The eighth version of the Android operating system, codenamed Android O, is slowly beginning to acquire the first rumors. What will we see or would like to see in the coming 2017 in the most popular mobile OS? So far, only one thing can be said with certainty - Google will not change traditions and will call the next version one of the delicacies or confectionery.

LATEST NEWS:

UPDATED 18.07.2017:

Features that will definitely be in the final version of Android O:

  • Picture in Picture (PiP)- will allow you to use the "application" on top of the "application". A new era of multitasking
  • - not only the operating system, but also applications
  • Prioritizing background apps - the battery will now last more than 7.0
  • LDAC support- high quality Bluetooth audio codec from Sony

UPDATED 17.07.2017:

Google released the penultimate version for developers (there will be 4 in total) with a change in the API interface. Beta available for Google Pixel, Google Pixel XL, Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, or Pixel C

Android release date has shifted to September / October 2017 since Since the Google I / O conference, rumors are circulating that the full version will debut on the Google Pixel 2, which is due out in these months.

What are we waiting for?

The next letter, just like the version, will start with the letter "O" (the previous ones had names: Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean, KitKat, Lollipop, Marshmallow and Nougat). The corporation's options for good, in fact, are few. Of the obvious favorites, one can single out Oreo- a well-known brand of cookies in America - even Chokopai bypasses in popularity at home, although in Russia they are not particularly favored. Orange is another candidate for Android's eighth glory, albeit unlikely.

Android 8.0 is Oreo?

By the way, the new version may well be not the next numbered one, i.e. become, for example, Android 7.2 and so on - just remember the versions of Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean and KitKat. Moreover, the other day a new version 7.1 has been released (so far only for developers), so a continuation of the 7.x look so far looks more likely than the release of the G8.

release date

Until last year, Google always tried to announce new software exactly with the hardware. In 2016, all of a sudden, the company started talking about the Developer Preview Andoied N ahead of the I / O conference. It is strange that new phone Pixel XL only came out in October this year, while Nougat appeared on third-party phones much earlier. Perhaps this is the new Google policy regarding the fact that equipment (in particular, phones) is no longer just a "carrier" of the new OS, but becomes a more independent product. Therefore, the new version of the OS is expected in July-August 2017.

Google Pixel is far from the first to receive Andoid Nougat

Does my phone support Android 8.0?

Even Google phones don't have eternal support from the manufacturer. The same security updates are provided for three years after the release of the device. Thus, support Nexus 5x and Nexus 6P ends in September 2017, Nexus 9 and Nexus 6 already left without it in October 2016 - which means that these phones will no longer receive the Android O update. We can say with almost 100% certainty that the current flagships from Samsung, HTC, LG and Motorola will receive updates in early 2018

Motorola G4 Plus will probably wait for its Android 8.0

Android 8.0 is Andromeda?

In the Western press, there is an opinion that the new version of Android will be Google on October 4 - more precisely, it is a hybrid of Android and Chrome OS called the constellation Andromeda... Google decides to follow in Microsoft's footsteps and is preparing a single and universal eco-system for all types of devices. Does this mean the imminent demise of Android as a standalone OS? Andomeda can hardly be called the "killer" of Android or its version 8.0 and here's why:

  1. The new OS has been announced for both phones / tablets and laptops.
  2. The end result can be characterized as Google chrome from Android functions, and not vice versa.
  3. The transition to the Andromeda system will be smooth and gradual, so we should see at least another version of Android.
  4. Release date: 2017 Google is unlikely to allow itself to stop the development of its main operating system.

First of all, it must be said that no revolutionary or radical design and user interface (UI) changes should be expected in Android 8.0. If you are familiar with the regular version of Android, then you will not have to get used to it again, since in fact the design has remained the same. But under the cover of Android O you will find many innovations that have affected some functions and settings.

Android 8: new notification options

This includes the display of missed messages. Google has an almost invisible dot in the upper right corner in the corresponding app shortcut; Both Apple and Samsung, which have been using this feature for a long time, indicate the exact number of unread messages.

