Updates are one of the most important parts of Windows 10. Microsoft is releasing patches for its operating system every second Tuesday of the month. But what if you need to manually install updates for Windows 10? If, for example, one of your devices is not connected to an unlimited network, or you cannot start the installation of a new build through the Update Center?

How to download updates for Windows 10 manually

There is a special site where Microsoft uploads the installers of all updates. Absolutely any user can download updates for Windows 10 without the update center. This does not require registration or anything else.

Immediately, we note that the update installation file also contains all the earlier changes for this version of the system. That is, there is no need to download and install build 14393.576, and then 14393.970 - all you need to do is download and install only update 14393.970. But keep in mind that this principle works only within the framework of one version of the system (1507, 1511, 1607, 1703) - it is impossible to download the installation file 14393.970 and use it to upgrade to this version of the system from 10586.63.

How to manually install Windows 10 updates

Microsoft provides installation files for updates in the format MSU... Windows 10 supports upgrading with these packages without performing any additional operations. You just need to run the downloaded MSU file.

In the summer, many people leave the cities for places where the Internet is available only with a 4G modem. In this case, saving traffic is very important, and regular installation of Windows updates can cost a pretty penny.

Today I will tell you how to take control Windows updates 10 and explain how to download everything you need on your home PC for further installation on the "summer cottage".

Today in the program

History of the issue

Basically, if you select the option "download and install notification", the system will write what updates it lacks. On the other hand, this option, although it greatly reduces WU traffic, does not disable it. Therefore, since your goal is to maximize savings, and you decide to update the system with the updates brought, it makes sense to completely disable WU.

I also posted on Telegram a guide on how to set up deferred delivery of Windows updates and builds. I am embedding here together with the REG file in ZIP.

What updates come through the Windows Update channel

The easiest way to explain this is with an example. I installed clean Windows 10 (version 1511) from an ISO I downloaded four months ago, and this is what was suggested for installation.

  • Cumulative updates... In Windows 10, unlike previous systems, the bulk of updates (including security fixes) are delivered in cumulative updates. They are released approximately once a month and replace previously released updates, if necessary (in the example, this is KB3154132). It is the cumulative updates that greatly simplify the task of keeping the PC up-to-date with the WU turned off.
  • Other OS updates... There are not many of them, and in my case only one is offered - KB3140741, which updates Windows. Without such updates, one can live [in the country house], otherwise they would be included in the first category. However, a stack update may become required to install a new version of Windows 10.
  • Windows Defender Updates, MSRT and Flash Player ... With the first two, everything is clear, but it is not entirely clear what prevents Flash Player updates from being included in cumulative packages. Flash may need to be updated more often than once a month.

There are still driver updates available, but I'm assuming that they are installed on the target PC and that it works stably.

So on Windows 10, the task is to download the latest rollup, Flash Player update, and Windows Defender / MSRT signatures. Let's download!

How to download required updates

All Windows updates can be downloaded from the Microsoft catalog. The latest defender signatures are posted on the malware protection website.

Step 1 - Determine the OS version and bitness

We are talking about the target system - the one on which the updates will be installed. Options → System → About.

Step 2 - Download OS, Flash Player and MSRT updates

Go to the directory Microsoft updates and search for the OS name along with the version and bitness, for example, Windows 10 1809 x64. This will give you updates Windows(cumulative, service stack, .NET) and Flash Player.

To find the latest version MSRT, search for removal tool and sort by date, displaying the latest results at the top.

Step 3 - Download the Windows Defender Signature Update

In order not to rummage through the directory, go to the Malware Protection Center website and download the file for offline installation (Windows Defender in Windows 10 and Windows 8.1). Direct links:

The March update package for all editions of the Windows 10 software platform is already available in the Windows Update Center. As usually happens in such cases, the developers add to the cumulative updates a list of fixed bugs and problems, as well as patches for existing vulnerabilities.

