Is, of course, a major update, but it is not as significant as the transition from Android 2.3.6 to Android 4.0, if you remember that moment. However, there are 10 features that are not available to users of older versions and only appear with the arrival of Android 5.1. We will tell you what the functions are, and please tell us which ones from this list you plan to use.

1. Access to quick settings from the lock screen

You can lower the curtain and turn off Wi-Fi or turn on the flashlight directly from the lock screen, even if the device is protected by a code. This is convenient, but remember that besides you, anyone else can do it with your device.

2. Management of quick settings

More control over appearance panels. You can remove shortcuts that you think are unnecessary.

3. Device protection

Set up a secure screen lock method (set a password) and protection is automatically enabled. Even after resetting the device to factory defaults, it will be password protected.

4. Audio calls with high sound quality

You can feel this only in a conversation with the interlocutor, whose device also supports HD Audio, and if this happened, you should feel the difference in sound quality.

5. Priority settings

You can set new settings for notifications, which can now wake you up always and in any situation, or wait until you see the light to the sound of your alarm.

6. Dual SIM cards at the same time

You will be able to work with two SIM cards on your own, and in Android 5.1 everything is done for your convenience. However, apart from this, you can assign different SIM cards to different users if someone other than you is using your smartphone.

7. Connect faster

Many versions of Android have quick settings to enable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Version 5.1 will allow you not only to enable protocols, but also scan available networks, and connect to one of them, all in quick access.

8. We send notifications

In Android 5.0 Lollipop, the notification system has been redesigned and, like everything new, it may need to be improved. In version 5.1, you can banish all notifications from the screen, but leave them in the Notification Center.

9. Changing the system volume while playing music

This, of course, is not useful every day, but in Android 5.1, while playing music, you can adjust the volume of notifications and system sounds, and not just the song being played.

10. Ignoring broken Wi-Fi networks

If a device with Android 5.1 catches a Wi-Fi network that does not provide a sufficient connection quality, it remembers it and does not connect to it in the future.

Based on materials from Gizmodo

After numerous miniature Android updates, the developers have announced a major update to Android 5.1 Lollipop, now officially.

Factory images are already available for download, and as you probably guessed, the journalists updated their Nexus 5 to the latest version of Android to check out the innovations after previous version OS and determine if the right steps have been taken in the right direction.

To the public, Google has only highlighted a few new features - support for multiple SIM cards, increased device security and HD voice calls on compatible phones, plus an improved quick switch panel. In addition, numerous bug fixes have been made. Most of these little things have led to the elimination of memory leak problems in the first place.

According to the first impressions of journalists, it behaves much more stable than the previous Lollipop. The Material Design philosophy has been slightly tweaked, resulting in noticeable improvements in animations.

However, foreign resources have noticed several other small changes in the latest version of Android.

1. Partial return of silent mode

Switch on quiet mode, which temporarily interrupts all sounds and vibrations, returns to Android 5.1, but in a slightly distorted version. Users have experienced a really big lack of this feature. But the developers still didn't hear the complaint. In this regard, one of the new features was the inclusion of a notification LED for incoming notifications, regardless of the set sound mode on the phone. As you probably know, in Android 5.0.x, the indicator is not allowed to blink in "quiet" mode.

2. Improving the Wi-Fi switch

In Android 5.0.x Lollipop, clicking on the text directly below the Wi-Fi switch (which displays the network name) will automatically take you to the selection menu with Wi-Fi highlighted. In Android 5.1, clicking on the network name will open the Wi-Fi selection menu right inside the notifications.

3. Improving the Bluetooth switch

As in the previous case, clicking on the text right below the Bluetooth icon will open a special menu with nearby Bluetooth devices right in the notifications. But remember that this new menu will not allow you to search for available devices. In order to do this, you still have to go to the Bluetooth menu in the settings. Thus, you no longer need to leave any application to switch between paired Bluetooth devices.