If you lightly click on the shortcut, the corresponding context menu in the mini window. And there you can not only read a fragment of the message - the user is provided with two more additional interactive opportunities with context specificity. This is reminiscent of Apple's 3D-Touch technology.

So, for example, right from the desktop, you can launch the mail application, open a tab, call your favorite number or set a destination for the navigator. In addition, you can now effortlessly place the necessary widgets on the screen.

However, for our taste, the message preview format seems so small that it hardly has any benefit. In part, Google has implemented context options already in Android 7.1, and in Android O these capabilities have been expanded.

Extends Google and Reminder options. If you move the notification panel slightly to the side, the clock and settings icon will appear. A tuning wheel allows the user to set general settings notifications for the respective application. Here you can also completely disable signals for individual instruments.

Additionally, Android O introduces notification channels for app groups. Signal options for these channels can be set individually to immediately cover the same type of application. This contributes to ease of operation and reduces the annoying factor of push messages.

Google's Android multi-window mode has been introduced since version 7. Android 8 expands this feature by adding a picture-in-picture mode, familiar to users on television devices (including Android-TV).

In beta, the picture-in-picture mode can only be activated with one trick for YouTube videos (open YouTube in Chrome browser, in the three-dot menu, select "Version for PC", go to full screen mode and then press Home button).

This creates a small floating window that sits on top of all other content. If you touch this window, it will slightly enlarge and control panels will appear. True, there is little to see in these tiny windows.

Android 8: updates faster, lasts longer

However, the most important changes are hidden inside: Google is striving to bring updates to the market as soon as possible, including the devices of partners. Under an architecture called Project Treble, Google is decoupling Android from low-level software such as drivers, which provides the benefits of self-updates through system changes.

This does not solve the Google update issue, but minimizes it somewhat. After all, there are often security-critical bugs in device drivers. In the future, this will be the responsibility of third-party manufacturers.

In addition, under an architecture called Project Vital, Google plans to improve security and improve energy management in Android system and declares war on the energy eaters. Background activity of programs such as location scans or wireless network, is now strictly limited by the system, and there is now a new interface for important synchronization tasks.

I am also pleased with the ability to allow the installation of applications from unknown sources only to certain tools in the system. For example, directories of third-party open source software such as F-Droid can be used without risking unwanted browser downloads and installations.

The list of innovations does not end there. In addition to new emoticons, Google is embedding the so-called System Tuner, the capabilities of which vary significantly from version to version. Optionally, the WLAN chip can be automatically activated when there is a known network nearby.

Connoisseurs of good sound will appreciate the presence of support for the AptX and AptX-HD Bluetooth codecs, which promise CD quality. In addition, Android O introduces new programming interfaces (APIs), for example, an API for autocomplete, which should, in particular, greatly facilitate the work of password managers, and an interface for SMS verification.

You will also be able to appreciate the practicality of recognizing marked texts: if you mark a phone number or address, a context menu will appear, which will immediately offer a suitable application for this content.

Android O or 8.0 will be ready in the fall

The beta version of Android O, available for the current Pixel models and the Nexus 5X and 6P smartphones, is fairly stable. Nevertheless, it is not worth using it everywhere yet. We positively appreciated the innovations, but some of them seem to be not very convenient yet and look small on smartphone screens.

The final google version releases in the third quarter (August or September). Major manufacturers mobile phones will install Android 8 from the end of 2017 on flagships that will have a support period of 18 to 24 months after the first release.

Many models of the middle segment and former flagships, as usual, "fly past" updates. After all, before Android smartphones are capable of the same flexible updates as Windows PCs, Google still has a lot of work to do. First of all, this concerns the clarification of the usual OS code names by the names of desserts. In tweets you can see "Oreo", a year earlier it was "Nutella", and version 7 was dubbed "Nougat". The bait for the jokers from Google is better do not get caught.