For computers with Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (1709), the distribution of the update package has started, which passes under the technical index KB4088776. After installing the update, the build number of the software platform will increase to 16299.309. The following key changes and innovations are listed on the corporation's official resource:

A bug has been fixed that caused the browser to stop working Internet Explorer if using the F12 developer tools;

After cooperating with the creators of antivirus software, Microsoft decided to stop checking antivirus software for compatibility with Windows updates, despite the fact that the requirements for compatibility with antivirus software remained the same. Computers on which incompatible anti-virus programs are installed may not wait for the arrival of updates. The issue is related to Specter and Meltdown, as well as the fact that third-party antivirus programs use undocumented Windows features;

The developers have prepared a security update for Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge, Microsoft Scripting Engine, Windows Desktop Bridge, Windows Kernel, Windows Shell, Windows MSXML, Device Guard, Windows Hyper-V, Windows Installer and Microsoft Scripting Engine.

In addition, the developers are reporting some existing problems that they promise to solve in the near future. In particular, the problems concern: a failure in Windows Update, due to which the user received a notification about the failure to install the update, while it was successfully installed. There is also another error that refers to the failure to manually install updates, and this error concerns the version of Windows 10 for corporations. In addition, the official Microsoft Support resource has published a list of update changes for Creators Update (1703) - KB4088782 (15063.966), Anniversary Update (1607) - KB4088787 (14393.2125) and November Update (1511) - KB4088779 (10586.1478).

Despite the fact that Windows 10 has been on the market for quite some time, it is still considered a "young" operating system. The developers are working on its improvements every day to make the user experience more comfortable. All the changes made, no matter how useful they are, are carefully packaged and come to the computer in the form of constant updates, so it is so important to know what they are and how to install them correctly.

Do I need to update Windows 10

The question of the need for Windows updates has always been acute, and there are good reasons for this. There is still no consensus, so all the pros and cons must be considered before deciding whether to upgrade the system.

Why you don't need to update Windows 10

The meaningfulness of updates for the line of Windows operating systems has always been questionable.

When it comes to operating rooms Windows systems 7, 8 and 8.1, then almost all updates did not bring anything new or made changes to functions that were unclaimed for ordinary users. With the release of Windows 10, this tradition has been partially preserved. Most updates to this OS add only new corporate, server and other narrowly focused functions, as well as fix old and add new small bugs.

Windows 10 updates take a long time to install and require a computer restart. This would be okay if they came out less often than once every two weeks. For the most part, Microsoft's corporate policy is to blame for this frequency, thanks to which everything new is immediately packed and sent to work without thorough checking and testing.

Windows 10 updates take a long time to install at the most inopportune moment

Windows 10 doesn't ask users if they need an update or not, and installs everything automatically on system reboot. This can take the user by surprise when they decide to reboot their computer quickly. Some Windows 10 updates can take up to two hours to install, depending on device specifications. In addition, downloading them can eat up all Internet traffic, and sometimes computer resources.

Also in Windows 10 there is such a thing as ads. And on free versions systems, it is often accompanied by the forced installation of unpopular and low-grade software from Microsoft. Updates for advertising services are also included in the general Windows update.

Why you need to update Windows 10

It is imperative to install the first update immediately after installing the system. The fact is that there are many more varieties of Windows 10 than it might seem at first glance.

First, a generic non-personalized version of the system is installed. After installing the drivers and the first update, the OS changes to the version that most closely matches the hardware configuration, which can improve the overall performance of Windows 10 and its compatibility with your computer.

Now let's talk about the advantages of regularly updating Windows 10. You've probably heard about the spyware features of this system. In many ways, these services work with a single purpose: collecting and sending statistics to the center technical support... This allows developers to monitor Windows work 10 on different computers and in different conditions in order to regularly improve the system through the release of updates. It is through the active collection of information that some Windows 10 updates are truly valuable and make the user experience more comfortable.

Separately, it should be said about the security system update. Every second Windows 10 update brings improved system protection against viruses and other external threats.

Taking into account the high activity of ransomware and cyber attacks, the update of security systems is relevant recently. Even if the computer has good antivirus that you fully trust does not provide guaranteed protection against threats aimed at vulnerabilities in Windows itself.

Windows 10 general update includes vulnerability fixes and security updates

Windows 10 updates are especially important for owners of older hardware. After Windows installations 10 most drivers are downloaded automatically: this procedure often includes some compatibility improvements to further ensure the best performance of your computer. Unfortunately, Microsoft's database is far from complete, which is especially true for outdated hardware. But such information is collected very quickly, and with the next update, a package may come, designed exclusively for one of the computer components.