4. Improvement of the lock screen

If in locked mode on Android 5.1 you swipe down from the notification bar, then you can unlock the phone by going outside open menu... If, however, you swipe up in the notification settings, the phone will be locked again. This is a subtle change to Android 5.0.x: previously, the user was left in locked mode anyway.

5. Hide Inverting / Wi-Fi Hotspot

If you've already tried Android 5.0 Lollipop, you may have inadvertently added two toggles to quick settings - color inversion and Wi-Fi Hotspot. Unfortunately, once enabled, there is no option to remove them from quick settings. But Android 5.1 allows you to remove unnecessary elements. As soon as they appear, just press and hold down the corresponding switch, then click "Hide".

6. More convenient docking screen

The dock screen that debuted with Lollipop came in handy, but its unfinished look scared users. IN new version OS, the function operates on the same principles, but offers a more user-friendly interface.

7. Improved heads-up notifications

After you receive notifications and pop up at the top of the display, you can now swipe to hide them, but keep the notification on the top line.

8. No breaks until the next alarm

This is a convenient addition to the Prioroty mode: if you set an alarm, you will have the option to turn on the priority mode until the alarm disappears. In other words, idle mode and notifications are now in order.

9. Device protection

We wrote about this innovation above. Lost or stolen devices will now remain locked until the original user signs in google entry... The lock remains active even after a factory reset. That's good to hear. The new security feature will initially only be available on the Nexus 6 and 9, but Google plans to expand support to many more Android 5.1 devices.

And the last mentioned innovation touched upon the main function of the phone. Owners of compatible phones will be able to enjoy crystal clear voice calls if their operator cellular supports this function. The Nexus 6 on T-Mobile or its upcoming Verizon variant, for example, are among these compatible handsets.

At first glance, Android may seem like an extremely simple operating system, but in it (especially in latest versions) there are many hidden features and settings that can make your life much easier. So before you run to get root and install tons of software on your smartphone, it would be better to familiarize yourself with this functionality.

Safe mode

Android has a so-called safe mode... Working in this mode, operating system disables all user-installed applications, so it can save if you suddenly infected your smartphone with a screen lock. To activate, just press the shutdown button until the Power off button appears, and then hold your finger on it. The smartphone will reboot.

Black list

Blacklisting numbers have always been a stumbling block for Android users. The system itself does not provide such opportunities, and the applications available in the market implement blocking numbers through dirty hacks and not always correctly (most of these applications simply pretend to be a third-party dialer who picks up the phone and immediately hangs up).

However, blocking can also be obtained in stock Android, for this you just need to send unwanted subscribers to voicemail. To do this, tap on the desired contact, then click the edit icon ("pencil"), then the menu and select the item "Voice only. post office". There, by the way, you can set a separate ringtone for the subscriber.

Quick replies

The so-called quick replies are a function that allows you to quickly send SMS in response to a call. By default, four responses are available, such as "I can't speak", "I'll call you back." But this is pretty boring and mundane. If you want something more creative, the response templates can be edited: "Phone -> menu -> Settings -> Quick replies".

Little tricks

  • To change the case of letters or to make words or sentences begin with a capital letter in an already entered message, just select the message and press the Shift key until the desired result is obtained.
  • In Android 5/6, access to quick settings can be obtained by pulling out the shutter with two fingers.
  • You can quickly turn on vibration mode in Android 5/6 by pressing the volume key and then tapping on the icon on the left side of the slider that appears.
  • Android has screen magnifier... To enable it, go to Settings -> Special. features -> Gestures for magnification ". Now any part of the screen can be enlarged by tapping on it three times.
  • To disable automatic creation of icons on the desktop, run Play Store, go to settings and uncheck the "Add icons" item.

