read and write speed is very high;
  • work occurs in silent mode (silent);
  • low heating level, as heat generation is minimal.

Since there are many options, let’s look at how to install Window’s 10 on an SSD drive by transferring it using different means.

HDD → SSD-disk: Windows tools

Naturally we can't get around standard means window's and contact third parties directly software products, so transferring Windows 10 to an SSD disk is possible using backup and restore. Let's get started.

  • Right-click “Start” → “Control Panel”
  • “Backup_and_restore” → here select “Create_system_image”

Select a solid-state disk to burn the image and before starting to boot the OS from a fresh image, you must physically disconnect the hard disk so that there are no conflicts after starting Windows. If you plan to use your hard disk in the future, be sure to format it and delete all partitions, including hidden ones.

Transition to ssd'shnik with GPT standard

What to do when a beginner needs to painlessly transfer Windows 10 from a hdd to a gpt standard ssd - you need to install the program and carry out your plans with a few clicks. So, Macrium Reflect is a free trial license for home use for 30 days, the big advantage is that errors are excluded, but there is a nuance - the program is not Russified.

I would like to make a reservation right away if Windows 10 does not display the installed new ssd disk – it needs to be initialized, we do it as follows:

  • +[R] → enter “diskmgmt.msc” without quotes → ok.

  • Right-click on the unallocated disk → “Initialize”

The screw is already displayed and we need to start transferring the Windows 10 system from hdd to ssd. Launch Macrium Reflect and then everything is intuitively simple, when you first start the program it will offer to create a recovery tool - emergency media (disk or flash drive), here you can do as you wish, we will skip this step:

  • check the box “Don’t ask me again” - don’t ask again → “No”

  • go to the “Create_a_backup” tab - to creation backup copy→ select the disk with the OS → click “Clone_this_disk” - this is how we start cloning the hard drive

  • Next, you need to mark all the partitions that need to be transferred, do not forget about the bootloader, recovery image, system partition, etc.
  • A little lower, click on “Select_a_disk_to_clone_to..” → select the ssd

  • For the purity of the experiment, they specified a disk with a volume smaller than required and made sure to create an additional partition at the beginning of the disk - using the standard factory settings as an example.

  • The program automatically shortened the last partition and displayed the message “The_last_partition_has_been_shrunk_to_fit” - literally translated “The last partition was shortened to fit”
  • We click “Next” without consent to create a schedule for the operation, we have no need for this, after which the window will contain information about what actions will be performed.

  • “Finish” → ok.

Once completed, depending on your needs, you can either remove the screw or leave it to store data - pre-formatted, such as movies, music, photos - since this is the type of file that is not recommended to be kept on solid-state drives. Restart the system and set the default to boot from the new disk - the process of migrating to ssd Windows 10 OS is completed.

SSD squared!

This is a funny title for a reason; we will transfer the Windows 10 system from ssd to ssd using the almost universal program Acronis True Image WD Edition.

The installation happens quite quickly and without any particular difficulties, we launch the software and get started, but first go to management windows disks 10 and check whether the system sees the disk ssd - if it doesn’t, check that the connection and initialization are correct.

  • “Tools” → “Clone_disk”

  • “Clone_mode” → “Select manually” → “Next”

  • Select “Source_disk” - our OS screw → “Next”

  • We assign “Target_disk” - our second ssd-disk → “Next”

After this step, we will find ourselves in the “Exclude_files” window, here we will select the files that we do not need. In addition, on next step, if necessary, you can change the structure of the disk, then check all the positions - if everything is correct, click “Proceed”, after which a reboot will be required and instead of the usual one, a program window with the cloning process will open. After completion, your PC will be turned off, then turn it on and in the bios select the default boot from the ssd disk, here is another simple method that I described - how you can transfer window’s 10 to an ssd on a laptop

Windows clone from hard drive to ssd (mbr)

Transferring the Windows 10 operating system to a solid-state drive can be done using a considerable number of programs; it is not possible to review all of them in one article - so now we will pay attention to another fairly common and simple one - Aomei Partition Assistant Standard Edition. The software has a free license, is Russified, but, like everything, it has a nuance, it is suitable for versions of Windows starting from version seven, it supports BIOS, Legacy boot and UEFI, but only on an mbr disk.