All kinds of Windows 10 updates and misconceptions associated with them

By "updating the operating system", many users sometimes mean completely different things. To avoid confusion, for a start it is worth taking a closer look at a couple of points: what is an update, what it can be, and what it cannot.

The confusion over the types of updates is pretty serious. It arose due to inaccurate translation of English words into Russian. For example, version is the version, edition is the version, build is the version, and the like.

Table: what is called "Windows 10 Update"

Upgrading to Windows 10 (Version update)Also, this procedure is often referred to as "Upgrading to Windows 10" or "Upgrading Windows", which sounds very ambiguous. Moving to Windows 10 means upgrading from Windows 7 (or 8, or 8.1) to Windows 10. This is the only procedure that literally translates to "Version Upgrade".
Windows 10 also has an internal division into versions, for example, version 1607. Such versions are updated through Windows Update. In fact, this is an update to the assembly, which is called version for beauty.
The upgrade to Windows 10 can be done through the Windows10Upgrade utility, which is described below.
Change edition / edition of Windows (Edition update)Microsoft also refers to this procedure as "Windows Update". Literally it translates as "Edition update". A change of edition means, for example, an upgrade from Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Professional, or another “tariff change”.
The article below explains how to do this.
Windows 10 Build updateThe correct name for this procedure is "Build Update". However, when many users say "Update Windows 10", they mean it, so we will refer to this procedure as that in the following.
An assembly update means updating Windows 10. The main way is automatic update Windows through the "Update Center". However, there are others, which will be discussed below.
Updating Windows Additional Resources Includes everything that is an important application to the system, but is not officially part of it. This includes security features, components, some services, firmware, and more. When Windows 10 says it is updating, most of the time it is referring to the resource update. In Windows 10, it is almost inseparable from the build update, so it should be considered part of the "Windows 10 Update".

What is meant by "Windows 10 Update"

Windows Update is responsible for updating the system in Windows 10. When it starts, it automatically checks for new assemblies and additional resources, and if something is found, it starts downloading and installing immediately. There are other ways to start an update, but the procedure is always the same.

Windows 10 Update is Windows 10 Build Update plus Windows Additional Resources Update. This procedure is indivisible and the only possible option updating your system.

Updating Windows 10 means updating the operating system and some of its components

There are no ways to update

Due to various misconceptions and user memory about Windows 7, you can very often find mention of update methods that do not actually exist.

Selective update

Many users mistakenly believe that Selective System Updates are acceptable in Windows 10. Once upon a time, there was indeed information that Microsoft would make such an opportunity for owners of the release of Windows 10 Professional. However, this idea has not been continued, and no choice is expected for users in the near future.

All updates for Windows 10 are downloaded as a single package, and there is no way to separate what you need from the rest. There are also no special programs or utilities to implement this function. And although there are ways to update the system to a certain version, excluding the subsequent ones, it will not work to choose what to install from this update and what not.

All updates for Windows 10 are packaged in one package that cannot be separated in any way

Manual update

Manual Windows 10 update can be considered a synonym for selective: that is what it implies. Windows 10 only has automatic updates that you can manually start. It's just that it either starts itself, or at the request of the user, and Windows 10 is always updated the same way.

A manual update can be called an offline update via an MSU file downloaded from the Microsoft update catalog

Upgrade to Game Mode

Game mode is enabled in the settings:

  1. Click on the "Start" button and click on the gear-shaped icon to open the "Options".

Click on the "Start" button and click on the gear to open the "Options"

  2. In the window that appears, click on "Games".

In the window that appears, click on "Games"

  3. On the left side of the window, click on "Game Mode" and activate the only switch.

On the left side of the window, click on "Game Mode" and activate the only switch

If you don't have a game mode in the settings, just update the system using any of the suggested methods and try again.

Installing a specific update

It is recommended that you only download the latest Windows 10 update, which is what the system itself does. Any service pack is fully installed and includes changes from all previous OS updates. You won't be able to skip a specific update.