Android has a settings section completely invisible and unknown to most users with additional Wi-Fi options. To get to it, you need to go to "Settings -> Wi-Fi", then press the menu key and select "Additional functions". Here you can turn off notifications about detected networks, turn off Wi-Fi in sleep mode (I do not recommend: working in passive mode, the Wi-Fi module consumes less battery than when you turn it on / off), prohibit the use of Wi-Fi networks with a bad signal and configure Wi-Fi Direct (direct device pairing without using an access point).

Disable sync

By default, Android enables auto-sync (push notifications) with all services added to the Settings -> Accounts section. First of all, it is google account, as well as Skype and other services. You may not need most types of synchronization (for example, Google+ synchronization), so it's better to turn them off, you can do all at once by clicking on the three dots at the top and unchecking the "Auto-sync data" item. But only some types of data are possible: we poke on one of the accounts, select an account and remove (or put) the checkboxes.

Android 5.0 Lollipop is one of the biggest updates Google has released for software android. The fifth version of android has already appeared on the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9, and is gradually appearing on all other android devices.

Firmware Android Lollipop includes many features that provide superior usability. Some of these characteristics are visible to the naked eye and easily accessible, while others are unfamiliar to many. Therefore, we will give some tips on Android Lollipop, show a few tricks, reveal hidden features that you need to know about, so you will be ready to update your device to Android Lollipop.

Flappy Bird clone

Android Lollipop has a new toy similar to the infamous Flappy Bird. However, the bird has been replaced by a green Android robot. To play this game, go to [Settings] - [About device] and repeatedly click on the line [ Android version] until the lollipop appears. Long press on the lollipop icon and the game will start. Just tap the screen to start playing. Enjoy!

Smart lock(Smart Lock)

Android Lollipop has a new lock called Smart Lock. It is designed to protect your device easier than ever. This feature will allow you to avoid the lock screen when you are in a trusted environment.

This means that if you are connected to a known device via Bluetooth or connected via NFC to a device such as a smartwatch or car stereo, you do not need to worry about entering a PIN or password. To enable this function, go to [Settings] - [Security] - [Smart Lock] and set up the Bluetooth devices you trust.

App lock

In order to improve security, Google has implemented new function called In-App Lock, which allows you to pin a specific app to your android device.

When enabled, no other settings or applications can be opened except for the pinned application. This can be useful if you are in a situation where your phone is with your friends or a stranger.

To enable App Lock, go to [Settings] - [Security] and enable [App Lock]. Then open the app you want to pin, click Browse (formerly Multitasking), scroll up, click the pin icon in the lower right corner of the open app.

To release the lock, long press the Back and Browse buttons at the same time.

Priority of notifications

In terms of alerts and notifications, Android 5.0 Lollipop has a new priority mode that allows you to control when notifications are received. It is somewhat reminiscent of the Do Not Disturb mode, which is implemented in iOS 8, which allows you to set the phone to silent mode in certain time every day so as not to bother you.

You can also select contacts that will not be blocked. To use priority mode, go to [Settings] - [Sounds & Notifications] - [Do Not Disturb].

Battery saving

Battery saving is one of the best new features in Android Lollipop. When it is on, vibration is turned off, background data transmission is stopped, and the brightness is reduced. You can turn on this function manually or trust it to turn on automatically, for example, when your battery reaches 15% or 5%. You will know that it was triggered by the red-orange color of the notification bar. To set the battery saving mode go to [Settings] - [Battery] and press the menu button.

Many users

Multiple users can now be installed on android. There are three types of accounts that you can set up with Lollipop. The first account is a user account that has full access to all settings and applications. The second account is a guest account that doesn't allow you to write or save anything, so you don't have to worry about someone messing up your configuration settings or anything else. And finally, the third account, in which the owner of the device can set, for example, how this device will be used, disable certain applications. You can quickly add a new account by clicking on the profile icon in the upper right corner of the lock screen or by going to the main settings menu. If you want to add restrictions and manage each account, go to the main settings menu and select a user.