After installation, launch the program and follow step by step:

  • “Transfer_OS_SSD_or_HDD” → in the “Next” dialog box

  • Select the disk to which we will clone Windows and check the box “I_want_to_delete_all...” → “Next”

The next window will warn you that after transferring the system, you will be able to boot from the new screw. If this does not happen, simply enter the BIOS when booting and change the boot priority.

  • Click “Finish” → then “Apply” in the upper left part of the main window → “Go”

  • We are waiting for the process to complete.

Here's how else you can transfer the Windows 10 operating system from hdd to ssd.

Possible errors!

Let's look at the types of errors that can occur.

Error one - ssd-disk is not detected in windows 10 - there can be 2 reasons, with the exception of physical damage:

  1. The disk is not initialized, in this case we use the instructions described above for working with “Disk Management”.
  2. A new solid-state drive must be installed instead of the old hard drive, but we connect the last one as an additional one - either instead of a disk drive (if a laptop), or with an additional cable (if a system unit)

Second mistake - after windows installations 10 on ssd system the old hdd does not see - to eliminate the reason, initially open “Disk Management” and see if it is visible.

  1. If yes, there may be a letter conflict - this can be resolved through the console by assigning a new label and formatting.
  2. The reason may be a conflict if you did not disconnect the hdd before the cloning process.
  3. There may be insufficient power or the cable is damaged.

Error three - the computer does not see the ssd disk with windows 10 - when you turn on the black screen without the ability to start, the reason may be that you did not assign it to boot device priority his first.

After cloning Windows, the following articles will be useful.

In this tutorial we will show you how you can transfer Windows 10 and all installed data to a new one hard drive. The same process can be applied when transferring data to an SSD. We will be migrating from a 250 GB hard drive to a 1 TB drive. Below in the picture is my main disk, which contains the operating system and all My files. 1 TB is also installed. To see this we have to go to Disk Management because it is not formatted. So, click on This PC->Manage->Disk Management. As we can see, the 1 TB disk is not even initialized. In this case, make sure there is a boot entry and click OK to initialize.

Our source disk is disk 0 which is my 250 GB hard drive. It contains my operating system and all data. Disk 1 is the destination disk. We will clone everything on this disk. Also, make sure the target drive is empty, and if you have information there, make sure you do backup, because the destination drive will be overwritten by the information from the source drive, in this case drive 0. With this set, we go ahead and need to close Disk Management here.

So, for this tutorial we will use Paragon Hard Disk Manager Premium. This program is no longer free. You can probably download it for free, but you won't be able to clone it. This is the program that is used; this program does not slow down the operating system, like most free programs, which we used before. So once you have it installed, go ahead and launch it.

Click on Transfer Operating System and read the following Note carefully.

The target disk will be replaced with information from the source. Click Next and now it is automatically recognized by the operating system and the wizard itself will tell you that it is going to copy the operating system Windows system 10 64 edition which is located on drive C which uses 16 GB on a 250 GB hard drive for a 1 TB drive.

Remember that both drives in this case are serial ATA. Now you can also choose which folders to copy, but by default all folders will be selected. Now check the “use all available space for the OS partition” checkbox. If you don't check the icon, it will create a smaller partition on the larger drive. If you don't know anything about a section, make sure to check the mark. Then click the copy button.

The copying process may take some time depending on how much information needs to be copied there. Once this is done, make sure to read it.

We intend to summarize it for you. You have two options.

Using the first one, you can delete the source drive as soon as the cloning is done and keep the drive as your primary drive. Second: you can go into the BIOS and select the target disk first boot device. In our case, we deleted the original disk. Go ahead and click the close button.

After this, we must restart the computer under Windows control 10, remove the source disk and save to the destination disk, which is 1 TB. However, if you want to keep booting from it, then select the target drive as the first boot device in the BIOS.

Now, as you can see, it’s a normal reboot and it’s as if nothing happened and it’s loading from the new hard drive. You can click on my computer and you will notice that you are using a 1TB drive rather than a 250GB drive.

All your data and operating system are activated and ready to go.

That's it. If you have any questions, feel free to leave them in the comments section below.