Service packs include changes from all previous ones, if they were not excluded by newer ones. Also if problems occur after upgrading to latest version, you can upgrade to any previous one. How to do this is described in the chapter "Upgrading to a Specific Version". However, remember that any subsequent update of the system will revert all changes back.

How much updates weigh and how long does it take to install

Update Center downloads only the most recent update, which is sufficient to update the operating system. Several packages are downloaded simultaneously only if the internal version of Windows 10 is changed. In this case, their weight is summed up. The updates themselves do not accumulate in any way, but simply replace each other. Their sizes are approximately 500 MB for x86 systems and 1 GB for x64 systems.

After applying the changes, the service pack itself is removed, but the size free space on the hard disk will change:

  • the size of the operating system can change within 1 GB up or down (the weight of the update itself does not affect this);
  • on the C drive, the update cache will remain, which by its weight is 50–80% of the update itself.

The update cache is designed to restore the system in case of failure. Usually it is removed on its own after a while if there is not enough free disk space. The update cache is located at C: \ Windows \ SoftwareDistribution \. This is the only trace left. To remove it, you need to disable "Update Center" and start the system in safe mode... How to do both is described in the chapter "How to stop updating Windows 10".

Removing the update cache will not harm the system in any way

The time it will take for the system to update is difficult to predict, since it depends on the capabilities of the computer and the speed of the Internet. The update can take anywhere from 15 minutes to two hours.

If you run the update check yourself, the weight of the update will be shown before downloading it. If the system starts the process itself, and there is little space on the computer, it will notify the user about this. The table below shows the sizes of the latest service packs for all internal versions of Windows 10 that the system will load.

How to update Windows 10

Typically, a Windows 10 update is launched without the user's knowledge. Either the system receives a message about the appearance of something new, or it checks for updates on a timer on its own. If the information about the availability of updates is confirmed, they will start downloading in the background, and the user will only know about this after restarting the computer.

However, you can also request an update check yourself.

The main way

The easiest way to run the scan is through Windows Update, which is located in the Options window.

  1. Click on the "Start" button and open "Settings" by clicking on the gear icon.

Click on the "Start" button and open "Settings" by clicking on the gear

  2. In the window that opens, click on "Update and Security".

In the window that opens, click on "Update and Security"

  3. Click on the "Check for Updates" button.

Click on the "Check for Updates" button

Through the "Command Line" (forced)

Checking for updates can be disabled through various settings systems. If this is the case, you will not be able to update in a general way. In this case, you should use the "Command Line" to force the search for updates to start.

Through utilities

Windows 10 can also be updated via special programs designed for just this purpose.

The utilities will not provide special features. They do not contain the updates themselves, but only redirect the system to the Microsoft server to search for them.

Both applications described below are located on the official Microsoft website in the "Software Downloads" section.

Utilities for updating Windows 10 can be downloaded from the official Microsoft website

Media Creation Tool

Windows10Upgrade (+ upgrade to Windows 10)

It is even easier here, since in the application itself you have to press only one button, but it will be installed on your computer. It also allows you to upgrade to Windows 10 from 8.1 and earlier.

Download the application from the official Microsoft website, run it as administrator and click "Update Now".

Run Windows10Upgrade as administrator and click "Upgrade Now"

Upgrading to a specific version

These methods can also be thought of as upgrading without an internet connection. They differ from the previous ones in that now the search for the current version of Windows 10 will be carried out not on the Microsoft server, but on the Windows 10 image or a special file.

Through ISO image

Via CAB or MSU file

Files with the CAB and MSU format are special Windows 10 updates that are designed to update systems that do not have access to the Internet. You can download them from the official Microsoft website. The update files should open like regular .exe files, but if this does not happen, they can be launched through the "Command line".

Run Command Prompt as administrator and enter one of the following commands:

Change Windows 10 edition (no reinstallation and no data loss)

Changing the edition of Windows 10 is possible only for a more "expensive" version of the system. If you want, for example, to change Enterprise to Professional, only a complete reinstallation of the system will help you: Enterprise is the most expensive edition. But from the Home version, the transition is more than possible.