Flashlight

We finally have a built-in flashlight! With this feature, now you don't have to download third party application flashlight. The flashlight can be found in the notification bar. Just pull down the curtain of the notification bar with two fingers, and then tap on the flashlight. Please note that this app will only work if your camera has a flash.

Search by settings

Android Lollipop includes a new Settings Search feature that allows you to search for specific settings. When you go to the Settings app, you will see a magnifying glass icon in the upper right corner. It appears on most pages inside the Settings app.

In order to search, click on the magnifying glass icon in the upper right corner in the settings menu and start typing what you are looking for. As you type, a list of relevant results will appear.

Tap &Go

Android Lollipop also simplifies the task of transferring content from one device to another by enabling Tap & Go mode. Now with this function you can quickly transfer from your old phone all the data saved in your Google account, including applications and their data.

Tap & Go uses NFC to sync the two devices and Bluetooth to transfer all the details that need to be installed on a new phone.

Conclusion

Finally, we would like to tell you about another feature that Google has implemented in Lollipop. We know that when the phone screen goes blank, in order to turn it on, you need to press the power key, now instead of this, it is enough to double-tap the screen in order to wake up the device.

  • The system now supports work with two or more SIM-cards (previously, third-party manufacturers had to modify the software for this).
  • Device Protection helps you block stolen and lost devices until you sign in to your Google account, even if an attacker resets the settings to factory defaults. The function will be available on all smartphones and tablets, shipped with Android 5.1, as well as Nexus 6 and Nexus 9.

  • Improved quality of voice calls with HD Voice. Thanks to it, the quality of the transmitted speech increases and individual sounds are better recognized, for example, voiced and voiceless consonants. However, the devices of both interlocutors must work on Android 5.1 Lollipop, and the telecom operator must support HD Voice technology.

Interface changes

In the interface changes, the following points should be noted:

  • Hide notifications by swiping up;
  • Faster unlocking of the device when the top tray is open;
  • Quick access to the list of available Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth devices from the settings panel;

  • Ability to remove previously added quick settings;

  • Adding animation to the auto-rotate icon;
  • Adding animation to the icons of various submenus in the Clock application;
  • When you enable the "Lock in the application" function, a hint is now displayed every time how to disable it;

  • The silent mode did not appear. By the way, there were earlier reports that the option "Do not disturb until the next alarm goes off" will appear in the notification settings, but as there were two options "Indefinitely" or "A certain period of time", they remained;

  • The contact editing menu has been redesigned in the Material Design style.

  • Fixed a bug in the flashlight. The included flash turned off spontaneously after a while, and the user saw an error message.
  • During music playback, it became possible to control the volume of system sounds (calls and notifications). To do this, press the volume key once and in the menu that appears on the right, click on the call icon.

Performance

On a personal level, Android 5.1 has become much faster. Switching between browser tabs, scaling "heavy" sites, switching between applications, scrolling news, navigating through the settings - everything happens smoothly, but at the same time quickly, without slowdowns. Perhaps this is only a subjective opinion, and the system is not yet clogged with third-party garbage, but at the time of the check, about 100 applications were installed on the smartphone. With the same number of programs, even a clean Android system 5.0.1 worked relatively slowly, slight "brakes" were noticeable.

Running applications are not being closed randomly yet, but it takes more time to check. Previously RAM my Nexus 5 was "clogged" in a few days, after which opening any application led to unexpected closure of all others. At least now I noticed that Instagram has stopped “crashing” just like that. On the other hand, when trying to record video via Rec. the following message appeared several times: site. The over-the-air update will start shortly. As for the rest of the devices, new firmware will appear gradually, and there is no doubt that everyone will receive the update.

The Android 5.1 Lollipop update marks Google's next step towards the ultimate OS. A lot of work has been done on bugs, performance has been improved, new small, but at the same time important functions have been added to make it easier for the user to communicate with the device. Of the minuses, it is worth noting the absence silent mode and not fully optimized interface work. To check the rest of the aspects Android work 5.1, more time is needed.