  1. Click on the "Start" button and click on the gear to go to "Options".

Click on the "Start" button and click on the gear to go to "Options"

  2. In the window that opens, click on the "Update and Security" section.

Click on the "Update and Security" section

  3. On the left side of the window, select Activation and click Change Product Key.

Select the Activation tab and click Change Product Key

  4. Enter one of the following keys (conditional keys: they allow you to change the version, but do not activate it):
  5. If the update does not start automatically, select Windows Update on the left side of the window and click Check for Updates.

Select the "Winodws Update Center" tab and click "Check for Updates"

How to stop Windows 10 update

If you need to urgently interrupt a Windows 10 update that has begun, quickly disconnect your Internet connection. Now you need to run "Command Prompt" as administrator and enter the following commands one by one: net stop wuauserv, net stop bits and net stop dosvc.

Open the "Start" menu, search for "cmd", click on " Command line"Right-click and select" Run as administrator "

If you want to prevent downloading updates, the easiest way to do this is through services.

  1. Open the "Start" menu, type "services.msc" and run the found utility.

Expand the Troubleshoot tab and select your problem

Regular updating of Windows 10 is a useful thing, but not always convenient. Nevertheless, periodic updates for this system are almost vital. It is better to endure an hour-long system update once again than to try to cope with more serious computer problems later.

In this article, we will answer the question, how to update Windows 10 features and install cumulative updates... The presence on the computer not only of the latest version of the operating system, but also of all relevant patches for it, significantly increases the safety of its use. Obsolete software is one of the most common causes of viruses entering the PC. Keeping Windows 10 up to date is recommended not only by Microsoft, but also by all the largest antivirus laboratories in the world.

In general, all the latest updates in Windows 10 are installed automatically by default. This applies to both small patches and major upgrades. The issue of forced update, which is almost certainly of interest to the readers of this article, can arise in several cases:

  • Immediately after a clean reinstallation of Windows 10. Even the latest version of the OS installation image needs to be updated.
  • Following news of another major update or important security update. Many people want to be among the first to try out a new product.
  • Before temporarily disconnecting the update center (for example, before going on a business trip or to a summer residence, where downloading large packages will be impossible due to a limited Internet connection). By the way, we have an article where you can read how to temporarily turn off Windows 10 updates.

In total, there are four main ways to update Windows 10.

Method 1: update Windows 10 features with built-in OS tools

The very first and most obvious method of getting the latest version of the Tens is to use the Update Center built into the operating system. In order to open it, you must:

  1. Go to Parameters(the gear icon in the Start menu or in the Notification panel, and faster - keyboard shortcut Win + i).
  2. Then go to the " Updates and security».
  3. And press the button " Check for an update».

Unfortunately, this method does not always work quickly. The point is, from a purely technical point of view, it is impossible to simultaneously distribute service packs to all Windows 10 computers in the world. Inevitably, a kind of queue arises in which updates and upgrades (smaller and larger updates) are spread in waves. This process, depending on the volume of downloaded files, can take days or even weeks. In this regard, the question arises: is it possible to speed up the Update Center? The answer is yes!

Acceleration of receiving updates with built-in tools of Windows 10

Faster pickup activation latest updates Windows 10 with new features is possible with just one change in the Options menu. Finding it yourself is quite difficult.

  1. It is located in the already mentioned section "Update and Security".
  2. Follow the link "Additional parameters".
  3. There we select the link “ Delivery optimization».
  4. Here you can activate the item " Allow downloads from other computers"And select sources" Pc in local network and PC on the Internet».

Enabling this option in the settings may speed up the receipt of the most recent updates for Windows 10... This is due to the fact that downloading files will be made not only from Microsoft servers, but also from computers of ordinary users. (this is how torrents work)... In this case, your computer will also distribute parts of the already downloaded updates to other users on the Internet. With a metered internet connection, this transfer will be stopped. If further in this paragraph of the parameters click on one more link " Extra options", You can do it yourself limit download speed from other Windows 10 users on the internet as well as giving them their updates.

Here you can also set a monthly traffic limit for uploading downloaded update packages (from 5 to 500 GB). If you have a leisurely Internet (up to 10 Mb / s), then it would be reasonable to set the return rates to a minimum: 5% of the channel width and 5 GB.

Method 2: Windows 10 update program

This option is only suitable for Accelerate getting the big annual Windows 10 update, which usually comes out every six months and is announced in the media. This method is not suitable for installing regular small patches.
First you need to go to the downloads section of the official Microsoft website and by selecting the button " Update now», Download and run the Windows10Upgrade program.

The program will check the installed on this moment Windows 10 version to see if the update is available and, if possible, install it. If the computer does not need to update the operating system, the message "Thank you for updating to the latest version of Windows 10" and the button "Exit" will appear.

Method 3: Download Windows 10 Update

It is also relevant only for obtaining large and rare OS improvements, which the creators themselves call upgrades.
On the already mentioned downloads page Microsoft official website can be downloaded full image latest windows 10 and then, as they say, "roll" it on top of the old one. To do this, select the second button " Download the tool now"(Seen in the screenshot above). The installation image of the Media Creation Tool is downloaded to your computer. To understand if there are a new version Windows 10 for your computer, you need to compare the assembly of "tens" on the PC and in the program. For this:

  • Right-click on the downloaded file of the Media Creation Tool program, select " Properties"And go to the" In detail". Watching syuorka.
  • Right-click on the menu Start and select the item " System". We look at the build number.

In both cases, we are only interested in the 5-digit number. By comparing the version and assembly of the operating system here and there, you can understand whether it is worth downloading the update. In the picture below, you can see that there is no point in this. The computer has the same version 16299, which is also offered in the program for updating.

There are also cases when a more recent version of Windows 10 is already installed on the computer through the Update Center than is offered in the program.

If a major update exists for your computer, then we run this utility and it gives us the opportunity to choose actions to install it: either, as in the previous method with Windows 10Upgrade, by updating, or by downloading the full image to the computer and installing it manually. For the second method, when starting the program, select the item " Create installation media". Burn full image latest Windows 10 will be available both on a USB flash drive and on HDD computer (in this case, select the "ISO file" item). After downloading, in both cases, the installer is launched by clicking the application setup in the folder with downloaded files. The ISO image must first be unzipped.

Method 4: Windows 10 cumulative updates from the official website

This method is suitable for finding and installing small, so-called cumulative or cumulative updates from an official source... Like major upgrades, they can be obtained not only through the automatic Update Center built into Windows 10, but also directly from the official " Microsoft Update Catalog". To find updates for your computer, you need to enter the build number of your OS in the search bar of the portal (for example, 16299). Recall that you can view it by selecting the "System" item by clicking on the Start menu with the RIGHT mouse button. In addition to cumulative updates, the list will include driver updates for all kinds of hardware. Needless to say, they need to be installed only with a clear understanding of the need for this action.

Please note that using this method receiving and installing cumulative (cumulative) updates carries an additional risk of their incompatibility with your computer. The fact is that when problems arise with specific updates for certain brands of laptops or motherboards computers, Microsoft, as a rule, rather quickly pauses their installation through the Update Center and gradually solves the problems. By downloading such packages manually and installing them by force, you run the risk of encountering incompatibility problems. This happens quite rarely, but you need to keep this in mind. It is most convenient to use the official catalog for downloading cumulative updates with a clean reinstalling Windows 10. To be on the safe side, you can see in advance what updates have already been installed on your computer before.

Where to find installed updates in Windows 10 and how to remove them

To see a list of all Windows 10 updates installed on your computer, you need to open Settings (Win + i), go to the "Updates and Security" tab and click on the link " View log installed updates ". Here will be presented as
component updates and fixes, as well as driver updates, the installation of which in the top ten in the overwhelming majority of cases occurs automatically.

Removing specific Windows 10 updates It is done as follows: at the very top of the update log, select the "Delete updates" link, and then in the window that opens, select the unnecessary items and, by clicking on them with the RIGHT mouse button, click "Delete".

Conclusion: What is the best way to update Windows 10 to use

Finally, let's summarize. In this article, we have described all the main ways update Windows 10 features get cumulative or major updates. However, in our opinion, the preferred method is the one described first - it is Windows 10 built-in update...
